Comedy Central Orders Anthony Jeselnik Interview Series ‘Good Talk with Anthony Jeselnik’ to Series

For six episodes that include chats with the likes of Kumail Nanjiani, Kristen Schaal, Nick Kroll, and Tig Notaro, Anthony Jeselnik will be an interviewer, perhaps on a more peer-to-peer level.

In fact, this might be your best chance to see Jeselnik drop the “heel comedian” persona a bit/break kayfabe, but we can’t say for sure right now. The mystery of how that might go is intriguing enough for us to want see Anthony has up his sleeve this time.

Please Enjoy’s Nick Ciarelli and Bradford Evans Take on Every Cameo Video Ever

In this age of apps, there is, of course, an app that allows you to pay for “celebrity” (heavy emphasis on the quotation marks there) shout outs and endorsements via a video shot on a phone.

It’s called Cameo and, as you can imagine, the videos have gotten a bit weird, and it is definitely ripe for the sort of send-up that the uber-clever Nick Ciarelli and Brad Evans just did.

Please enjoy it here.

The Razzie Awards Are, for the First Time Ever, Getting Made Into a TV Special Thanks to Comedy Dynamics

The Razzie Awards, otherwise known by their more formal(?) name The Golden Raspberry Awards, are the unapologetic trolls of awards season that “honor” the worst that Hollywood spat out into theaters over the last year.

Admittedly, it is fun to see who gets nominated and there is usually way less debate (though we’re not sure whether that’s because no one’s jockeying for a Razzie or if they are just that spot on with their picks).

An entire TV special would essentially (probably) be a roast and, perhaps, a pretty entertaining one depending on who the host is (Nikki Glaser, Matt Rogers/Bowen Yang, Joel Hodgson?).

Maybe this is the spiritual consolation for the White House Correspondents Dinner no longer being hosted by a comedian? We’ll just have to see what Comedy Dynamics has up their sleeve and how far they’re willing to go.

Lisa Kudrow To Voice Literal ‘Therapy Dog’ in Animated Presentation for Fox

OK, so Lisa Kudrow will be starring at the titular Therapy Dog, a dog that actually provides traditional therapy for other animals, in this animated project that comes from a team that includes Clea DuVall (whose film The Intervention doesn’t get enough love in our opinion), Jennifer Crittenden, and Gabrielle Allan along with writer/producer/actress dramedy powerhouse Sharon Horgan attached.

Also, the dog that Kudrows plays will also be in an questionable marriage and curious about a charming coyote.

So far, this checks plenty of boxes for us. Even the idea of a dog that is a therapist is pretty damn adorable. Hopefully, this makes it through development hell just to see what this might look/sound/feel like (because it could be great).

So, the LA Central Library Has a Studio Called the Octavia Lab That Allows You to Make Whatever Your Imagination Can Come Up With

You know, you might have to start going downtown to the LA Central Library more often?

This newly minted Octavia Lab, free to use with reservation, contains almost every creative tool you can imagine from Adobe Creative Cloud and ProTools to a 3D Printer and a CNC Machine to a sewing machine and a green screen to a lab where you can digitize any old form of media.

Whether you’re a sketch group, podcaster, installation artist with a sense of humor, this might be the thing for you if you don’t have access to any of this equipment, much less all of this equipment in one place.

For our readers that are big dreamers that have really ambitious visions, this might be a good place to start to actualize said vision. Do note that hours are limited and you must make a reservation to use the Octavia Lab (named after renowned sci fi author Octavia Butler).

Also, there will be a mobile version of this that will be making the rounds at other library branches in LA.

Between Two Ferns Movie to Have Zach Galifianakis Go on a Road Trip for Redemption and Adds Ryan Gaul, Lauren Lapkus, Jiavani Linayao to Cast

Between Two Ferns Movie to Have Zach Galifianakis Go on a Road Trip for Redemption and Adds Ryan Gaul, Lauren Lapkus, Jiavani Linayao to Cast

You might have been able to guess that a feature length adaptation of Between Two Ferns would probably have to pull back the curtain (even though the series is premised on that already) a little more.

Turns out that this Netflix movie version will have Zach Galifianakis still doing interviews of high profile celebrities, though doing them on the road as a way to show Will Ferrell that he is actual a good interviewer and not the sort of “best/worst” sort of interviewer that has made Between Two Ferns one of the most beloved, long running web series on the Internet. Also, Gaul, Lapkus, and Linayao being smarty added as the crew is another intriguing wrinkle that really has us pondering just how meta this film will get.

We’re curious to see if this premise means that Zach, for a bit, does legitimately try to interview his guests well, but, because of his reputation in the Between Two Ferns universe, it all still goes awry. We’ll find out not too long from now on the film’s release date on Netflix, Sept. 20th.

Revival of Daria at MTV Shifts Into Daria Spin-Off “Jodie” Starring and EP’d by Tracee Ellis Ross

Revival of Daria at MTV Shifts Into Daria Spin-Off “Jodie” Starring and EP’d by Tracee Ellis Ross

While initially there was supposed to be a Daria reboot, MTV has read-the-room and have opted to do a series based on the black character on Daria, Jodie Landon. While some diehard Daria faithful might be upset, it’s an intriguing change, especially with Tracee Ellis Ross calling the shots.

There are so many different elements in play here that we’re truly curious as to what Jodie might sound, look, feel like (even if it’s wildly different from Daria) and how successful this move is in, presumably, attempting to be a Gen-Z take on Daria.

One thing we do know is that if Jodie has any bit of success, you can count on this being a popular Halloween costume for years and years to come.

Aisling Bea’s ‘This Way Up’ To Be Streamed on Hulu

OK America, we hope this, this being another promising UK/US sitcom in This Way Up, will be the thing that gets you on board with UK comedian/actress Aisling Bea.

For awhile now, Aisling has dipped her toe stand-up wise here in the States and has been such a legitimate breath of fresh air with her peppy, upbeat energy and persona. Even when delving into potentially divisive material, Bea still keeps it undeniably fun.

So, hearing that her own TV series at Channel 4 in the UK and Hulu where she plays an ESL teacher trying to keep it together co-starring with Sharon Horgan and Aasif Mandvi has us really amped that U.S. audiences will hopefully get to see what we’ve been seeing for years.

Eric Andre Is Going on a Gigantic Worldwide “Legalize Everything” Tour

From the end of August through December, Eric Andre will be galavanting from the UK to Germany to Netherlands to Australia to New Zealand to all over North America bringing his brand of controlled(?) chaos for one gargantuan stand-up comedy tour.

So far, we count 30 different stops on this Legalize Everything tour and we wouldn’t be surprised if Eric adds dates along the way.

As to what’s in store for those in attendance, we can only guess how crazy it might get, especially since it’s called the Legalize Everything Tour (though we’re sure you’ll get stand-up from Eric and special guests).

Take a look at the whole schedule here.

Bo Burnham Will Write Songs for Jonathan Krisel’s Sesame Street Movie at Warner Bros.

Bo Burnham Will Write Songs for Jonathan Krisel’s Sesame Street Movie at Warner Bros.

Though Bo Burnham is on a trajectory of being an auteur from directing comedy specials and Eighth Grade, going away from his past of doing meticulously crafted songs, it would seem that the allure of the latest Sesame Street feature film adaption proved too strong.

It’s definitely an intriguing wrinkle to this Sesame Street movie, especially when you have Jonathan Krisel, whose work you know from Portlandia and Baskets, attached as director.

So, possibly, we could be getting a very cinematic, very meta Sesame Street movie coming soon to theaters?

Forever Dog’s Got an Impressive Podcast Slate Now with 11 Bright and Shiny, New Podcasts

Already, you’ve heard us heap praises on James Adomian’s The Underculture, which is only one of the new 11 podcasts at Forever Dog as part of a newly minted partnership with the revamped National Lampoon.

Just announced today are podcasts from the marvelous likes of Sabrina Jalees (The Goodie Goodie), Anna Drezen (Scary Stories to Tell on the Pod), rapper Big Dipper (Sloppy Seconds), drag star Miss Peppermint (It’s a Mess), and more that will have a comedic take on pop culture, sexuality, dark pasts of celebrities, happiness, and even scary stories.

As far as we can see here, this line-up (which really expands their previously lacking West Coast reach) now pushes Forever Dog further up the podcast network ladder next to Earwolf, Headgum, Starburns Audio, and All Things Comedy.

Taylor Tomlinson to Co-Host Fox’s Aftershow Parody “What Just Happened??!” with Fred Savage and Best Coast as a House Band

To take the aftershow craze down a few notches, Fox is ordering a series that is a parody of said aftershows (i.e. Talking Dead, Thronecast) by doing an aftershow of a fictional sci-fi show that’ll be hosted by Fred Savage and comedian Taylor Tomlinson.

They’ll even get a house band in the form of chill rock band Best Coast, which is a surprising upgrade from a real aftershow.

We like the boldness of this project and are so curious to see how it’ll fare as well as how Savage and Tomlinson will play off of each other. No matter how it goes, round of applause to Fox for taking a chance on something so meta.

ABC Orders Nate Bargatze Sitcom from Nate and Jerrod Carmichael to Series

The life and comedy of Nate Bargatze seems to be one that might bridge a lot of divisions in the here and now. Just watch any of his stand-up and you’ll know that his carefully observed, homespun stories and observations delivered in the most down-to-earth way that we’ve ever seen and you’ll see what we mean.

So, a multi-cam sitcom centered on Bargatze is a smart move by ABC, though we’ll see if it makes out of the first season, which is becoming an increasing rarity for network comedies these days. Also, we’re curious with Jerrod Carmichael’s touch having The Carmichael Show under his belt and experiencing some EP success with the critically praised Ramy on Hulu.

Above all, we’ll be curious to see if America is game for another multi-cam sitcom based on the life of a comedian.

Peep Show Getting Another Shot at American Adaptation with Gender Reversal at FX with Karey Dornetto

Of the pre-existing shows and movies that are getting gender swapped as a modern “woke” update, Peep Show from the female perspective is actually quite the fascinating prospect.

So much of the long running UK comedy is driven from a literal male gaze and accompanying perspective and seeing it from the other side opens up a whole other world of possibilities should FX order it to series. Knowing that a Portlandia writer, Karey Dornetto, is attached is also very alluring.

Definitely, FX would be the network to take a chance on such a project, but we’ll just have to wait and see if they do indeed pick it up.

‘Archer: 1999’ to Get Aftershow ‘Archer After Hours’ on FXx

‘Archer: 1999’ to Get Aftershow ‘Archer After Hours’ on FXx

The aftershow trend is still sticking around.

Archer: 1999 will be getting a companion aftershow at FXx called Archer After Hours to be hosted by cast members Amber Nash and Lucky Yates. For Archer’s longevity and rabid fan base, this makes a certain sense, but we’ll be curious to see how this plays out (and if this means that Archer will have more cliffhangers to drive the after show conversation).

What’s curious here is that this is, to our knowledge, the second network aftershow show for a comedy series. For a brief window of time, Rick and Morty had a live aftershow when Starburns Castle existed (RIP). It was pretty grand as they interviewed the writers in front of a live audience that got to watch the episode right before the aftershow taping.

If Archer After Hours does well enough, we’ll be curious to see if other series will make the jump (maybe The Simpsons, Barry, or maybe another Rick and Morty aftershow)

Colin Quinn’s Red State Blue State Is Now Going from Off-Broadway Show to Comedy Special at CNN

Colin Quinn’s new hour has found a new home. It’s pretty much assumed that his solo shows will eventually become specials. It’s interesting that there is a move from Netflix (where his last special was) to CNN, but we’re going to guess that Colin is getting to do pretty much what he wants at either place.

Also, maybe this will stream for free on CNN.com for brief period of time as well? We’ll just have to wait and see.

With W. Kamau Bell and United Shades of America and this recent announcement of a new Colin Quinn special (specifically focused on the political divisiveness all around right now), it would seem the CNN is aiming for a niche in political comedy specifically.

FX Orders Second Season of “What We Do In The Shadows”

Looks like FX is going to keep their comedy programming at its consistently high level with another season of the TV adaptation of What We Do In The Shadows.

Even thinking of what Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement will do with the sandbox of a second season of vampires trying to get by is pretty great. It’ll be thankfully come some time next year (a welcome respite for what’s sure to be another nasty election cycle).

Dave Chappelle To Receive Mark Twain Prize for Humor

Often, people overlook what specifically the Mark Twain Prize for Humor is given out for and just end up thinking it goes to living legends in comedy. Specifically, the award honors that have a significant cultural impact, perhaps changing the way we think about things, via humor.

Dave Chappelle, arguably better than many other recent recipients, fits this bill perfectly. No matter what you think of Chappelle, both now and then, he has left an indelible mark on the country (and the world for that matter) with his comedy and has, for many, changed how they see things. Certainly, his acceptance speech will be watched closely (maybe more closely than most of these Mark Twain Prize speeches save for Will Ferrell’s).

His ceremony is set for Oct. 27th at the Kennedy Center and will air likely weeks later. Already, we’re wondering what the odds are that they’ll do a bit where he no shows and hides on another continent.

Three Busy Debras Is Going to Series at Adult Swim Comedy Produced By Amy Poehler

Sandy Honig, Alyssa Stonoha, and Mitra Jouhari AKA Three Busy Debras are going to get their own, live action, quarter hour show at Adult Swim.

Those in the know have enjoyed their high absurdity both in shorts they’ve released and their special, pop-up engagement at Carnegie Hall.

Very soon, we’ll get to see their world of “Connecticut deranged housewives” unfold. Also, take note that this is Amy Poehler is going from EP’ing Broad City to EP’ing Three Busy Debras.

Personally, we can’t wait for this to give Adult Swim a bit of a fresh, new look.

Evan Shapiro Tasked with Reviving National Lampoon

The former head of Seeso, Evan Shapiro, has been appointed with the gargantuan task of reviving National Lampoon. The once heralded brand has switched several hands over the last few years and attempts to revive it to even some of its former glory have fallen short.

Shapiro curated quite the catalog of content, both originals and acquired, over at Seeso despite it being ultimately shuddered by NBC. Already, the adaptation of Let’s Go Atsuko (a woke Japanese game show) with Atsuko Okatsuka) into a series shows a bit of promise.

It’s yet another curious turn in the history of this brand and we’ll just have to wait and see what else Shapiro has up his sleeve that will hopefully reboot National Lampoon entirely.

A Musical Based On Sarah Silverman’s Memoir ‘The Bedwetter’ To Open Within Year

Sarah Silverman won’t be in it, but it is a part of her life story that focuses on, well, being a long time bedwetter. We are deeply curious to see her specific comedic sensibilities, which have gotten more personal and vulnerable over the years, translate into an Off-Broadway musical.

Also, this has us wondering if this is the start, whether intentional or not, to Silverman scoring an EGOT.

Hollywood Golden Boys Phil Lord and Chris Miller Move to Sony Pictures TV with Nine Figure Overall Deal

With their contract at 20th Century Fox TV coming to a close, Phil Lord and Chris Miller who are responsible for launching the LEGO Movie franchise and the critical and commercial success of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse just landed a massive deal at Sony Pictures TV to develop series, both live action and animated, including a focus on the Marvel characters that Sony still owns (guess there will still be two MCUs for quite some time, huh?).

We can’t wait to see what this means for Lord and Miller and maybe Sony perhaps rallying back into the ever-crowded race of content. If there were a duo to make something great, funny, and self-aware out of the complicated dichotomy between Sony’s Marvel characters and the actual Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’d be Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

We’ll just have to wait and see how they dazzle us beyond our expectations yet again.

HBO Smartly Picks Up Armando Iannucci’s Latest Comedy ‘Avenue 5’ to Series

As Veep is closing out its final season, there was a bit of time where we weren’t sure if there was going to be an Armando Iannucci comedy (Iannucci is undoubtedly one of the most genius comedic minds working today; see In The Loop, Death of Stalin, Thick of It in addition to Veep) on TV for us to ravenously consume.

HBO thankfully will be passing the baton from Veep to Avenue 5, Armando’s latest comedy that will be set in the future of space tourism and will star Hugh Laurie as a space cruise captain. As to what that might look or sound like, we’ll have to wait for a trailer, but Iannucci’s biting, fast-paced, brutally funny writing really ought to work in most backdrops. Maybe it’ll be a more whipsmart, hysterical version of the space cruise scenes from The Fifth Element?

Whatever it may be, we, like with all of Iannucci’s work, can’t wait to see it.

The Good Place, Nanette, Barry, and more Comedy Set To Win Peabody Awards

The entertainment recipients of The Peabody Awards were just announced and comedy almost swept the whole category.

The Good Place, Hannah Gadsby’s Nanette, Barry, The End of the F***ing World, Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj, and Steven Universe are all set to be honored with a prestigious Peabody Award soon. We’re glad to see that not-talked-about-enough End of the F***ing World and animated series Steven Universe are getting honored here as well as The Good Place receiving an award at a time when it should be regularly racking them up.

Also, we would like to note how great it is that nearly every tone in comedy is covered in this collection of winners.

Mike Myers Is Getting His Own Show Where He’ll Play a Bunch of Characters on Netflix

Honestly, this should have been a show a long time ago, no?

It’s nice to see that the vacuum of sketch comedy is filling up (and it seems like Netflix is leading a large part of it with this untitled Mike Myers characters show and the upcoming Tim Robinson series I Think You Should Leave.

There are very few details, but we’ll be curious if Dr. Evil, Wayne, Coffee Talk, etc. will make any sort of cameos here. We’ll just have to wait and see.
