SF Sketchfest Announces Dates for 2022, Open Submissions, and Will Require Proof of Vaccination

SF Sketchfest snuck in one of the last big festivals in 2020 right before lockdown and then went virtual for 2020 and, we’re glad to say, is back for a full-fledged, in-person festival for 2022.

Specifically, one of the world’s foremost comedy festivals, both in duration and depth and variety of comedy, will be taking place from Jan. 7th-23rd, 2022 all throughout San Francisco. Even though that’s a ways away, you’ll be glad to know that they’re taking proper precautions by requiring proof of vaccination against COVID-19 for everyone involved including attendees, performers and staff.

Tickets go on sale in November, but, more importantly, you can submit for consideration be part of the SF Sketchfest (and they pretty much accept any and all types of comedy) up until midnight PT on Oct. 15th.

Gimlet Media Becomes First Podcast Network to Unionize at Writers Guild of America

Gimlet Media Becomes First Podcast Network to Unionize at Writers Guild of America

Though Gimlet isn’t primarily known as a comedy podcast network, their unionization could be groundbreaking for the entire world of podcasting, which comedy dominates in (if they pull this off and don’t upset their owners at Spotify).

The Onion also unionized at the end of 2018 after so many other digital outlets went under or got absorbed into their larger media companies.

Potentially, this could mean that places like Earwolf, Headgum, Forever Dog, Starburns Audio, and All Things Comedy could unionize in the not so distant future and podcasting can be even further legitimatized than it already is (imagine getting benefits for podcasting?), but we will probably just have to wait and see how Gimlet fares here.

If you’ve got a great podcast idea, but are looking to be part of a network (and have a budget to produce it), Gimlet Creative and Squarespace’s Casting Call contest might just be the thing for you.

They’re having an open call for submissions for podcast ideas until May 21st.

If you enter, the following might happen:

Our panel of judges will join host Jonathan Goldstein to select three applicants to fly to New York and produce their pilots. At the end of the journey, one talented hopeful will be awarded a mini-series produced by Gimlet and maybe even a Squarespace sponsorship of their own—because is a podcast even a podcast without one?

One of the funniest podcasts around, Superego, is returning to Largo to let loose Jeremy Carter, Mark McConville, Matt Gourley, and Paul F. Tompkins to wherever their beautifully chaotic improvised scenes takes them.

Superego Live! added a late show to their evening at Largo at the Coronet Theatre on Saturday, March 5th. The early show is sold out, but you can still get tickets for 10:30PM for $30.

Someone Who Writes at Jeopardy! Seems to Really Likes Comedy Podcasts

More and more answers seem to come from someone who not only listens to comedy podcasts, but thinks that they’re culturally relevant enough to be on Jeopardy.

In its 32nd season on the air, Jeopardy! stands an television landmark and the topics, of which they derive their answers from, have a certain distinction within history and pop culture.

Just in the past month, both the great comedy podcasts Superego, Greg Proops’ Smartest Man in the World, and Gilbert Gottfried’s Amazing Colossal Podcast  have been mentioned as answers.

Jeopardy! mentioned @goSuperego! Amazing – well done! @MattGourley @PFTompkins @markmcconville @ShuntMcGuppin pic.twitter.com/9YwsxkiKg8

Hey! The Smartest Man in the World @GregProops Podcast was a question on the Smartest show in the world @Jeopardy!! pic.twitter.com/prnI4O50UZ

Thank u to all our fans for making #GGACP a success & a question on @Jeopardy RT & SUBSCRIBE https://t.co/AwsNK8H1ol pic.twitter.com/pz15fqpVVY

We don’t know how rigorous the vetting process for the writing the answers that contestants have to guess the right question for, but it’s obvious that podcasts are within the zeitgeist enough and potentially have enough staying power to make into the realm of the renowned trivia show in existence.

Also, whoever came up with those questions seems to have particularly good taste in podcasts as well.

UPDATE: the someone/whoever we’re referring to appears to be Jeopardy! writer Mark Gaberman.

Let us know if you see any other Jeopardy! answers that are comedy podcast related @thecomedybureau on Twitter and we’ll add it to this post

Challenge Against Podcasting Patent Troll Taken to USPTO by EFF

If you’re not at all familiar, the world of podcasting is in potential danger by what is known as “patent trolls”, people trying to obtain licensing fees off of a patent while they themselves do not enact or produce any such services or products from the very patent they’re trying to profit from.

Luckily, podcasters have banded together, specifically the Electronic Frontier Foundation and are taking it to straight to the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Hopefully, this will be resolved soon, so we can go back to listen comedians get deep with no worry.

Earwolf Launches New Podcast, Hollywood Handbook with Sean Clements and Hayes Davenport

Earwolf adds another podcast to their expansive network focusing in on “breaking into entertainment” stories, which goes to show you that podcast is starting to grow from just being exclusively, purely focused on comedy.

Well, aside from both Sean and Hayes being comedy writers and interviewing Jake Johnson from the hit sitcom New Girl, it’ll focus on the more industry side of things.

thisbetterbefunny:

In the inaugural episode of the “This Better Be Funny” Podcast, host, creator, writer/comedian Jake Kroeger, co-host, writer/comedian Jeremy Paul, comedienne and Cristiana delve into deep conversation involving the pitching of jokes/sketches/bits to each other and the subsequent approval or rejection of them. Taking place at some cafe in Hollywood, the three go down the comedy rabbit hole and wonder if they just walked one of the coffee shop’s patrons.

Many folks wanted us to start a podcast talking comedy. In our opinion, there are way too many of those and, honestly, we can’t do better than Marc Maron and WTF. Instead, we’re doing what hasn’t been done by any other comedy podcast (if it has, then please let us know as we’d love to hear it), which is get to the crux of the comedic creative process. It’s the process that Jerry Seinfeld’s documentary Comedian gave a brief glimpse of, but never fully explored.

Specifically, the This Better Be Funny Podcast will have comedians pitching what they think is funny to each and going down the comedy “rabbit hole” in search for the truly funny. In the spirit of the podcast, it’s not recorded at someone’s efficiency apartment in Echo Park where someone has to apologize for the mess and offer milk. This is recorded wherever comedians actually huddle together like dive bars, coffee shops, taco stands, and more and ask each other “Is this funny?”

Hosted by Jake Kroeger, the Director of the Comedy Bureau along with comedian Jeremy Paul who claims the only credit he needs is that he’s from Peoria, Il every week and a myriad of guests that range from “big time” to “about to break” to “funniest person that no one knows”, but ones that will always be funny.

Listen, laugh, be enlightened at horrible comedians can be to each other.

I’ma gonna be at Bridgetown Comedy Festival in gorgeous, sustainable Portland this weekend. What’s more, here are a couple of fairly recent and barely respectable podcasts I did in the near past:

UCB West Podcast (Ep. 2, 4/15/11)
with Billy Merritt & Casey Feigh

David Feldman Comedy Podcast (KPFK, 4/16/11)
with Eddie Pepitone and some of my favorite people in comedy (not to be confused)

I’m not going to include a picture in this post, just so people ignore it.

It’s right here on these two podcasts actually…
