Pick of the Day: Jes Tom + Tessa Skara Present Corporate Pride: A Comedy Show (in NYC) 6/26

June 17, 2022
News
bell house, brooklyn, corporate pride, emily dayton evans, gara lonning, hannah einbinder, jes tom, jess henderson, nyc comedy, pride month, sabrina wu, Spike Einbinder, tessa skara

For the purposes of both profit and avoiding the projected fear of being canceled, corporations across every stock exchange have gone all in on showing their investment into queer inclusivity by redoing their logos, pumping out loads of rainbow emblazoned merchandise, and, above all, making sure that their social media accounts are showing LGBTQ+ support.

Often, it becomes more about them than actually celebrating Pride itself, which is why two of NYC’s leading queer comedians, Jes Tom and Tess Skara, are presenting a “Brand Affiliated* (*not actually affiliated with any Brands)” comedy and drag show at The Bell House on Sun. Jun. 26th at 7:30PM PT.

Showing their corporate pride for PRIDE will be more stellar LGBTQ+ comedians including:

  • Hannah Einbinder
  • Spike Einbinder
  • Jess Henderson
  • Sabrina Wu
  • Gara Lonning
  • Emily Dayton Evans

Tickets are $15 and make sure you’re doing your part for Corporate Pride™ by buying them right here.

June is, as you should know, Pride, and, as such, you’ll be seeing a pretty fair share of queer comedians on plenty of networks and streaming platforms. Many of those comedians you should be watching, falling in love with, and following whatever they’re doing no matter the time of year.

One of those comics is Jes Tom. Jes is one of the most whipsmart comedians on any stage today with a wealth of sharp observations and stories about gender and sex that are both forward thinking and yet so damn funny. Just see for yourself in their latest set on Comedy Central’s digital stand-up series, Featuring, here.

Then, as we said earlier, follow everything they do @jesthekid on IG.

Pick of the Day: In Stitches: A Comedy Fundraiser for The Brooklyn Free Clinic (in NYC) 5/21

News

If you’ve read the news in any of the time that, frankly, you’ve been alive, you probably felt lost, beset with how much hurt and violence there is in the world. Just this past weekend, there was so much gun violence across the country that it’s hard to parse how many people got shot up where in America and when exactly that happened.

That said, there are still good folks in the world putting care and concern out for other people. Some of the people work at the Brooklyn Free Clinic, a student run free clinic that boosts health care access through the borough via “service and education” by way of SUNY Downstate Medical Center.

In Stitches is a big time fundraiser to be held at Brooklyn’s venerable comedy venue, The Bell House, on Sat. May 21st at 2:30PM ET (w/ 1:30PM ET cocktail hour/silent auction) that seeks to support their truly selfless efforts and the good roots they plant in and throughout their borough. NYC comedy finest in Mary Beth Barone, Brittany Carney, Rachel Coster, Jes Tom, Ike Ufomadu, Garrett Williams, Jo Firestone & Aparna Nancherla, and host Jared Waters will be assemble for this edition of In Stitches.

Admission for In Stitches starts at $15 for students, $20 for GA, then goes up from there if you want to support the Brooklyn Free Clinic even more (and gets some great swag while you’re at it).

Get tickets, more details, etc. here.

Pick of the Day: Looking Foward To It with Josh Gondelman (in NYC) 7/17

June 30, 2021
News
jes tom, josh gondelman, larry owens, looking forward to it, Negin Farsad

Throughout the pandemic, Looking Forward To It and its host Josh Gondelman have faithfully served up virtual comedy shows specifically in support of voter engagement beyond the 2020 election (which is over despite what QAnon folks might think). Just on their virtual run, they’ve raised over $50K.

Now, with America opening up, Gondelman will get the chance do the very first Looking Forward To It in person at Brooklyn’s beloved littlefield with a, per usual, amazing line-up. This edition will be supporting Field Team 6 and feature the comedy stylings of Jes Tom, Negin Farsad, Larry Owens, a video from Dan Fox, and hip-hop improv from North Coast.

This very first in-person Looking Forward To It is set for Sat. Jul. 17th at 8PM ET and tickets are $15 GA and $40 VIP. Go get ’em here.

Pick of the Day: The Good Good Laugh Show (Benefitting #STOPAAPIHATE) 4/29

April 26, 2021
News
atsuko okatsuka, garron chiu, jes tom, julia shiplett, miss shu mai, stand up comedy, stop aapi hate, teresa lee

Sure, there’s an anti-Asian hate crimes bill making its way through Congress and two Asian women won Oscars last night, but that still doesn’t mean the fight against anti-Asian hate crimes is over. There was such an alarming rise of those hate crimes that are very well documented at this point that turning the tide is going to be a long and daunting fight.

So, supporting orgs like #STOPAAPIHATE are crucial to making long, lasting sustainable change and thus enjoying comedy shows benefitting such orgs is a great way to do just that. That’s part of why you should check out The Good Good Laugh Show live-stream that’s raising money for #STOPAAPIHATE this Thurs. Apr. 29th at 7PM PT/10PM ET.

The other part of why you shouldn’t miss out here is that it has a fantastic line-up of Asian and Pacific Islander comedy and drag acts including:

ATSUKO OKATSUKA
GARRON CHIU
JES TOM
JULIA SHIPLETT
MISS SHU MAI
& host Teresa Lee!

Get your tickets for $15 for The Good Good Laugh Show right here.

Pick of the Day: Bling Empire: A Live Reading Fundraiser 2/24

February 15, 2021
News
bling empire, bowen yang, chinatown, chinatown love, fumi abe, irene tu, jes tom, joel kim booster, julia shiplett, kiko soiree, nori reed, peter kim, sherry cola, Tien Tran

Comedians doing a live read for a reality show is already a good enough sell as is.

Having a line-up of Bowen Yang, Joel Kim Booster, Nori Reed, Jared Goldstein, Sherry Cola, Julia Shiplett, Tien Tran, and more do a live-read of a specific episode of Bling Empire is even better.

Doing that all for the sake of directly supporting Asian communities (at a time that Asian communities direly need backing from everyone due to an upward trend in hate crimes against Asians) in both LA and NYC shouldn’t even be the reason that you’d go in for this live-reading, but if that’s it, then so be it.

Thus, you should get tickets via a $10 suggested donation to the upcoming Bling Empire: A Live Reading Fundraiser on Wed. Feb. 24th at 6PM PT/9PM ET that’s raising money for Chinatown Community for Equitable Development (LA) and Send Chinatown Love (NYC).  You can and should get more details/donate/tickets/live-stream access here.

Pick of the Day: Dynasty Confidential for KTown For All 2/2

January 22, 2021
News
dynasty typewriter, jes tom, joel kim booster, josh sharp, ktown for all, megan gailey, mitra jouhari, Sydnee Washington

Now that 2021 has REALLY begun, transparency is going to be crucial if we are to actually “form a more perfect union”. In other words, let’s not keep so many secrets.

That makes Dynasty Confidential with Joel Kim Booster a perfect show for this time as Joel will virtually assemble some of comedy’s best to divulge their secrets, and then do with them as he pleases. Also, you’ll get to bear witness to whole the thing for what is a hilarious evening of revelations.

This particular edition of Dynasty Confidential will go to benefit the amazing org Ktown For All that advocates for the unhoused population in and around LA.

So, plan for Tues. Feb. 2nd at 6PM PT/9PM ET to live-stream Dynasty Confidential after you go get your tickets here.

Pick of the Day: Safe Housing 4 Nori Reed 9/5

August 27, 2020
News
benefit show, jes tom, Jessica Henderson, Joe Castle Baker, kate berlant, lgbtq, Meg Stalter, naomi ekperigin, nori reed, patti harrison, safe housing, sarah squirm, Spike Einbinder, trans lives matter

Nori Reed is a great comedian that blessed LA with her presence in moving down from SF not too long ago. She is also a trans woman who, tragically, is in need of safe housing due to being forced out earlier this month by a bigot she was living with.

So, there is a big benefit live-stream comedy show next month that aims to raise enough money to help her live and thrive in a space that she deserves. Safe Housing 4 Nori Reed will take place on Sat. Sept. 5th at 8PM PT/11PM ET and feature a terrifically stacked line-up of Kate Berlant, Patti Harrison, Naomi Ekperigin, Meg Stalter, Spike Einbinder, Sarah Squirm, Joe Castle Baker, Jes Tom, Jessica Henderson, and more TBA.

You can get more details on the show and where to donate here and in the flyer below.

Pick of the Day: Comedy for Navajo & Hopi COVID Relief 5/17

May 15, 2020
News
benefit event, brian bahe, comedy show, dan licata, hopi, jes tom, jo firestone, larry owens, navajo, sarah squirm

Though vastly underreported, one of the hardest hit groups by the COVID-19 in America is Native Americans. For many tribes, their reservations are vastly underserved and lacked many essential resources and services without threat of a pandemic including running water, access to medical services, and even a scarcity of grocery stores.

Of the many, many causes you can support, this might be a good one to give your money to. And, as luck we have it, you can specifically support COVID-19 relief for the Navajo Nation and Hopi Reservation via joining in for a splendid evening of live-streamed, innovative comedy.

This Comedy for Navajo & Hopi COVID Relief features some of most dynamic comedians around such as Larry Owens, Jo Firestone, Sarah Squirm, Dan Licata, Jes Tom, and host/event organizer Brian Bahe. A line-up like this will give you a night you will never forget as there’s no real telling what they’ll do, but, whatever it may be, it’s going to be like nothing you’ve seen before.

So, please support the Navajo and Hopi and enjoy what should be one hell of a comedy show for this benefit on Sunday at 5PM PT/8PM ET. Tickets are $10-$30. Please go get them here.
