Just in case you weren’t aware, The Comedy Bureau has been solely run by me, Jake Kroeger, for nearly 7 years. I’ve loved serving both LA and comedy that whole time. Though I’ve gotten side gigs in this past, the Bureau takes up most of my time (i.e. it turns out that it’s a full time job running a whole agency by yourself) even though that has proven to be an ill advised idea financially time and time again (i.e. I make almost no money doing it and continue to live with my folks). Through monthly $ pledges on Patreon, I could have this be a sustainable public service that wouldn’t ever have to end. The more I get, the better The Comedy Bureau can be as well (app, NYC branch, etc. etc.). So, with all of that said, please support The Comedy Bureau on Patreon.

HBO’s Silicon Valley Made a Whole Site and Registration Page for “Hoolicon 2017″

In satirizing the real Silicon Valley as much as they can, HBO’s Silicon Valley (in the same spirit as the faux sites for the characters of Veep) has extended their fictional world further into the real world with a Hoolicon event, complete with a site and registration page allowing for you to sign up.

Of course, Hoolicon is a big event along the lines of something like WWDC put on by Pied Piper’s nemesis, Hooli. If you like up the address, you’ll find that it’s on the campus of Cal State LA, which conveniently looks nothing like the screen grab of the landing page above. Also, we love Hooli CEO Gavin Belson’s quote in the about us page, “I don’t want to live in a world where someone else makes the world a better place better than we do.“

The cost of actually “registering” is several hundred dollars. We don’t have the sort of wallet to see how fun that part of the Hoolicon rabbit hole is, but we appreciate the attention to detail.

See all of this for yourself at the Hoolicon page here.

Lots of people start bands. The one that Jeff Simmermon started involved chickens and typewriters. That may sound crazy, but it’s just one of the many fantastic, hilarious, well-crafted, true stories encapsulated on his new album And I Am Not Lying (plus there’s proof to back it up).

Get a taste of what we’re talking about with this clip.

Then, get your own copy of And I Am Not Lying to hear Simmermon tell the rest of his tales that almost sound like tall tales, but is just another point for truth being stranger than fiction.

For years now, Billy Eichner has not only run up to strangers to aggressively ask them about pop culture trivia, but he has also given out some of the most bizarre prizes in the history of game shows including a poster for LEGO Manchester by the Sea and marionettes of the cast of Transparent.

The Billy on the Street prop department must have a lot of fun making these fever dreams that Eichner and co. come up with.

See some of the best ones in this montage.

Late Night with Seth Meyers represents a pretty traditional version of a late night talk show whereas Desus & Mero on Viceland throw out nearly every late night talk show convention that you could think of right out the window.

This week, the old and the new crossed path as Desus Nice and The Kid Mero came on Late Night as guests and talked shop about how much nicer Meyers’ set is, etc.

Watch the whole interview here.

Get a Look at Mike Myers as “British TV Personality” Tommy Maitland, the Host of Revived ‘Gong Show’

June 9, 2017
Uncategorized

It’s been quite some time since we’ve seen Mike Myers play a character in a sort of lead role outside like he did for the Austin Powers franchise.

Yet, with a sequel in the works and him donning a virtually unrecognizable get up to be the new host of the brand spankin’ new Gong Show, Tommy Maitland.

The Gong Show is already a bit chaotic as is, but we’d hope that with Myers playing the character of a renowned UK comedian and Will Arnett attached as EP, that some rather more insane stuff will happen to set it apart from America’s Got Talent and other reality competition shows.

In any case, you can get a taste of what Myers is like as Maitland in this teaser, then catch the series revival premiere on Thursday, June 22nd at 10PM on ABC.

Alamo Drafthouse Is Officially and Finally Coming to DTLA in 2018

Alamo Drafthouse Is Officially and Finally Coming to DTLA in 2018

Of the indie/arthouse theater chains around, the Alamo Drafthouse has seen success where many others have struggled. Moving to LA was part of a nationwide expansion enacted over the last few years due to their popularity in their original locations.

Though a ballpark timeframe for when Los Angeles would get its very own Alamo Drafthouse has been foggy for quite some time now, 2018 is the target for when Alamo Drafthouse will join the shopping/dining/working complex known as The Bloc in DTLA’s Financial District.

As Sundance Sunset Cinemas was recently given up to AMC, this announcement couldn’t come any sooner as you’ll now have an indie theater on the Eastside of town to watch those darling indie comedies and dramedies rather than hustling over to any of the ArcLights or The Landmark in West LA.

Also, Alamo Drafthouse does happen to have some of the best introductory videos that warn to not talk or text that get updated quite often as opposed to by the decade like most other theaters.

After over 15 years, the beloved series Dr. Katz has gotten revived thanks to Audible.

Jonathan Katz and Laura Silverman reprise their roles and are joined by a cavalcade of your favorite comedy folks including Dana Gould, Eddie Pepitone, Weird Al Yankovic, Maria Bamford, Emo Philips, Ron Funches, and much more in a possibly more addicting format as an audio series, Dr. Katz: The Audio Files.

Through Audible, there are 15 episodes of Dr. Katz: The Audio Files for you to listen to every week when they release new episodes. In fact, three episodes are up right now for free with guests Andy Kindler, Sarah Silverman, and Ray Romano.

If you have an Audible subscription or Amazon Prime, you can go ahead and listen to the whole series, as it comes out, for free. You can also subscribe to Audible Channels for premium original audio series as well as Dr. Katz for $4.95 a month.

If it’s any indication of what you might be in for, we went to the live taping of this revived Dr. Katz this past week with guests Paul F. Tompkins, Jon Hamm, Kristen Schaal, and Al Madrigal and it was every bit as charming as we remember the series being all those years ago.

This latest appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon is just another nice milestone in just this one particular facet of his monumental comedy career.

“Landline” Trailer Promises a Delightful, Very 90s, Dysfunctional Family Comedy

Director Gillian Robespierre and Jenny Slate proved to be a winning combo on Obvious Child three years ago.

The two thankfully teamed up again along with writing from Elisabeth Holm with a fantastic cast of Edie Falco, John Turturro, Abby Quinn, and Jay Duplass for Landline.

The trailer shows this movie is as much of a 90s period piece on top of following the lives of what looks to be a very well-crafted, fully realized dysfunctional family.

See for yourself in the trailer.

Landline will have a limited theatrical release on July 21st, then expand to theaters everywhere on August 4th.

Nick Kroll and John Mulaney have taken their characters, Gil Faizon and George St. Geegland, to a proverbial mountaintop. From sketches to the hallowed streets of NYC’s Broadway, Faizon and St. Geegland have slyly goofed their way to the brightest spotlight.

Now, for all of us who can’t get tickets to anything on Broadway, we’ll get to see just how much they went overboard with the tuna in their Netflix special, “Oh, Hello Broadway”.
