Pick of the Day: Late Late Breakfast (in LA) 8/29

August 22, 2022
News
bailey norton, brodie reed, Carly Kane, curtis cook, experimental comedy, jake noll, Jane Harrison, los angeles comedy, maggie maye, Molly Kearney, sammy mowrey, Shrimp Boys, tyler jackson, yard theater

Whether you need a complete distraction from the ever more hellish reality we live in or just a jolt of unfettered absurdity, there is nothing quite like Late Late Breakfast to serve those in plentiful supply to all of our heart’s content.

Late Late Breakfast was forged several years ago by Tyler Jackson and Danny Maupin as an alternative to any sort of traditional comedy show by challenging stand-up comedians to do their act while a randomly selected ridiculous task was assigned to them. That could be anything from embodying the seven deadly sins throughout their set to being interrupted by a karaoke chorus of Sweet Caroline from the audience. It’s controlled chaos, perhaps, in its finest form.

It has been quite some time since they’ve mounted an edition of Late Late Breakfast in LA, but the Yard Theater will be letting this bonkers show bring some life to next Monday night on Aug. 29th at 9PM. Having to run through a gauntlet of abject silliness will be a very, very fine collection of LA comedians including The Shrimp Boys, Curtis Cook, Molly Kearney, Maggie Maye, Brodie Reed, Bailey Norton, Jane Harrison, Jake Noll, and Carly Kane with Tyler Jackson and Sammy Mowrey presiding over all the tomfoolery.

Tickets are only $5 and you really ought to go get tickets and have a Monday night to remember here.

Pick of the Day: High Priestess Austin’s Safe Alliance Benefit 2/26

News

As Texas is coming out of its gruesome winter crisis that left millions without power to fend for themselves, there is more than plenty of fallout and aftermath to deal with on the road to recovery. So, in short, they’re going to need more aid.

That’s why the wondrous and magical comedy variety show, High Priestess, is doing a very special live-stream show in support of Austin’s Safe Alliance that is providing much needed resources to Texans in dire need right now (in addition to be an org in service of abuse survivors). Hosts/Priestesses Bri Pruett and Sara June have assembled some grand comics that have their hearts with Texas including Maggie Maye, Daniel Rugg Webb, Vanessa Gonzalez, and Madison Shepard. Stand-up, tarot, weed, and a damn good time for a great cause is all set for this edition of High Priestess on Fri. Feb. 26th at 6:30PM PT/9:30PM ET.

RSVP/support/donate here.

Pick of the Day: In The Green Room

Often, the green room of a live comedy show is one of the best places to be, especially if you want that fly on the wall experience of comedians that are off-stage, but still sharp whilst riffing with their contemporaries.

Being stuck in quarantine, the idea of gathering is still a bit away from happening (even with just comedians). Yet, you can still get a bit of the green room experience this weekly starting this Thursday 4/30 with the In The Green Room live-stream.

Set to hang back in that proverbial/virtual green room is many of Avail Comedy‘s very best including

Comedians Include*
Chris Fairbanks
Gareth Reynolds
Greg Barris
James Fritz
Maggie Maye
Matt McCarthy
Megan Koester
Nick Flanagan
Paul Danke
Phoebe Bottoms
Ramin Nazer
Ryan Singer
Sara June

* based on quarantine availability

Rather than having the news on all day, it’d be much, much better to just hang with comedians hanging with other comedians. Tune in at youtube.com/availcomedy at 8PM PT/11PM

Pick of the Day: Late Late Breakfast Tries the Internet 4/18

One of the most bonkers comedy shows around, Late Late Breakfast, is going live on a live-stream! For the uninitiated, Late Late Breakfast issued random challenges and games for comedians to do while trying to do their act including having to make as many burgers as possible, fighting with paper airplanes, having to do a plethora of impressions, and more. Personally, we’re excited to see how they will pull off their crazy format via Zoom/Twitch.

As always, Tyler Jackson and Danny Maupin will preside as hosts of the controlled chaos and they’ve wrangled quite the line-up from around the country including:

Shane Torres
Maggie Maye
Casey James Salengo
Chloe Radcliffe
Ian Aber
Dante Powell
Sean Smith
AND MORE!!

Tune in and witness the madcap delights of Late Late Breakfast on Sat. Apr. 18th at 1PM PT/4PM ET at Holdthephone.tv

The somewhat controlled chaos of Late Late Breakfast is finally back with more hysterical, insane challenges for LA favorites in stand-up to attempt while doing their sets.

Hosts Tyler Jackson and Danny Maupin will be at Lyric Hyperion in Silverlake this time around on Sat. Jul. 20th at 4PM. Tickets are only $5 for what is truly a beautifully bonkers experience.

Reparations for Slavery Haven’t Happened, But Maybe You Can Support a Comedy Short “16,000 Dollars” About What Reparations Might Actually Look Like

June 20, 2019
Uncategorized
brodie reed, david gborie, ellington wells, francesca fiorentini, jermaine fowler, maggie maye, symone baptiste

As Juneteenth today marks the end of slavery in the U.S. (with its specific end in Texas), it’s as good of a time as ever to highlight the issue of reparations.

Specifically, you can help crowdfund a short film featuring many of LA comedy’s best (Brodie Reed, David Gborie, Maggie Maye, Jermaine Fowler, Francesca Fiorentini, Ellington Wells, Symone Baptiste) imagining a comedic reality where reparations for slavery actually happened in the present day.

Many politicians still, to this day, have trouble talking about reparations, so who knows what will it actually happening. At the very least, you can back this film 16,000 Dollars that will probably further the conversation as well as offer a chance for a really stellar cast and crew to shine.

Find out more about 16,000 Dollars and back it here.

Called Thrash, it’s FREE and has a pretty bangin’ inaugural line-up as you can see above.

The absurdist way that Jamie Loftus explores her innermost anxieties and fears and presents them on stage, in videos, in animation, in articles, and, just from this past weekend, a Comedy Central digital series succinctly named Irrational Fears.

Jamie really goes to town with what that means and we love it. Watch the series here.

One of the best and most unique storytelling shows around is coming around again.

We Still Like You features stories from funny people where they are definitely not the hero. There’s live illustration and, at the end, the audience gets to cathartically exclaim “WE STILL LIKE YOU!” Also, it’s in the intimate setting of someone’s house.

It’s happening this Saturday with a fun line-up of recent LA transplant comedians. Doors are at 9:30PM and you can get more details here.

Judge Aaron Persky is the judge who infamously handled the Brock Turner rape case.

This show, happening tomorrow at El Cid in Silverlake, is an awesome comedy benefit to raise funds to get him on the ballot in order to get him recalled (as opposed to him just getting running opposed for several more years).

Along with a great show featuring the comedy stylings of Ever Mainard, Maggie Maye, Janine Brito, Mara Wilson, and more, there will be a raffle prizes and F*ck Rape Culture merch.

You can get (and should) get your tickets here.
