Pick of the Day: The Green Room with Paul Provenza (Nowhere Comedy Live-stream) 7/23

July 11, 2022
News

It has been far too long since The Green Room with Paul Provenza has been on the air. A groundbreaking series on Showtime that showed comedy panel shows can work in America so long as it’s more of an open, unstructured conversation not unlike that between comedians in a typical comedy club green room.

Thankfully, Paul Provenza (director of The Aristocrats, author of ¡SATIRISTAS!, producer of Set List: Standup Without A Net) has transformed his backyard into the perfect place to have a live version of The Green Room (and has brought us at The Comedy Bureau on board) to bring back those one-of-a-kind conversations between all sorts of great comedians from all backgrounds, generations, and ideologies, etc. You’ll be able to watch this particular version of The Green Room with Paul Provenza virtually via Nowhere Comedy, as it will eb done in front of a live audience in Paul’s own charming compound.

Going live on Sat. Jul. 23rd at 7:30PM PT/10:30PM ET with Christina Catherine Martinez, Kira Soltanovich, Jamie Kilstein, and Ben Gleib, as well as, of course, Paul Provenza, there will be stand-up and then the signature panel conversation between all the comics. Tickets are $10 right now, but you can snag VIP tickets where you can ask the panel a question for $30. Go get them here and revel in and enjoy the return of the one and only Green Room.

Pick of the Day: Stand Ups For Ukraine! (in LA) 6/5

News
Andrey Belikov, atsuko okatsuka, Carol Leifer, charity benefit, chris porter, craig robinson, Dan Kinno, kira soltanovich, los angeles comedy, nova ukraine, todd glass, ukraine, ukraine war, zainab johnson

Over 3 months ago, an unprovoked, yet hostile Russia invaded the sovereign nation of Ukraine and have subjected the people of Ukraine to an untold amount of death, destruction, and senseless havoc. Ukrainians have valiantly stood their ground and defied any initial expectations of Russia steamrolling through their country.

That said, Putin is still pushing on with his efforts and, thusly, Ukraine needs all the aid that it can get in any way that it can. That’s why you can and should support Nova Ukraine, an org providing emergency humanitarian aid and relief to those in need in Ukraine’s borders, by going to the Hollywood Improv this Sunday, Jun. 5th at 7PM PT for Stand Ups for Ukraine.

All proceeds from the show will be going to Nova Ukraine on top of the fact that you’ll get to see a superb LA comedy line-up in Craig Robinson, Kira Soltanovich, Atsuko Okatsuka, Chris Porter, Todd Glass, Zainab Johnson, Carol Leifer, Dan Kinno, Andrey Belikov.

Tickets are $25 (plus 2 item min.) and you can (and should) get tickets here.

Pick of the Day: Tribute: An Evening of Barbara Streisand Songs Sung By Comedians (in LA) 11/12

October 28, 2021
News

Though Barbara Streisand is probably known by many these days as a touchstone American singer, Streisand had many of her first breakthroughs in comedy films including the hysterical What’s Up, Doc?

So, perhaps, the idea of a tribute to the songs of Barbara Streisand by comedians isn’t so farfetched?

Tribute is going to dive in head first with that notion as Danny Jolles, Kira Soltanovich, Eric Hahn, Chase Bernstein, and Jamie Pierce will be singing the songs of Barbara Streisand (and, we’re pretty sure, have something to say both about Barbara and the idea of earnestly(?) singing Barbara songs at a comedy club). The show itself will be a monthly honoring, brought to you by Eric Hahn, of recording artist legends, FYI.

Maybe this will kick off a trend of Barbara songs being sung at karaoke across LA?

In any case, this Streisand edition of Tribute is set for Fri. Nov. 12th at 7:30PM PT at The Hollywood Improv Lab on Melrose. Tickets are $12 and you can (and should) go get them here.

UnCabaret with Beth Lapides, the legendary comedy/storytelling/music variety show, has been around for over a quarter of a century and it has no intention of stopping or slowing down even if it has change things up a little bit for the time being.

While we’re all observing our “safer at home” order here in LA, we all can’t take a seat in the gorgeous Rockwell Table & Stage, but UnCabaret, Beth, and UnCabaret music director Mitch Kaplan will be pushing forward with their show via the more popular than ever video conferencing platform Zoom and feature a, per usual, wonderful, wonderful line-up including Julia Sweeney, Alec Mapa, Alex Edelman, Kira Soltanovich, Kate Willett, and Jamie Bridgers.

UnCabaret Zoom Edition is happening this Sun., Apr. 12th at 7:30PM PT/10:30PM ET. Get more details/register for a free ticket here.

The show is indeed free, but donations will be gladly accepted and split between artists. Venmo @BethLapides or PayPal Beth@uncabaret.com.

Other than trying to watch Maria’s social media feeds to see if you can watch her workshop her new hour over coffee with her or during her runs at The Clubhouse, you can watch her along with a great line-up of stand-ups and support the Freedom for Immigrants charity on August. 27th at Highland Park’s Hi Hat (5043 York Blvd., Los Angeles, CA).

As far as we can see, you need to go to this if you can. Tickets are $40 (21+ only) and you can (and very much should) get them here. Don’t be surprised if they sell out.

It’s been awhile, but Set List: Improvised Stand-Up is doing their next proper show next week at Hollywood’s Sycamore Tavern.

Whether you’ve never seen it or not, you should go check out watch how esteemed comedians’ brains work while joking about an abstract, never-before-seen topic. Set List started here in LA, but has, over the years, toured nearly every comedy festival as well as been adapted into a TV show overseas.

Creator Troy Conrad gathered a heck of a line-up for this one too.
