With the conversation surrounding mental health being more prominent than ever in human history, one should wonder about how much they know about health and wellness (and not just what you’ve seen or heard of on Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop).

Lucky for us all, LA comedy’s Jenny Yang has created a self-help game show, Self Help Me, to test such niche knowledge and really dive into what’s really behind the latest trends in self-help (as well as create content through specialized anxieties). LA comedy scene favorites and wellness experts alike will face off and Yang is assembling quite the field of competitors including Nicole Byer, Joel Kim Booster, Ron Funches, Daniel Webb, Dr. Ally Powell-Hicks, and Desmond Chiam.

This round of Self Help Me is set for Sun. May 21st at 4PM @ Dynasty Typewriter. Tickets are $20 and you really ought to help yourself and go get them here.

Yet another touchstone LA comedy show returns on this side of the pandemic. Truly, we just had no idea who or what was going to survive when March 2020 came to pass. There was a point at which we, and so many others, legitimately thought that perhaps none of it would come back. We continue to thankful for the instances where some of our favorite things in comedy have survived and are making a big, big comeback.

One such thing is another one of the LA comedy scene’s longest running comedy shows, Blam! Blam! Blam!, the monthly institution at K-Town’s super cool R-Bar is making its first official show since lockdown happen right at the end of 2021. For years, we loved spending a late night on Tuesdays at 3331 W. 8th St. with Paul Danke at the helm and a beautiful mix, curated by DeMorge Brown, of stand-ups, characters, and the always mind-bending surprise from Davey Johnson.

This return of Blam! Blam! Blam! has all of its favorites including:

James Adomian
Lizzy Cooperman
James Fritz
Nana the Cat Lady
Kimberly Clark
Anna Seregina
Jamel Johnson
Daniel Webb
Tom Waits

Don’t miss out this Tues. Dec. 14th. Get there at 9PM PT if you want street parking to be slightly less difficult.

Pick of the Day: Hags with Steph Tolev and Daniel Webb (in LA) 12/2

One of the most fun, raucous stand-up shows we’ve ever been to didn’t necessarily have any bells or whistles or some sort daring stunt required by the comedians on the bill. It just happen to have Steph Tolev and Daniel Webb.  Those two co-hosting is such an uproarious good time in of itself as they, individually, are a hoot and a half. Go down a YouTube rabbit hole for Steph and Daniel if you don’t believe us. We dare you.

They were just getting into a rhythm with their show Hags before lockdown over at the Virgil. Now, they’re returning with their first post-lockdown in-person show and we’re so thankful that this upcoming edition of Hags is just on the horizon, coming next week, Thurs. Dec. 2nd at 8PM, at the beloved Venice watering hole, Townhouse. Also, they’ve put together quite the line-up with Nicole Byer, Cristela Alonzo, and Mary Lynn Rajskub.

Tickets are only $10 and you really ought to snag them up quick. This is one of the best line-ups next week in LA, FYI.

Pick of the Day: The Frogtown Show 6/12

Way before the pandemic was even a shadow of a worry of a thought, there was a magical outdoor venue in LA, Spoke Bicycle Cafe, that had a magical comedy show, The Frogtown Show.

It was a bi-weekly stand-up show that happened in the open spaces within this part-cafe-part-bar-part-bicycle-repair-shop-part-playground that is flanked by the more scenic parts of the LA River. They always got fantastic line-ups and this Jun. 12th edition is no different. The amazing trio of Jared Goldstein, Emily Maya Mills, and Erin Lennox will lead off Chris Garcia, Naomi Ekperigin, Danielle Perez, Daniel Webb, and Lindsay Ames.

In case you forgot, that’s some of LA comedy’s best and brightest.

Tickets are going for $10 per table (tables are for 2) and upwards with a 2 drink min. Go get them here before they sell out fast.

Please Enjoy This Latest, Vivacious Set from Daniel Webb

We’ve said plenty of things in praise of Daniel Webb here and elsewhere and we will continue to do so because he is such a sharp, quick-witted, subversive charmer.  Since he started making his way from Austin, TX to LA, we’ve always been taken with how undeniably fun his entire persona is and how dark and blue he can go while still maintaining his merry disposition.

As part of Comedy Central’s digital stand-up showcase series, the network caught this marvelous set from Daniel that we’d highly urge you to enjoy here (especially if you’re going to catch him live at the Tribeca Drive-In this weekend).

Not only are Daniel Webb, Jamel Johnson, and Logan Guntzelman three comics that make a damn fine line-up of stand-up comedy with their unique styles of charming rapid fire barbs, silly rants, and wry, dark observations respectively, they’re three comics that are about to tape their EPs.

Also, you’ve got to be sold with that flyer, right?

We highly recommend that you be in attendance to see them lay their comedic stylings down on digital wax at the Hollywood Improv at the end of the month. Tickets are $10/2 item min. Go get ‘em here.

Straw Men is, without a doubt, one of our new favorite shows of the year in how it puts many of the funniest people in LA to have the most absurd debates ever using the dumbest arguments and childish tactics possible.

While name-calling, the title-inspiring “straw man”, tangential insults, etc. are not at all productive in real debates between politicians that steer the course of policy at any level, it’s pretty damn fun to watch comedians do it in a theater.

So, go get your tickets for the next Straw Men, happening next week!

The aforementioned Kelsey Caine, Daniel Webb, Maggie Maye, and Martin Urbano make up for one hell of a line-up of comedians that, honestly, should already be known in every corner of this country.

They’ll be playing Chicago’s Hideout Inn on Feb. 18th and Dynasty Typewriter here in LA on March 8th. Please follow Kelsey, Daniel, Maggie, and Martin for more dates and details.
