Pick of the Day: American Cinematheque: A Virtual Conversation with Sacha Baron Cohen and Eric Idle 2/17

February 5, 2021
News
american cinematheque, eric idle, in conversation, interview, sacha baron cohen

When it comes to character comedy, Sacha Baron Cohen stands tall, both literally and figuratively, above so many others for his daring and commitment as Borat and Ali G in service of comedy and satire. Eric Idle remains a living legend as part of one of the most lauded comedy troupes of all time, Monty Python.

You’d very likely pay good money to see either of them do a Q&A, virtually or in-person. Lucky for you, American Cinematheque is hosting a special virtual conversation between Cohen and Idle this month where the two will dive into their work. Truly, it ought to be illuminating to see both just as themselves talking shop.

This virtual conversation is set for Wed. Feb. 17th at 6PM PT/9PM ET. Tickets for livestream access are FREE, but be sure to RSVP here.

Pick of the Day: Armando Iannucci and Peter Fincham Have a Drink with the Idler

News
armando iannucci, in conversation, the idler

For over a score of years, The Idler has been a go to UK magazine and online education source. In these times of live-streamed everything, they’re having a series of roundtable discussions,  done remotely of course, with various luminaries from several different corners of expertise.

This particular edition of the Drink with The Idler is great interest to us because it features one of the great comedic minds of our time, Armando Iannucci. Iannucci created Veep, The Thick of It, and Avenue 5 and helmed such films as In The Loop and Death of Stalin. He also just happens to be one of the few people who has given a lecture on comedy to a national intelligence agency.

Iannucci will be the guest to the Idler’s Tom Hodgkinson and will be joined by producer Peter Fincham and writer/philosopher Mark Vernon and we’re thoroughly curious what the discussion will bring especially in regards to comedy and perhaps how Armando might touch upon it in future projects.

This edition of A Drink with the Idler is set for Thurs. May 21st 10AM PT. You can join the live-stream for free, so long as you RSVP here.

On one level, this will be a celebration of the career of venerable comedy writer Alan Zweibel (SNL, Letterman, Curb Your Enthusiasm) as captured in this memoir Laugh Lines: My Life Helping Funny People Be Funnier.

On another level, this very well could be a very fun, jaunty roast by Larry David of his friend, collaborator, and contemporary, which is more than worth the price of admission.

Either reason is more than enough to catch this particular edition of Live Talks Los Angeles featuring Alan Zweibel in conversation with Larry David about Laugh Lines on 4/20 (we’re sure Larry will have something to say about that) at the Writers Guild Theater.

Tickets start at $20 and are $43 if you want to buy the book as well (FYI, they don’t go on sale until Mar. 20th 10AM, but you ought to send a reminder as we’re sure this will sell out fast). Get more info, bookmark where to buy tickets, etc. here.

Though A.P. Bio has gotten the ax (for now), it still can strive to get some revenge on NBC by living well and snagging some awards in the upcoming awards season.

As this is the case, a conversation “with the cast and executive producers of A.P. Bio, including Mike O’Brien (Executive Producer), Patton Oswalt, Glenn Howerton, Lyric Lewis, Mary Sohn, Jean Villepique, and Paula Pell*.” ought to be pretty damn fascinating as well as a fun deep dive into what makes this show special (and why it should be saved).

Don’t miss out on exactly that at FYC at UCB @ UCB Sunset next week. Tickets are $12 and you can (and should) snag ‘em here.

Also, Ron Funches and Dan Mintz from Bob’s Burgers are just a few of their guests.

Jon Stewart Q&A For Premiere of “Rosewater” With Stephen Colbert Will Be Broadcast Into Theaters

Jon Stewart’s directorial debut Rosewater would be remiss without some sort of event attached to the movie’s premiere.

Luck would have that on Nov. 13th at 7:30PM EST (and tape delay for 7:30PM MT/CT/PST), Stewart will be chatting with his satirical news program cohort Stephen Colbert and it will be broadcast into theaters via Fathom Events.

While Rosewater isn’t at all a comedy, we’re sure that Stewart and Colbert in conversation will be a whole lot of fun, perhaps reminiscent of John Mulaney recently interviewing Dan Mintz.
