Hacks Season 2 Trailer Looks to Up the Ante

April 26, 2022

The first season of Hacks from Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky brought us all, for our money, the best depiction of stand-up in any sort of scripted TV or movie. It also really sunk its teeth into how the goal posts keep moving for women in entertainment, specifically in comedy and how class and privilege underhandedly weave themselves into the tapestry. Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder capture all of these dynamics in their dazzling pairing and made us want season 2 as soon as we finishing speeding through season 1.

Thank goodness that the second season of the instant critical and fan darling is coming very, very soon on Thurs. May 12th on HBO Max and we’ll get to see what famed comedian Deborah Vance (a fictionalized version of many comedians, but very much drawing from comedy legend Joan Rivers) working on a whole new hour on the road while also making a creative pivot to more personal material. As we said in the headline, the trailer for season 2 seems to up the ante from season 1 and it might be even wilder (especially if Megan Stalter gets more screen time).

See for yourself with the season 2 trailer for Hacks here.

Get Your First Look at Season 2 of Hacks (Teaser)

Hacks, the latest freshman single cam comedy to be critically acclaimed and award winning out of the gate (Atlanta and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend being the others in recent memory) has been such a lauded show that it, like those others freshman phenoms, feels like it has been around a lot longer than it actually has.

Well, that’s kind of what happens when a show is that good out of the gate. Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, Jen Statsky, Jean Smart, and Hannah Einbinder all make for one of the best explorations of stand-up comedy and fighting your way through the entertainment biz as a woman, no matter where you are in age or station, and the second season has been highly anticipated since the credits rolled for season 1.

Lucky for us all, season 2 is kicking off very soon, Thurs. May 12th to be exact, on HBO Max. You can take your very first look at all the fights and cool looks of mutual respect between Ava and Deborah and everything in between here (as this season will follow them out of Vegas and on the road).

Hacks Is Getting a Second Season at HBO Max

As Hacks get towards the end of its first season, it really has proven itself as one of the best explorations of stand-up comedy in all of TV and film. The intergenerational dynamic between fictitious comedy legend Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and her new writer Ava (Hannah Einbinder) captures so much about being a comedian both in decades past and the current moment as well how it has gotten better/hasn’t changed at all for comedians that are women. Also, Smart and Einbinder’s pairing is one of the more compelling relationships we’ve seen on a screen this year.

Thus, HBO Max has smartly given Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello, and Jen Statsky a second season, which, hopefully will get under way soon and won’t be held up by being in the thick of a pandemic.

If you haven’t given Hacks a shot yet, please get into it as it really is, again, one of the best representations of stand-up ever outside of the real life version of it and is currently one of the best shows on television.

This is not a joke. The queens of comedy are returning for Season 2 of Hacks! #HacksOnHBOMax pic.twitter.com/zb3vsL1WDf

Watch Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder Square Off/Come Together as a Comedy Legend and Up and Comer in “Hacks” Trailer

While the premise of distant generations of comedy coming together as a sitcom has been tried before with the likes of The Comedians (Billy Crystal and Josh Gad), Late Night (Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling) and the ill-fated Mulaney (Martin Short and John Mulaney, the latest attempt at it seems like it may succeed where these others have perhaps come up short.

Hacks, from the minds of Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky, brings together pioneering comedian and “Queen of Vegas” Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and a feisty, whipsmart up-and-comer Ava (Hannah Einbinder) who is tasked with writing jokes for her and making her relevant. The trailer, which just got posted today, promises something very biting and, especially if you just watched Hysterical on FX or Hulu, rings true to women’s journey in trying to make it in comedy both in yesteryear and right at this very moment. Also, we have a sneaking suspicion that Smart and Einbinder have hilariously fiery chemistry, which ought to make Hacks the latest thing to binge watch.

See for yourself here, then look for Hacks on HBO Max, starting May 13th.

Well, instead of looking up all the details, we’d rather watch this “dramatization” by Funny or Die that’s pretty close what we imagined to what happened.
