Pick of the Day: Heart of Darkness: DARKNESS FOREVER (in LA) 9/29

July 17, 2023
News
greg barris, los angeles comedy, zebulon

Comedian/mystic/raconteur Greg Barris has been gallanting from city to city and engaging in comedic deep healing for decades now, often under the banner of his otherworldly variety show Heart of Darkness.

If you’re a long time comedy fan out of NYC and LA, we hope this news won’t make you feel too old, but Heart of Darkness is celebrating its 20th Anniversary this year. That’s 20 years of Barris spreading comedic joy, forgiveness (there’s usually a forgiveness song where audience members get forgiven), ethereal tunes, and more in many different places, but always to such an open-hearted crowd.

This Heart of Darkness: DARKNESS FOREVER 20th Anniversary/2o Years of Darkness is set to revel in the darkness at Zebulon in LA on Fri. Sept. 29th at 7PM with the likes of Amber Coffman, Nick Thune, Moshe Kasher, Kurt Braunohler, and Pete Harper. The show might be a ways away from now, but “20 years of darkness” deserves to be sold out in advance. Go get your tickets for $22.25 a pop here.

Pick of the Day: Sarah Squirm (in LA) 9/14

Sarah Squirm is returning to back to LA as part of the leg of her international Live & in the Flesh tour this year. Squirm will have just returned stateside from the UK and triumphantly take the stage with herself and all of her subversive grotesque hilarity at Zebulon, the last place she had a show in LA before she got brought up to the majors at SNL.

Wed. Sept. 14th is the date that you got to mark down for Sarah Squirm: Live & in the Flesh with a 7PM PT & 10PM PT show. The early show is already sold out with a wait list available for sign-up, but you can buy tickets for the late Sarah Squirm show at 10 for $18.60 right now right here. No matter which one you go for, you better act fast before you don’t have any chances at all to get tickets.

Pick of the Day: Chris Gethard: America’s Loosest Cannon (in LA) 6/25

While the Internet is fixated with Chris Rock getting slapped by Will Smith at last night’s Oscars and subsequently giving a surge to Rock’s ticket sales for his upcoming tour dates, Chris Rock is not the only renowned Chris in comedy that you should shell out for tickets to go see.

Chris Gethard, comedian, podcaster, TV host, actor, raconteur, pride of NJ, alt comedy elder statesmen, is back out on tour in person. He’ll be doing various stops that may be either a live episode of Gethard’s podcast Beautiful Anonymous or a special, intimate evening of stand-up comedy.

For his LA stop, Gethard will be bringing his wonderfully hilarious vulnerability and unflappable genuineness to Zebulon on Jun. 25th at 7PM PT. Tickets for what will be called Chris Gethard: America’s Loosest Cannon are on sale now for $24.60 and you ought to go snag them right now.

Oh yeah, for NYC folks, we should mention that Gethard will be opening for Jawbreaker 4/27-4/30.

Pick of the Day: The Neil Hamburger Event (in LA) 9/26

August 13, 2021
News

We can remember the last Neil Hamburger and Special Guests that we went to so vividly. It was the end of 2019 and we were at the then-still-alive Satellite in Silverlake and so many of us didn’t know or didn’t want to admit what was coming, so we were just gathering indoors without thinking there was anything really wrong.

Thus, we got to enjoy one of LA’s longest standing residencies by a comedian, Neil Hamburger, trash various musicians while coughing hoarsely and holding way too many rocks glasses as we have gotten to do for years and years and years.

The Satellite LA is no more and, because of COVID-19, there hasn’t been a top-billed Neil Hamburger show in so many, many months. However, that’s changing as The Neil Hamburger Event is set to take over Zebulon come Sun. Sept. 26th at 8PM PT. You really ought to snag your tickets now (and hopefully nothing has to get rescheduled because of the Delta variant). They’re $14.76 and you can get ’em here.

Pick of the Day: HELLTRAP NIGHTMARE (in LA) 8/28

July 16, 2021
News

THE world’s premier horror comedy extravaganza known as HELLTRAP NIGHTMARE is crawling out from the cocoon it has been quarantining in and putting up its first show in so, so very long.

HELLTRAP NIGHTMARE’s ringleader Sarah Squirm will be leading off the show once again in its new-ish home, Zebulon, between Atwater and Frogtown. Throughout lockdown Squirm and HELLTRAP NIGHTMARE put on several stacked variety comedy live-stream fundraisers that were probably some of the virtual shows throughout the entirety of quarantine.

All these months later, on Sat. Aug. 28th w/doors at 8PM PT, all the cleverly engineered and devised grotesque body horror and socio-political humor will rise once more to all of our collective enjoyment in what sure as hell feels like the end times.

Tickets are on sale now for $12.30 and you can and very, very much should go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Weirdo Night with Dynasty Handbag 8/30

The beloved Weirdo Night with Dynasty Handbag at Zebulon is doing a virtual edition of their monthly gathering of all sorts of weirdo performers from all sorts of wondrous corners of performance (though it’s mostly in and around comedy). The live-stream will be in support of the performers on the show as well as Zebulon, which is probably still one of LA’s hippest venues after all these months in lockdown.

For this virtual edition of Weirdo Night, the line-up includes:

  • Blasia Discoteca
  • Hedia Maron
  • Morgan Bassichis
  • Patti Harrison
  • PonySweat
  • Sarah Squirm
  • Smiling Beth

It’s one of the most uniquely, splendid nights in all of LA, which is something we don’t say lightly. This latest Weirdo Night is set for Sun. Aug. 30th at 7PM PT/10PM ET. Go get tickets for $22.60 here.

Neil Hamburger, America’s favorite lounge act character that mostly roasts music, is going really big this month. There will be a bigger line-up than his usual residency has slated (that will probably get bigger than this flyer), but all of this will be done in service of Australian Wildfire Relief.

As you can see, this night of true variety will be dazzling, hysterical, and, of course, go to a great cause.

Go get your tickets here (they’ll probably sell out fast)!

At one of LA’s hippest venues Zebulon, performance artist/comedian Dynasty Handbag has been curating a hosting one of their, in our opinion, marquee nights with Weirdo Night! for two years (though it has been running a bit longer than that around town).

This transformative and hilarious evening collects all sorts of performers that are in or adjacent to comedy, bringing in a wonderfully bizarre collection of multi-disciplinary performers, magical musicians, and all other artists that defy categorization in a great way.

For their 2 Yr. Zebulon Anniversary this Sunday, they’ve got a line-up of Kate Berlant, Malik Gaines, Amelia Bande, Charles Galin, and, of course, Dynasty Handbag (Jibz Cameron).

Tickets are $15 and you can go get them right now right here.

Running a comedy show in either NYC or LA for over a decade is a remarkable feat in of itself. To do so in both is another thing entire together that requires a bit of magic.

Such is Greg Barris’ Heart of Darkness, which will be marking its 15th year of galavanting back and forth across the U.S as a comedy/variety/quasi-spiritual experience show with a great line-up at the ultra hip Zebulon. Don’t miss out on this.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door and you can (and should) get them here.

Josh Fadem and Brent Weinbach, two comedians that are mastered in the art of being silly, will “lead” a “forum” on art. We’re not sure exactly how that’ll manifest, but we’re excited for whatever that will end up being.

Also, Ron Funches and Dan Mintz from Bob’s Burgers are just a few of their guests.

Tickets will be available at the door.
