TCB Debriefing 11/21/23: Molly Ruben Long, Amy Poehler, Beverly Hills Cop 4, Unprisoned

November 21, 2023
News
amy poehler, axel foley, beverly hills cop, eddie murphy, molly ruben long, unprisoned

1. The hilarious Molly Ruben Long got diagnosed with breast cancer a week ago and then went ahead and hosted a comedy show in a NYC bookstore with these breast cancer jokes. Round of applause right now wherever you are for Molly. Please send her well wishes/support/good vibes/whatever you can.

2. Following parting ways with Upright Citizens Brigade as a brand, Amy Poehler is now taking her improv talents to Masterclass (for grown-ups not looking to be on SNL?) (Variety)

3. Take your first gander at the nostalgia machine marching on in the first image of Eddie Murphy reprising his iconic Beverly Hills Cop role as Axel Foley.

4. Critically acclaimed (and even with that, not talked about enough?) dramedy Unprisoned is getting another season (Deadline). Kerry Washington has the most fun she’s had in years in a role on top of a fascinating dissection of life post-incarceration.

5. We’ll leave you with this: If you must watch cis straight white men do stand-up, know that there are plenty that are great and aren’t even remotely controversial. Case in point, Joe Zimmerman with one of the best specials of the year.

Looks Like Eddie Murphy Is Finally Returning To Stand-up Comedy Next Year

Though that gigantic multi-million deal for a comedy special at Netflix has only been rumored, Eddie Murphy has made it official that he’s finally making his way back to stand-up next year.

That might mean he’ll be dropping in at spots around LA and NYC this year.

Murphy has been known to keep tabs on stand-up comedy throughout the years even though he hasn’t gone on stage to perform for so many years, save for his Mark Twain Prize acceptance in 2015. We were wondering when the itch to get back into it would finally get to Murphy, especially since people have begged for his return for so long.

What will be curious to see is Eddie come back into stand-up in 2019-2020 with a national election cycle in full swing and the idea of saying what you want in stand-up comedy being held to a higher standard than it once was.

Honestly, we have no idea what Murphy might do with this stand-up comeback as he has been gone so long, so we, like so many others, will probably be waiting at the edge of our seats for it.

Eddie Murphy Takes on the Story Behind Dolemite in “Dolemite Is My Name”

Maybe, just maybe this is one of the beginning milestones of Eddie Murphy’s long, circuitous route back into stand-up comedy?

This biopic, Dolemite Is My Name (written by Scott Alexander & Larry Karaszewski and directed by Craig Brewer) that follows the career of comedian Rudy Ray Moore as his better known persona, blaxploitation star Dolemite seems very intriguing, especially with a supporting cast that boasts Keegan-Michael Key, Craig Robinson, Tituss Burgess, and Wesley Snipes.

If anything, it’s somewhat comforting to see Eddie back in the role of a comedian and he, in turn, seems pretty right at home as Rudy Ray Moore.

See all about this for yourself in the trailer, then look for the release of Dolemite Is My Name this Fall.

Just like the breezy rides that the series takes us through while Jerry Seinfeld and his guest hang out for the most successful version of comedians having coffee, we have coasted on to season 11 of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee (that’s 2 more than Seinfeld FYI).

Per usual, Jerry has stacked line-up of guests including Eddie Murphy, Melissa Villaseñor, and Martin Short and, as far as we can see, Jerry’s winning formula here will keep going as long as he wants.

See it for yourself in this season’s trailer here.

Looks Like Eddie Murphy Has One Hell of a Tracy Morgan Impression

Over the last couple of years, Eddie Murphy has publicly mulled over a return to stand-up, but would always add the caveat of not knowing exactly what he would do since comedy has changed so much since he last took the mic.

Yet, this dead-on impression of Tracy Morgan that he did during his recent appearance of Kimmel might be a good place to start.

9PM on PBS.

While Eddie Murphy has already received his actual Mark Twain Prize for Humor at the ceremony, the rest of us only know that he ribbed Bill Cosby during his acceptance speech.

We don’t know what Kevin Nealon Jay Pharoah, and more were up to during the ceremony, but it seems like they were there honoring Eddie in their own particular way.

We’ll definitely be curious to see if Eddie’s acceptance speech goes a little more into some bits/material/etc.

Also, Murphy said that he’ll eventually tell jokes again.

In this video from AP documenting the Mark Twain Prize for Humor ceremony at The Kennedy Center, Murphy actually cracked a joke about Bill Cosby who also happens to still have a Mark Twain Prize to his name (starts at 2:28).

Hopefully, this is the spark that gets the fire burning again for Eddie to return to stand-up.

Any takers on if he’ll do something funny on stage like every other Mark Twain Prize recipient has done when receiving the award?

For his storied career as a barrier breaking stand-up comedian, comedic actor years ago, Eddie Murphy will be the latest to receive the prestigious Mark Twain Prize for Humor from The Kennedy Center. He’ll be joining the ranks of Richard Pryor, Carl Reiner, Carol Burnett, Will Ferrell, George Carlin, and more this weekend.

We’ll be curious to see where Murphy will head next after receiving one of comedy’s top honors, especially seeing where he has gone after his Spike TV tribute or his very brief appearance after Chris Rock’s heartfelt speech about him at The SNL 40th Anniversary.

The channel will also feature countdowns and stories from the likes of current greats like Bill Burr, Bill Hader, Marc Maron, etc.

Eddie Murphy Will Be The Next Recipient of The Mark Twain Prize For Humor

Maybe this will be the thing that will have Eddie Murphy return to telling jokes on stage?

Following Richard Pryor, Jonathan Winters, Carl Reiner, Whoopi Goldberg, Bob Newhart, Lily Tomlin, Lorne Michaels, Steve Martin, Neil Simon, Billy Crystal, George Carlin, Bill Cosby, Tina Fey, Will Ferrell, Ellen DeGeneres, Carol Burnett, and Jay Leno, Eddie Murphy will be the latest to receive the prestigious Mark Twain Prize For Humor from The Kennedy Center.

With a tribute on Spike TV, some touching remarks from Chris Rock at the SNL 40th Anniversary, and now this Mark Twain Prize, we wonder if there is a ratio of tribute specials to live comedy appearances where he does a little more than say thank you.

As it stands now, acclaimed director Lee Daniels might actually pull off doing a Richard Pryor biopic with Mike Epps starring as Pryor, Kate Hudson playing Jennifer Pryor, and Eddie Murphy, who idolized Pryor, playing Pryor’s father, LeRoy Pryor.

Currently, Eddie is in talks to play the role, but we’re glad to see that Eddie might be involved. Keep your fingers crossed that this attempt, out of the many attempts over the last several years, at Pryor movie actually sees the big screen.

Eddie Murphy Returning as Axel Foley in New ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ in 2016

Paramount has set Mar. 2016 as the release date, for now, of a brand new Beverly Hills Cop movie. This will be the fourth movie in the franchise and will have spanned over 30 years.

Whatever your initial knee-jerk reaction to this news, we should be all glad that Eddie Murphy is, once again, playing Axel Foley.

Paramount and Eddie Murphy Setting to Bring Beverly Hills Cop Back to the Big Screen

While there was some interest about there being a Beverly Hills Cop TV show, there should be much more excitement that Eddie Murphy is setting to return as Axel Foley on the big screen.

If this actually gets made, this would be one of the few Eddie Murphy comedies over the last couple of decades that people won’t immediately be making fun of for years.
