How the #FuckFuckJerry Movement Was Born as Summarized by Its Creator Megh Wright

So much has happened so fast that with #FuckFuckJerry that we had a bit of trouble with keeping up with the developments of this story. Thankfully, Megh Wright over at Vulture has given an exhaustive account in the article linked above of what has happened with the movement that she started and why Jerry Media should be taken down several more notches than they already have.

Currently, they’ve been knocked down from 14.3 million followers on Instagram to 14 million. While you’re at it, you can go ahead and unfollow the rest of the Jerry Media gang: @beigecardigan and @krispyshorts.

Really, all hail Megh Wright, a righteous defender of the art form of comedy, which is indeed an art form and not an endless mine of potential ad copy to be exploited.

The Simpsons Secure Their 31st and 32nd Seasons at Fox

This puts The Simpsons at 713 episodes, furthering their run as the longest running scripted TV show in all of entertainment history. Perhaps, it might even crack beating some of the record holders for unscripted TV shows (those range in thousands FYI).

With their place in history/pop culture/zeitgeist well secured, we’ll be curious to see if and what they’ll do about Apu with these two new seasons regarding Hari Kondabolu’s Problem With Apu, if anything at all.

‘Modern Family’ Will Get an 11th and Final Season at ABC

Without question, Modern Family is one of those era defining sitcoms and, as such, its exit after this 11th season might signal the end of an era. What’s interesting is that if you think about the pilot of Modern Family all those years ago, it seems to be kind of like The Office set within a multi-generational family. In a few ways, it got to be a multi-cam and single camera comedy at the same time, a very rare feat to pull off.

Of course, it became its own beloved show and garnered critical and commercial success over several seasons, but we’d be curious to see what sort of lasting impression it will leave on the next generation of sitcoms that will have a similar run.

Maybe that next long-running show will end up being The Good Place and it’ll be a new era of extremely high concept comedy with heart. Unfortunately, only time will tell, but you will at least get one more season of Modern Family in the meantime.

NBC Is Going Forward with a Series Greenlight for Their Cross-Disciplinary Comedy Competition ‘Bring The Funny’

NBC Is Going Forward with a Series Greenlight for Their Cross-Disciplinary Comedy Competition ‘Bring The Funny’

Over 10 episodes, the supposed best in comedy across stand-up, sketch, improv, variety, etc. will be found in this new televised comedy competition, Bring The Funny. Effectively, it’ll take the place of Last Comic Standing at NBC.

Additionally, the judges will be Kenan Thompson, Jeff Foxworthy, and Chrissy Teigen and Amanda Seales will be covering hosting duties and a $250K “prize package” (we’re guessing that means you don’t get $250K in cash) will go the winner.

The concept, as we’ve said before, has us intrigued as we always appreciate any form of cross-pollination in comedy getting a greater platform and Seales as host is a solid move. However, we’re not thrilled with some of NBC’s choices for the judges panel or the cheesy name of the show or that they’re teaming up with Just For Laughs (essentially making this another JFL New Faces of Comedy?). If it gets someone truly original and undiscovered gets to rise to the top and receive the exposure they deserve, we guess it’ll be worth it then. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Hopefully, they’ll have open auditions where anyone will legitimately have a chance. We’ll keep you in the loop if we hear of those happening.

Eric Andre and Lil’ Rel Prank Movie ‘Bad Trip’ Set for Oct. 25th Release

Eric Andre along with Lil’ Rel and Eric Andre Show director Kitao Sakurai have made a feature length prank movie that will come out right before Halloween.

Effectively, it’ll be The Eric Andre Show: The Movie (with Lil’ Rel instead of Hannibal Buress), right?

We’ll be curious to see a teaser of just exactly what they got away with.

Jamie Lee Developing Subversive Rom Com ‘The Girlfriend’ Over at Freeform

The romantic comedy genre is beginning to get turned inside out these days and we’re on board for it. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has gained acclaim from the get-go by re-examining gender roles and stereotypes to catchy songs from every genre and there’s a feminist answer to Kevin Can Wait called Kevin Can F*** Himself in the works at AMC.

To add to that, the whipsmart Jamie Lee is now writing her own unique, dark rom com that follows the girlfriend of a husband who is the prime suspect in his wife’s disappearance (kind of like Emily Ratajkowski in Gone Girl, right?). Seeing this sort of woman’s story beyond her being a usually one-dimensional character along with Lee’s impeccable comedic writing will undoubtedly be fascinating.

So, we hope this gets a greenlight at Freeform.

HBO Orders A Black Lady Sketch Show from Robin Thede with Issa Rae Attached as EP

HBO Orders A Black Lady Sketch Show from Robin Thede with Issa Rae Attached as EP

With anthology series being all the rage, late night hosts more often betting on games for their segments over anything else, and the shuddering/shrinking of many comedy content farms, sketch comedy is currently going through a bit of, shall we say, dry spell.

Perhaps, Robin Thede (you should know her from The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore and her own show on B.E.T. The Rundown) and Issa Rae will be turning the tides.

Of course, Saturday Night Live is still trudging along because, well, tradition? HBO also has Tracey Ullman’s Show and IFC has Baroness Von Sketch Show, but outside of the occasional indulgence of late night writers on Conan, Seth Meyers, and Corden and pre-taped segments on Full Frontal and Last Week Tonight, sketch comedy needs a bit of resuscitation.

Thede’s A Black Lady Sketch Show will star her, written by her, and feature mostly black female performers and writers with special guests. With an HBO touch, perhaps it’ll be a sketch comedy show that fill that void. There are no dates currently set, but we hope this will make its premiere sometime in 2019.

We believe that Jena Friedman is creating masterworks of satirical comedy for our times with these Soft Focus specials and you’re really doing yourself a disservice if you’re not watching them.

Just off the idea of having a VR game that gives a woman’s perspective to men and interviewing John McAfee because the former software security head is running for POTUS again should be enough to peak your interest

Anyways, you can (and should) watch the latest Soft Focus with Jena Friedman for free at your convenience right here.

Viceland Is Going All In with a Nightly, Two-Hour, Live Variety Show “Vice Live” Hosted by Marie Faustin, Sandy Honig, Zack Fox, and Fat Tony

Viceland Is Going All In with a Nightly, Two-Hour, Live Variety Show “Vice Live” Hosted by Marie Faustin, Sandy Honig, Zack Fox, and Fat Tony

We don’t say this a lot here, but whoa.

Viceland is upping the ante a ton from pretty much every other late night show by having it be truly a unique variety show with the Vice touch, having four hosts (three of which are multi-hyphenate comedians and one that’s a hip hop artist), and going completely live (as opposed to live-to-tape, which all talk shows do these days).

This is so incredibly ambitious. In fact, SNL, a live variety comedy show known for how incredibly hard it is to produce, only goes weekly and doesn’t put up two hours of show. What this will end up being or looking like is anybody’s guess (save for the talent’s and Vice execs’), but this might be the kind of shake-up to the incredibly rigid late night talk show format (that was perfected by Johnny Carson decades ago) that we’ve been desperately looking for.

We will say that Vice’s last attempt at this, Desus & Mero, was a great shake-up as well and we can’t wait to see what they’ll end up doing at Showtime.

In any case, we’ve enjoyed much of the comedy of Marie Faustin, Sandy Honig, and Zack Fox when we’ve got to see them and we’re very, very intrigued to see what that trio along with hip-hop artist Fat Tony will be like on a nightly show.

Fox Is Now Developing a Cross-Disciplinary Comedy Reality Competition ‘Funny People’

Fox Is Now Developing a Cross-Disciplinary Comedy Reality Competition ‘Funny People’

Rather than have the stand-ups, sketch/character performers, and improvisers stay in their own lanes with the likes of Last Comic Standing, First Impressions with Dana Carvey, and Whose Line Is It Anyway, Funny People, this latest televised comedy competition, will have all the performers have to exhibit their talent and prowess in each discipline.

It’s essentially a comedy decathlon. At this stage, it’s hard to say what this show will be, if it even gets greenlit (if it does, we hope they change the name to something less generic sounding), but we do know there are plenty of comedians these days that would thrive in any comedy situation that would be thrown at them.

Seeing them pull that off might just be really worth watching so long as they pick the right people.

Sofia Coppola and Bill Murray Meet Up Once Again for ‘On The Rocks’ Co-Starring Rashida Jones, Which Will Also Be the First Apple x A24 Film

Not only is this the first non-Christmas-special reunion of the winning Sofia Coppola and Bill Murray combo, but On The Rocks will very likely be the first prestige picture coming from the company that makes iPhones.

Everything here is lined up for this to be a sure bet with Coppola, Murray, Rashida Jones, and a premise that seems like a spiritual sequel to Lost In Translation (maybe we’ll finally figure out what Murray said to Scarlett Johansson?) that also might tap into that legendary mythos of Bill Murray himself:

The movie follows a young mother who reconnects with her larger than life playboy father on an adventure through New York.  Rashida Jones will star with Murray. Production starts this spring in New York.

We’ll keep a close eye out for trailer to see how sure of a bet Apple and prestige film factory A24 are taking.

Emily Heller Has a Secret Society Comedy in Development at NBC

Not only is the brilliant Emily Heller developing a project at a major network and said project focuses in on “…Beth, a struggling reporter who is tired of feeling invisible in her small town and recruits other women to help take over a dying branch of an all-male secret society, but one of Hollywood’s great comedy power players Kay Cannon (Blockers, Pitch Perfect) is attached to EP along with Laverne McKinnon.

Keep your fingers crossed (or whatever superstition you subscribe to) that this gets a green light so we can see what they cook up.

The Onion Unionizes with WGA East

Well, here is some unequivocal, very non-ironic good news.

Legendary satirical publication The Onion has signed an official contract with the Writers Guild of America East that covers their 69 (we’re guessing that’s not on purpose) employees.

Per Deadline:

The two-year contract includes annual pay increases, minimum pay grades, diversity and anti-harassment language, just cause, union security, editorial independence and intellectual property rights. It also puts an end to “permalancers” – long-term freelancers – through a provision that requires the company to offer them full-time jobs if they contract, fellow or apprentice for the company for 12 consecutive months or 18 cumulative months over a two-year period.

Note that any new positions that open up at The Onion will be even more coveted than before.

Chelsea Peretti to Host 2019 Writers Guild Awards

While The Oscars are still scrambling to find a host, The Writers Guild of America have landed Chelsea Peretti to host their Writers Guild Awards on Feb. 17th.

As you may well know, the Writers Guild Awards are never televised (though clips of the monologues and speeches sometimes find their way online). With that being the case, it’s usually a much more fun affair and a bit more roast-y as well, which will likely suit Chelsea quite nicely.

This will also be the first awards hosting gig for Peretti and pretty much the first big live gig since her recent return to stand-up, which makes us even more intrigued about what she’ll do two months from now.

‘End of the F—ing World’ Duo Chuck Forsman and Jonathan Entwhistle Will Be Doing Another Dark Coming of Age Comedy Adapted from a Graphic Novel

The TV adaptation of Chuck Forsman’s End of the F**king World by Jonathan Entwhistle delighted Netflix viewers and critics alike at the top of 2017 (not to mention that the title and tone probably resonated with lots of people right after 2016).

So, Entwhistle will get to adapt another one of Forsman’s graphic novels I Am Not Okay With This that seems to be somewhat in the same ballpark: dark coming-of-age comedy, though, this time it’s focused on a girl getting mysterious super powers (possibly reminiscent of UK series The Misfits?).

So, if you’re really digging Entwhistle and Forsman together, you’ll be happy to know that you’re going to get a second season of End of the F**king World and a whole new show (as Netflix ordered 8 episodes) of I Am Not Okay With This.

Carol Burnett To Receive First Honorary Golden Globe TV Special Achievement Award Which Will Also Be Named After Her

The very first Carol Burnett Award recognizing special achievement in television will be given to Burnett at the ceremony next year and will bear her name every year thereafter. Hopefully, it’ll encourage those not familiar to not only take a look at the career of the recipients, but take a look back at Carol’s legendary career.

We’re always on board for reminders of how great Carol Burnett was, is, and will probably always be.

Finally, this might be one nod to comedy that The Golden Globes didn’t entirely screw up.

Between Two Ferns With Zach Galifianakis Movie in the Works at Netflix

While the whole premise of Between Two Ferns is to invert the talk show format so far on its head that it’s essentially an anti-talk-show talk show. That idea along with Zach Galifianakis’ mastery of deadpan made for one of Funny or Die’s most popular ventures over the years.

There is no regular schedule for when one of these will be made and released, which has resulted in a sort of heightening how much their subverting a talk show (even to the point where they’ll have guests that subvert the whole artifice of Between Two Ferns itself).

So, with the prospect of an entire movie via Netflix already under way, we can only imagine that Zach and Scott Aukerman are going to get incredibly meta with this.

Celebrity Deathmatch Reboot Being Developed at MTV Studios with Ice Cube Set To Star

The over-the-top claymation battles between pop culture figures from every arena (entertainment, sports, politics, etc.), for us, was one of MTV’s best forays into comedy ever. It was sad to see it go after its run in the early 2000s.

That being said, it’ll be interesting to see how this series premised on fights-to-the-death-by-celebrities will figure into the TV landscape of 2019 (or whenever this might be picked up to series). MTV Studios is aiming for streaming services and premium networks as a move, we’d suppose, to not have to necessarily cater to censors.

As reboots and revivals are still the order of the day at studios and networks, we guess we can do a whole lot worst than a revival of Celebrity Deathmatch (though it has yet to be officially picked up anywhere). MTV Studios attaching Ice Cube is an interesting choice as well since this might be the first non-family-friendly thing he’s done in a very long time.
