Pick of the Day: StraightioLab (in LA) 9/16

August 29, 2023
News
George Civeris, live podcast, los angeles comedy, sam taggart, straightiolab, teragram ballroom

NYC has the distinct pleasure of having the brilliant George Civeris and Sam Taggart, the hosts of the esteemed StraightioLab podcast, reside in their city. The duo are truly doing critical and acclaimed work exploring straight culture, which is pretty absurd (especially given how mainstream it is), through a gay lens (and being so damn funny while doing it).

Thankfully, they’re going on their Lab Leak Tour for StraightioLab and one of their stops is a still hurricane free Los Angeles. on Sat. Sept. 16th, Civeris and Taggart will take the stage at the Teragram Ballroom near DTLA at 6PM. The show is only a couple weeks away and, somehow, there are tickets still available ($30 plus fees). You might want to snag your very own tickets before they sell out right here.

Process.

It’s one of the most mysterious and elusive elements in the art form of comedy. Trying to decipher an individual comedian’s process might actually be harder than making a room full of strangers laugh. That said, Jesse David Fox has done tremendous work in uncovering how comedians actually do their work and pull off that magic that is making people laugh with his long running podcast, Good One.

Fox is doing a special edition of the podcast that will show off his expertise in front of a live audience at Union Hall on Fri. Mar. 17th at 7PM. Phoebe Robinson, StraightioLab, Marcia Belsky, Francesca D’Uva, and possibly more will do short sets followed by an in-depth interview about said set.

It ought to be something special as you’ll get an in-real-time, up-close-and-personal look at exactly how some of NYC’s funniest do what they do best.

Tickets are $18.98. Go get them now before they probably sell out here.

Pick of the Day: 15th Annual 50 First Jokes *RESCHEDULED* (in NYC) 2/18

January 11, 2022
News
2022, 50 first jokes, alison leiby, anthony devito, brooklyn, chanel ali, Charlie Bardey, Devon Walker, dina hashem, emmy blotnick, George Civeris, john f o'donnell, kate willett, kenice mobley, martin urbano, Max Wittert, nyc comedy, petey deabreu, rojo perez, sam taggart, shalewa sharpe, Sonia Denis, stand up comedy, tom thakkar

Well, we had already highlighted NYC’s 50 First Jokes for 2022 as a #pickoftheday already, but that was when it was set for this month right as the year had started. Well, The Bell House had scheduled it before it knew how Omicron would overtake the world and spark a whole new series of outbreaks that would force the good majority of live comedy to go dark for most of December 2021 and January 2022.

Unlike some other shows that were slated for Jan. 2022 and opted to cancel altogether, 50 First Jokes is still happening, but will be doing so for the first time in its storied history in February, specifically on Fri. Feb. 18th at 8PM ET at The Bell House. That will very likely mean that everyone’s “first” joke(s) of 2022 will be much sharper than if they had only gotten a week to work on it (even though it’s a perennial good time).

Thankfully, the host is still John F. O’Donnell and the line-up is still stacked with NYC Comedy’s best and brightest including: Alison Leiby, Anthony Devito, Chanel Ali, Charlie Bardey, Devon Walker, Dina Hashem, Emmy Blotnick, George Civeris, Kate Willett, Kenice Mobley, Martin Urbano, Max Wittert, Petey DeAbreu, Rojo Perez, Sam Taggart, Shalewa Sharpe, Sonia Denis, and Tom Thakkar. More TBA!

Tickets are still available at $15 and hopefully, Omicron will have subsided enough so that we won’t have to write about this being rescheduled again. Oh yeah, it should go without saying at this point in the pandemic that proof of vaccination is required for entry.

Go snag tickets here.

Pick of the Day: 50 First Jokes (in NYC) 1/8

December 16, 2021
News
2022, alison leiby, anthony devito, chanel ali, Charlie Bardey, Devon Walker, dina hashem, emmy blotnick, George Civeris, john f o'donnell, kate willett, kenice mobley, martin urbano, Max Wittert, new year's, new york comedy, petey deabreu, rojo perez, sam taggart, shalewa sharpe, Sonia Denis, tom thakkar

A gathering of 50 comedians, much less 50 audience members indoors wasn’t really happening at the start of 2021. So, it’s been awhile since we’ve had the legitimate in-person annual comedy kick-off to a new year with 50 First Jokes.

Perhaps, pending some variants, an actual in-vaccinated-person edition of 50 First Jokes will happen for 2022 in NYC. The Bell House in Brooklyn will host the bright and shiny new jokes from the best of the NYC comedy scene, which ought to have a different, more electric urgency to them considering where we are now and where will be three weeks from now.

On the bill thus far: Alison Leiby, Anthony Devito, Chanel Ali, Charlie Bardey, Devon Walker, Dina Hashem, Emmy Blotnick, George Civeris, Kate Willett, Kenice Mobley, Martin Urbano, Max Wittert, Petey DeAbreu, Rojo Perez, Sam Taggart, Shalewa Sharpe, Sonia Denis, Tom Thakkar, and host John F. O’Donnell.

Of course, as you can tell by the count of those names, there will be way more comedians shuffling onto the Bell House stage to get out their freshest bits (as we round the corner on nearly two years of this waking nightmare).

2022’s 50 First Jokes is set for Sat. Jan. 8th at 8PM ET. Tickets are $15 right now and you best get them here before they sell out.

Enjoy Sam Taggart’s PSA for Joe Biden (Though It’s Not for His Presidential Run)

With the DNC passed and Joe Biden officially becoming the Democratic Nominee for POTUS in the 2020 General Election, there are still a good amount of folks that are stirring about having to settle for Biden with the alternative being the world (probably) ending (for real this time) under another 4 years of Trump.

So, Sam Taggart is setting aside his clever satirical characters to spread a message of support, albeit a special kind that has nothing to do with the race for POTUS, for Biden.

Please enjoy it here (and please, please, please go vote to make our current nightmare a little less nightmar-ish).

Hailing from Brooklyn, Sam Taggart will be gracing us once again with his clever/silly wit, verve, characters, songs (he did, after all, do a whole wonderful show about being a comic for a dance club, i.e. a “club comic”) for his new show All 4 U. Joining him will be the wondrous Joel Kim Booster and Charles Gould.

All 4 U is coming to the Lyric Hyperion on May 20th at 10PM. Tickets are $8 and you can (and should) get them here.
