The GLAAD Media Awards in LA will take place on April 1st at the Beverly Hilton with the amazing Cameron Esposito set as host for the evening’s ceremony honoring achievements in media for the LGBTQ community.

Esposito has been a favorite for ours for a long time and we sincerely hope that this is another step for Cameron towards hosting way more things.

By the way, you can actually attend this event (if you’ve got deep pockets). Tickets range from $500-$40,000 and you can get them here.

Ethan Coen Pens an Open Letter Asking Trump to Help Make American Poetry Great Again and Make Him Poet Laureate of the United States

Yep, Coen Brother Ethan Coen has joined the fray in taking satirical shots at the Commander-in-Chief that might go over his head if the irony or satire were explained separately. This open letter he posted at HuffPo asks Trump directly to be appointed as the Poet Laureate of the United States (even though Ethan is far and away known more for the movies and television that he makes)

We can’t help but think of this as gonzo-Coen Brothers storytelling.

Ethan Coen even goes so far as to write in such simplistic language that even POTUS can understand it.

You Can Now Binge Watch “Absolutely Fabulous” on BBC and ITV’s New Streaming Service BritBox

Seeing the writing on the wall, BBC and ITV have launched their very own streaming service that will serve as a way to get all the British TV you could ever want. They’re hitting that notion on the noggin by calling in BritBox.

Now, Seeso does already offer up a good deal of great British comedy from Alan Partridge to Blackadder to Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace and so much more. However, they didn’t get access to one of the most beloved comedies under the Union Jack, Absolutely Fabulous.

If you don’t have the DVDs, you’ll now be able to binge Ab Fab through BritBox as well as Fawlty Towers and Gavin & Stacey.

If you truly are an Anglophile, the $6.99 per month subscription fee might just be worth it to you.

Two Years Later, ‘The Interview’ Remains Google Play’s Highest Selling Movie Ever

If there was no Sony Hack, we have a feeling that this headline above would have probably not happened. Having seen it, we think it the satire could have reached higher with its aims of poking fun at the North Korean regime. 52% at Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic would suggest a similar feeling from critics.

The Interview streamed on Netflix for two years and still made top sales, which suggests to us that many folks bought The Interview as a political act.

At some point, someone will make another North Korean satire (especially if the recent defector is right about the reach of outside information making its way inside North Korea). If it’s someone on the level of Armando Iannucci or Iannucci himself, we can barely imagine what that situation will be like.

A Weekly Jim Jefferies Late Night Show Will Premiere on Comedy Central This Summer

Jim Jefferies, who has always been an unfiltered comedian that dives head first into touchy subjects, is now getting a weekly late night show on Comedy Central where he can offer his take on the insanity that’s going on that week.

Jefferies’ recent Netflix special got a lot of attention for his bit on gun control and Jim also made headlines when he told Piers Morgan to “f*ck off” on Real Time with Bill Maher.

There aren’t any specifics on the format (or even an title), but we hope that Jefferies allows for plenty of debate on his show.

YouTube Announces Live TV Streaming Service, YouTube TV

YouTube Announces Live TV Streaming Service, YouTube TV

Watching live TV on your laptop was inevitable and, from the looks of it, the time for that innovation is here. For comedy, that could start to make a much clearer bridge between web content and television.

YouTube will be offering up a skinny bundle of channels that can be watched live or DVR’d including major broadcast networks as well as prestige networks like FX allowing you to watch Atlanta or Baskets live. However, they’re missing such necessary channels like HBO. Also, they will only to be initially offer up YouTube TV in major markets.

This is a step in the right direction, but there is still a lot of ground to cover by combining live television and streaming services. Whoever can figure out a well priced bundle that includes live TV networks and access to the big streaming services (Netflix, Amazon, Hulu) so you can watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Veep, Broad City, and Catastrophe wherever and whenever might just have the keys to the web/TV kingdom.

When that happens, the playing field might be even more level than it is now and highly respected web series might start to be seen in the same regard as highly praised half hour sitcoms. Shows like High Maintenance are obviously ahead of the curve here.

Donald Trump Faux Memoir Being Written with Audiobook That Will Feature Alec Baldwin

The title “You Can’t Spell America Without Me: The Really Tremendous Inside Story of My Fantastic First Year as President Donald J. Trump"  is, as the POTUS would put it, tremendous.

Novelist Kurt Andersen, who also was a co-founder of Spy Magazine, will write the fake memoir for Penguin Press and an accompanying audiobook will feature SNL’s Trump, Alec Baldwin. They’re currently looking towards a November release date.

We’re curious to see if Alec has to put on a power tie that’s way too long, don a bad wig, and contort his face for the entire duration of the audiobook recording just to stay in character.

Netflix Lines Up Two Louis C.K. Comedy Specials, One of Which is Debuting in April

Netflix has got specials on deck from Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Amy Schumer, Jerry Seinfeld, and now, Louis C.K. It’s almost like they’re trying do a stand-up comedy equivalent of a planetary alignment.

The first of the two specials that C.K. will be doing is simply called 2017 and was taped in, of all places that you could tape a special right now, Washington D.C. Given Louis being vocal on the POTUS having plenty of parallels to Hitler, there’s an extra layer of intrigue on top of a new C.K. special coming out. “2017″ will start streaming on Netflix on Tuesday, April 4th.

With all these gigantic comedy stars, one has to wonder where Netflix goes from here in regards to comedy specials.

FYI, their show The Americans won an award for Drama too.

The Death of Stalin, The French Graphic Novel That Armando Iannucci’s Latest Movie Is Based on, To Get English Language Translation

The highly anticipated latest film Armando Iannucci following the struggle for power following the death of Stalin was actually based on a French graphic novel of the same name by Fabien Nury and Thierry Robin.

With Iannucci’s name on it, a stellar cast, and North American distribution secured, it would only stand to reason that the source material graphic novel get an English language translation. Titan Comics will be stepping in to publish the translation and will release it later this fall.

It’s not everyday that there’s a graphic novel that’s less about alternate history focusing on Stalin that gets adapted into a movie by the creator of Veep. So, maybe it’ll be worth your time when the English language version comes out several months from now.

The Big Sick, Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gordon’s Love Story, Will Get a Wide Theatrical Summer Release

The Big Sick tells the story of how Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gordon became the amazing couple that they are now. It had a great showing at Sundance and has since been bought up to possibly be a big time summer romantic comedy this year.

Kumail and Emily wrote the movie, Michael Showalter directed, and Judd Apatow produced it, which hopefully are all the right ingredients for something that will be a critical and commercial success amongst all the tent-pole action franchise releases that it will undoubtedly be up against.

The Big Sick will start rolling out in theaters on June 23rd, then hit a theater near you on July 14th.

The Steve Allen Theater/Center For Inquiry, Along with Trepany House, Will Be Torn Down This Summer

There seems to be a disturbing trend of local theaters around LA being torn down in order to build condos.

The Steve Allen Theater, the long time home of The Tomorrow Show with Ron Lynch, the first home of Re-Animator the Musical, a place where the likes of Marc Maron, Bill Burr, Bob Odenkirk and David Cross worked out long sets, etc., is coming to an end this Summer. That includes the Center for the Inquiry and Trepany House, the non-profit behind the programming at the Steve Allen.

The building will be torn down so a new set of condos can be built.

There is no word yet on when the final days will exactly be or, more importantly, their shows will have to find a new home. You can read the Steve Allen/Trepany House’s own Amit Itelman’s announcement of the whole plan here.

In the meantime, we urge you to go see one of the final shows (that includes Tomorrow! w/Ron Lynch) at the Steve Allen over the next few months.

Sarah Silverman Will Now Be Doing a Netflix Comedy Special

Well, Netflix now has quite the stacked deck for 2017. Following from Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, and Amy Schumer,

Sarah Silverman is the latest big name comedian to have done their last comedy special at HBO and is set to do their newest special at Netflix. Silverman will shoot her special soon and Liam Lynch will be directing along with JASH, which she co-founded, producing.

We’re are thoroughly intrigued, given how outspoken Sarah has been in the political spectrum and the times that we’re living in now, what exactly she will do with this new special.

IFC Films Buys North American Rights to Armando Iannucci’s ‘The Death of Stalin’

One might be wondering what the creator of Veep, In The Loop, and The Thick of It has been doing since he has handed off the show to the very capable hands of David Mandel.

Well, Armando Iannucci has been making a satire of the last days of Stalin that were filled with high ranking in-fighting, a particular specialty of his. A cast boasting Steve Buscemi, Michael Palin, and Jeffrey Tambor is something to get very excited for as well.

It would seem that these days that any of Iannucci’s work is applicable to the political, global, cultural climate more than it has ever been. With a focus on authoritarian figure to boot, this feeling raises our anticipation for Armando’s Death of Stalin that will get a U.S. release thanks to IFC’s recent purchase of the North American rights at Berlinale 2017.
