Whether we like it or not, we are all in our feelings all the time in these days of COVID-19. Stuck at home, faced with the reality of the world literally and figuratively being on fire.

So, why not get in your feelings with some of the best musical improvisers out there in Every Place I Cry, a “fully improvised emo experience” that ought to satisfy your nostalgia as much as be cathartic for this truly absurd, but very real world we live in. Jess McKenna, Zach Reino, Nick Mandernach, and Ross Bryant are almost unrivaled in their improv and musical skills and form the fictional titular emo band, Every Place I Cry. Even as folks that don’t particularly care for emo, EPIC got to us.

They’ll be doing a live-stream via Dynasty Typewriter on Thurs. Sept. 24th at 6PM PT/9PM ET. Tickets start at $5 and you can (and should) get them here.

It has been a minute since the duo behind Off Book: The Improvised Musical Podcast, Jessica McKenna and Zach Reino, have gone out just as The Zach and the Jess to do whatever musical comedy they damn well please (improvised, scripted, or otherwise).

Thankfully, they’ll be kicking off 2020 with a night at Silverlake’s The Satellite with a fantastic collection of musical comedy from the likes of Demi Adejuyigbe, Erin and Melissa, The Sloppy Boys, and even Zach and Jess’ “emo group” Every Place I Cry.

It’s absolutely one of the first must-see shows for next year.

The Zach and The Jess at The Satellite is set for Tues. Jan. 21st at 8:30PM. Snag your tickets now for $8 here.

Looks like the Inner Sanctum at UCB Sunset (which we’d like to note can feel more intimate than the main stage next door at times) is having more stacked shows these days.

Presented by UCB co-founder Matt Walsh, Dodo’s Retirement Party will be a variety show as well as a tribute to “Dolores (Dodo) Portencasso” as she retires from “Corn Products”. Oh yeah, the line-up just happens to be, as we mentioned before, pretty damn stacked (see flyer above).

Tickets for this show next week are $12 and you can (and should) get them here.

The Zack and The Jess’ “Calendar Album” Is One Great Way to Get Through 2019

Zach Reino and Jessica McKenna have dazzled you with their musical comedy talents for years now with series, live shows, and, most recently, their celebrated improvised musical podcast Off Book.

For 2019, it looks they’re going by The Zach and The Jess and have released an entire concept album called The Calendar Album that gives you their uber-clever songwriting and beautiful harmonizing for any time of the year. They even cover holidays that don’t normally get their own dedicated song. With that said, Zach and Jess have raised the bar for any recording artists that make an album just for the holidays and no other time of year.

We also love that they recommend, “…the correct way to listen to it is 1.5 songs per month.”

So, please get and enjoy The Calendar Album here or wherever you get your music.

Jessica McKenna and Zach Reino are so good at improvising musicals that we honestly bet that someone who actually despises musicals might actually enjoy the podcast, Off Book: the Improvised Musical. From start to finish, with musical accompaniment by Scott Passarella, McKenna and Reino dazzle with making up a legit musical out of thin air and having it be funny from so many different angles at the same time.

Their latest live show will be at the end of April, specifically Sun. April 29th at 7PM at Nerdmelt at Meltdown Comics. Tickets are $10 and they will sell out. Get them here.

Whether you’ve seen Hamilton or not or even love musical theater or not, we’d wager that you’d still enjoy Shamilton (an improvised musical in the style of Hamilton, but based on a different famous person), the new project from musical improv troupe Baby Wants Candy.

After all, it was one of our favorite 100 comedy things from 2017.

The next Shamilton will be on Sun. Jan. 28th at 9PM at UCB Sunset. Tickets are $7 and you can (and should) get them here.
