Pick of the Day: Skin Contact (in LA) 8/9

July 28, 2023
News
bar covell, los angeles comedy, los feliz, rachel pegram, stand up comedy

LA is getting another weekly comedy show that’s going to make Wednesday nights even more of a comedy festival than it already is. In addition to the several great, affordable/free shows that make hump day a night to go out and catch many of LA’s comedy best, Skin Contact will take over the very chic, speakeasy style space in Bar Covell in Los Feliz.

The hysterical Rachel Pegram is leading the charge with this brand new Eastside show and already has three weeks on the books (Aug. 9th-Aug. 23rd). If folks are into Skin Contact enough through those three dates, expect to see Pegram keep it going and that will be part of your LA comedy regimen every week.

The inaugural Skin Contact will feature Carmen Christopher, Brian Bahe, Taylor Ortega, Ellory Smith, and Dani Lyle. Also, tickets are set at the nice price of only $5. Go get them now right here.

Pick of the Day: Set Sail with Ruben Östlund: An American Cinematheque Retrospective (in LA) 1/8

News
american cinematheque, force majeure, los angeles comedy, los feliz, ruben ostlund, the square, triangle of sadness

We’ve sung the praises of internationally renowned auteur Ruben Östlund plenty of times here at The Comedy Bureau. He is one a handful of directors that really extoll high artistry in the realm of comedy on film. The trio of works, Force Majeure, The Square, and Östlund’s latest, Triangle of Sadness simultaneously are some of the funniest movies we’ve seen on this side of the millennium and profoundly moving and prodding works of cultural dissection.

Of course, it just stands to reason that Ruben ought to get his own retrospective at American Cinematheque. On Sun. Jan. 8th, The Los Feliz 3 will host such a thing with Ruben Östlund himself, in person, introducing each screening. A run of four films will include Luis Buñuel’s Viridiana at 1PM, then The Square at 3:15PM, an American Cinematheque members only screening of Triangle of Sadness (w/Q&A featuring Dolly de Leon and Bill Hader) at 6:30PM, and Force Majeure at 10PM.

Tickets for non-members are $15 per screening, but it all seems worth it in our opinion (fingers crossed that you’ve finished all your holiday shopping already).

The backroom of the Blue Rooster Art Supplies was poised to be the heir apparent to Nerdmelt @ Meltdown. Alas, such a fate was not to come to pass as construction and expansion will prohibit the space from being a live venue.

Thus, Faded, On Deck, live tapings of All Fantasy Everything, and more will be moving on to a new home in the Mid City Arts Center next month.

However, before they go, they’re throwing a big farewell this Saturday in the form of an all female comedy marathon featuring 30 of LA’s best female comedians telling one joke. Signature Drink, another Blue Rooster show alum, and its hosts Courtney Karwal and Megan Gailey will be presiding over what should be quite the swan song.

Seriously, this would be a show that you shouldn’t miss without the whole prospect of a venue closing. As this is a living wake of sorts, it’s even more imperative that you enjoy yourself at a damn fine stand-up show.

Best get your tickets here quick.

After breezy summer hiatus, Faded, one of LA’s premier backroom comedy shows, will be returning back to its weekly status this Friday with your lovely Faded crew of Mike Mulloy, Sean Jordan, David Gborie, Zak Toscani, Jamel Johnson, and Bri Pruett over at Blue Rooster Art Supplies.

As always, the line-up is secret (but it’s always good) and tickets are $10. Go get your tickets and get back into the groove of Faded here.

Truly, it only seems like a little while ago that a super cool variety show called The Super Serious Show started up in a super cool photo studio and provided a stellar variety showcase of stand-up, short film, characters, music, and more.

Yet, almost 9 years later, The Super Serious Show, now at the also super cool Virgil, continues to stand as that same stellar, very diverse, carefully handpicked comedy variety showcase we really love.

For their 9 year mark, they’re really bringing the goods as you can see in the 9 year anniversary line-up above. Don’t miss out on helping them celebrating 9 years and seeing a great, great comedy show.

You’re going to want to get your tickets ASAP ($7 in adv., $10 at door-cash only). Do so here.

If you both desire the superiority that comes with being a member of a book club AND also don’t want to really put in the work to actually be in a book club AND want to see a great comedy show with LA comedy’s best and brightest doing the work of a book club for you, then Drew Spears’ Cook Blub might just be for you.

For this debut at Blue Rooster Art Supplies, fantastic line-up will be breaking down Chris Kattan’s SNL memoir “Baby Don’t Hurt Me: Stories and Scars from Saturday Night Live” (you’re free to read the book or not by the way).

Also, you’ll get to be part of a book club that meets in the back of an art supplies store, so you definitely will feel intellectually superior after attending.

The backroom of Blue Rooster Art Supplies in Los Feliz is quickly becoming a new place to be as their shows Faded, On Deck, (and an already sold out All Fantasy Everything taping) have done quite well for themselves.

Now, they’re adding a new monthly stand-up show Signature Drink to their roster with two great hosts in Courtney Karwal and Megan Gailey. Also, per the name of the show, there will be a “specialty cocktail” for the evening.

The inaugural Signature Drink will be happening this Saturday at 8PM (Doors 7:30PM) and you can enjoy all of this for the nice price of $10. Get tickets here.

Anyways, tickets are going from $10-$30 (plus a 2-item min.) and you can get your tickets here.

Given the penchant for reboots, revivals, etc. these days, we’re cautious to announce any sort of “swan song”.

That being said, one of our favorite improv teams, Boss Jr. (Matt Rath, Naomi Villa, and Jake Dunnington) will be having their final show at The Clubhouse in Los Feliz next Wednesday, September 5th around 8:15PM.

Truly, we’ve enjoyed the trio get weird, go deep, and still keep an air of silliness abound and the teams that they’ve booked over the years on their nice and tight improv showcase.

So, join them for what will be (at least for the time being) one last go.

For years, the LA Indie Improv Festival has highlighted the diamonds in the rough that comprise indie improv within LA’s massive comedy scene.

This upcoming weekend (Saturday, Aug. 18th & Sunday Aug. 19th), the 7th (and final) LA Indie Improv Festival will commence at The Clubhouse in Los Feliz and Lyr featuring the likes of such improv luminaries as Heather Anne Campbell, Monika Smith, Rococo, Sassy Bluff, Drew DiFonzo Marks, Private Street, South Asian AF Superteam, and oh so much more.

Oh yeah, they’ll even have improv on a party bus going between venues.

One last thing: admission to all of those is FREE, by the way.
