And Here Are Your Grammy Comedy Nominees for 2021

November 24, 2020
News
comedy grammys, grammys, jerry seinfeld, nominees, patton oswalt, tiffany haddish

You might have seen that the nominees for the 2021 Grammys were announced this morning and, with that, there is just a handful of comedy folks that get the expressed distinction of being nominated for said Grammy. Usually, with how distribution of comedy specials work (i.e. most big time comedy specials get released as comedy albums somehow), comedy specials take up the bulk of the nomination slots and this year is no different (even though they were plenty of worthy stand-up albums that were released only as albums).

This year, the nominees for Best Comedy Album are:

Tiffany Haddish-Black Mitzvah
Patton Oswalt-I Love Everything
Jim Gaffigan-The Pale Tourist
Bill Burr-Paper Tiger
Jerry Seinfeld-23 Hours to Kill

All were specials on a big time streaming service and, four of out of the five were on Netflix. Still, Haddish and Oswalt offered up really uplifting specials and Burr got more introspective than he ever has with Paper Tiger.

Usually, the comedy category for The Grammys gets overshadowed by the dozens and dozens of other categories, but we’ll be watching closely for who wins on the CBS telecast of The Grammy Awards on Jan. 31st.

Here Are Your 2018 Primetime Emmys Comedy Nominees

July 13, 2018
Uncategorized
2018, emmys, nominees, primetime emmys

The Primetime Emmy nominees were, as you probably heard, announced yesterday. The Emmys are one of the few awards shows that actually gives comedy a fair shake and, as such, here are a few things worth noting about this year’s nominees.

–Atlanta tallied 16 nominations
-Alec Berg got nominated for writing and best series on both Barry and Silicon Valley
-Barry
got 13 nominations in its first season, five of which went to Bill Hader
-Megan Amram’s Emmy campaign web series is, in fact, nominated for an Emmy
-delightfully weird craft/sketch show At Home with Amy Sedaris on TruTV got nominated
-Laurie Metcalf got nominated for Roseanne, which is the only nomination for the series that has been transformed into The Conners
-the live comedy specials that were nominated this year were from Dave Chappelle, Steve Martin & Martin Short, Carol Burnett, and Night of Too Many Stars
-Sarah Silverman’s atypical talk show I Love You, America got nominated as a variety sketch series

We could drag on and on about snubs, but that’s just a never ending rabbit hole that we’d rather avoid considering the amount of great TV that’s out there.

Today, the nominations for the 2017 Primetime Emmys were announced. For comedy specifically, it’s probably what you expected.

Premium cable and streaming services continue to dominate the Emmys with Netflix and HBO coming out strong. FX also maintains its status as a premium cable network disguised as a basic cable network with its handful of nominations for Atlanta, Better Things, and Baskets.

Colbert’s Election special and Sam Bee’s Not the WHCD thankfully were bestowed nominations here as well.

One thing that was a delightful surprise is Lauren Lapkus and Ben Schwartz gaining nominations for their performances in The Earliest Show, a web series that followed a morning talk show with one of the hosts going through all the stages of grief.

Florence Foster Jenkins, 20th Century Women, and The Lobster Score Oscar Noms, But None for Deadpool

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE

My Life as a Zucchini
The Red Turtle
Zootopia

Also, Hail, Caesar! got a nomination for Best Production Design, Florence Foster Jenkins received another nomination for Best Costume, and A Man Called Ove for Best Make-Up and Hair.

As to be expected with the amount of socially relevant movies and the uber-escapist La La Land, The Oscars heavily favored dramas this year over comedy.

While nominations for other awards gave a bit of hope for Deadpool to sneak in as an outlier to the otherwise, mostly heavy handed fare, it ultimately was edged out. Comedy, per usual, got its attention in the writing category with two brilliant films, The Lobster from Yorgos Lanthimos and 20th Century Women from Mike Mills. Of course, what would the Oscars be without a nod to Meryl Streep. Her turn as one of the worst singers of all time in Florence Foster Jenkins, was typical award worthy Meryl.

German comedy Toni Erdmann continues to rack up nominations, which will hopefully encourage people to go see it despite its nearly 3 hour running time.

The awards ceremony is set for February 26th and will air on ABC. Get the full list of this year’s Oscar nominees here.

Atlanta, Better Things, Nathan For You, Veep, Last Week Tonight, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, BoJack Horseman Score WGA Awards TV Nominations

The perennial prestige comedy of HBO is alive and well, but upstarts at FX (Atlanta and Better Things) are also riding high for this year’s Writers Guild Awards TV nominations.

That being said, there’s one very noticeable snub: Full Frontal with Samantha Bee

It didn’t get nominated next to Last Week Tonight, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Late Night with Seth Meyers, and The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. We certainly hope that won’t happen elsewhere this awards season.

Transparent, Veep, Anomalisa, and Master of None Get Golden Globe Comedy Nominations as Well as Joy and The Martian

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association continues to have a broader definition of comedy than anyone else during awards season.

There are your favorites as well as the favored upstarts in the field of this year’s Golden Globes nominees. The consistently praised Anomalisa and Master of None, heavy returning favorites Veep, Silicon Valley, and Transparent, comedy superstar Amy Schumer for Trainwreck, and brash newcomer Rachel Bloom for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend all got nominations from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. There were even some noms for work that should be getting more love from more awards, but, somehow, isn’t. This includes Lily Tomlin’s turn in Grandma, Melissa McCarthy for Spy, and Hulu’s Casual from Jason Reitman.

With all of that said, films and shows that are being considered in different lights, mainly dramatic rather than comedic, have found their way into the comedy nominees, like they usually do, at The Golden Globes such as Joy, The Martian, The Big Short, and Orange Is the New Black. Certainly, Joy, The Martian, and The Big Short weren’t touting themselves as comedies in trailers and promotion and Orange Is the New Black has shifted to dramatic consideration with other awards. We’re not exactly sure why the distinction for comedy is so noticeably different with HFPA, but it does possibly allow for some notoriety for work that wouldn’t really get recognized otherwise.

So, here are the comedy nominees for this year’s Golden Globes.

30 Rock, Girls, Louie, Modern Family, Veep, Parks and Recreation, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon got Emmy nominations this morning as they have becoming seemingly perennial comedy awards frontrunners. Also, Between Two Ferns, Childrens’ Hospital, Burning Love, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, and Robot Chicken garnered nominations in a special series category.

We’re glad to see that Portlandia, Mel Brooks, Louis CK’s special, Adventure Time, and Bob’s Burgers got nominated for Emmys as well. In a perfect world, they’d all win we suppose.
