Pick of the Day: Ester Steinberg LIVE RECORDING (near LA) 3/23

February 29, 2024
News
ester steinberg, la comedy, los angeles, santa monica, stand up comedy, the crow comedy club

Many attempts were made at making comedy specials when we were in the thick of pandemic times and, we’d say, very few were successful (especially the ones that were done outside and socially distanced). It takes a special grade of comedian to pull off doing stand-up like that and Ester Steinberg is one such rare talent to pull off doing a special to folks in their cars parked outside of The Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

With that in mind, you shouldn’t pass up what she can do in appropriate comedy environment, i.e. a comedy club, which is exactly happening for her next special. Ester will be taping her latest special next month on Sat. Mar. 23rd at 7PM & 9PM at Santa Monica’s Crow Comedy Club (LA’s only comedy club with FREE parking). Tickets are only $20 and you shouldn’t miss out on Ester doing stand-up since you won’t have to stay in your car to watch her. Go get ’em here.

Many a thing is bandied about when it comes to DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion), but, often, little action is actually taken to make it happen. The EPIC Players is one such organization that, since 2016, have dedicated themselves to shines a light on neuro-diversity through their unique, non-profit theater company.

Sounds pretty grand, yes?

Well, EPIC Players will be having an exclusive comedy fundraiser with a plenty inclusive line-up featuring some amazing neuro-diverse comedians (and some NTs as well) at Santa Monica’s Crow Comedy Club (keep in mind that they’re located in a gorgeous arts colony with a gigantic free parking lot) this coming Friday, Dec. 1st at 8PM.

On the bill thus far are:

Joe Eurell
Danielle Perez
Jessica Keenan
Liz Pollack
Nic Novicki
Rachel Barcellona

Tickets for Standup For Inclusion: A Fundraiser For EPIC Players are only $35 and you can (and should) go get ’em here.

Pick of the Day: A Night of Comedy Characters @ The Crow (near LA) 9/7

August 25, 2023
News
crow comedy club, los angeles comedy, santa monica

The LA comedy scene is vast, often with reaches so far that this furthest edges don’t really come to the other side all that often. That’s all to say that a lot of the marvelous comedy that happens on the Eastside, and there’s a lot of it, doesn’t really find its way West of the 405 too much.

So, when the likes of LA comedy darlings Lisa Gilroy, Alyssa Limperis, Hannah Pilkes, Lily Sullivan, Taylor Ortega, and Natalie Ortega are gathered to do a very special westside night of character comedy, anyone with a 310 area code should absolutely not miss out. Santa Monica’s newest comedy club, The Crow, is putting on such a night with that very line-up (in addition to being a few degrees cooler and having, believe it or not, a gigantic free parking lot) on Thurs. Sept. 7th at 6PM.

Tickets are only $15, which is definitely not your typical Santa Monica price, and you best get tickets here even if you don’t live on the westside.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 115: Nicole Blaine & Building Comedy in an Art Colony

June 8, 2022
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
comedy theater, deadpool, late late show, los angeles comedy, nicole blaine, santa monica, the crow

While the reverberations of the pandemic are still being felt and both the commercial and artistic sides of comedy have been changed forever, there is hope springing eternal in new venues that have blossomed.

Thanks to the blood, sweat, tears, and compassion of one Nicole Blaine, a longtime producer and comedian, her club, The Crow, represents a new oasis for comedy in a veritable comedy desert  on the Westside of LA (both the county and the city) relative to LA’s thriving Eastside. We talk to her about establishing a comedy club in the now, in an artist colony, hand built chairs, and, of course, free Santa Monica parking.

Los Angeles (and, More Importantly, the West Side) Is Getting a New Comedy Venue, The Crow

May 10, 2022
News
bergamot station, crow comedy, la comedy, santa monica, the crow

The majority of comedy in LA lives and breathes on the so-called Eastside. It was true far before the pandemic and is potentially even truer on this side of the pandemic. For years, the only dedicated comedy venues on LA’s widespread and oh-so-nice West Side were the Comedy & Magic Club and M.I.’s Westside Comedy Theater. The former was embedded deep enough in the Beach Cities that it’d be a trek even if you were coming from Santa Monica and the latter was very tucked away in an alley parallel to the famous 3rd Street Promenade.

Thankfully, to comedian/producer/educator Nicole Blaine and husband Mickey Blaine, The Crow will be the West Side and LA’s newest comedy venue (and that’s while the sheen on The Elysian and The Glendale Room are still very nice and bright). Blaine promises it for to be, “the intersection where art meets community through a comedy club and an educational space.” Shows and classes for the major disciplines in comedy will be available for all ages and Blaine’s extensive record in producing very fun live comedy around town (such as the mostly headliner and one first timer stand-up show, Virgin Sacrifice) as well as her very own stand-up special makes us pretty excited to see what she has planned (already there’s going to be a weekly open mic, a mic for female and non-binary comics, and a benefit for Children’s Hospital LA).

Oh, you should know that The Crow will be located at the long standing art complex known as Bergamot Station in Santa Monica, which is a wondrous place in of itself, but also boasts one of LA’s most scarce resources: FREE PARKING.

Look for The Crow to get up and running starting in June, which will be so nice when you’re looking for it to be ten degrees cooler on days where it’s 90 or higher).

Visit crowcomedy.com for more info, shows, classes, etc. and follow @crowcomedy on IG to see their latest happenings.

Pretty, Pretty Pony is and has been, hands down, one of our favorite improv groups amidst the ever-multiplying number of improv teams in and throughout LA. You should always catch their monthly residency where they do improv based off of a monologist’s stories at the Westside Comedy Theater for their high-level, yet subversive long form improv done exquisitely by a cast of Cole Stratton, Joey Greer, Vanessa Ragland, Ed Roe, Atul Singh, Chris Alvarado.

This edition of Pretty, Pretty Pony is especially special as their guest monologist is none other than David X. Cohen who has brought us one of the more fun visions of the future with Futurama. Undoubtedly, his stories of his own past ought to be something pretty special too.

Tickets are only $6 and you can (and should) get them here.

As The Oscars tonight, we thought it’d we should give you a heads up on one of the few Oscar nominated comedies over the last several years (tonight’s a little different as Lady Bird, I, Tonya, The Big Sick, The Disaster Artist, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, The Square all scored nominations this year).

So, Wes Anderson Oscar nominated Moonrise Kingdom is playing at The Aero Theatre in Santa Monica a week from now.
