FX Will Keep Their Comedy Programming High Brow with Debut Comedy Specials from Kate Berlant and Byron Bowers

September 13, 2022
News
byron bowers, comedy specials, fx, kate berlant

From just Atlanta, Better Things, What We Do In the Shadows, Baskets, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and, before Louis C.K. was found out to be the Louis C.K. we know now, Louie, FX has one of the best track records in comedy of any network or streaming service. Their sole focus on high profile, high concept scripted comedies has earned them endless acclaim and plenty of rewards to boot.

Intriguingly, they haven’t really dipped into stand-up or comedy specials, well, at all. They did put out the documentary Hysterical, which covered a myriad of women pushing their way forward in stand-up comedy, but it’s only now that they’ve played some big cards for comedy specials, keeping in line with their highly touted comedy brand.

Both Kate Berlant and Byron Bowers, two highly respected comedians that have been deserving of an hour special for years now for all the trailblazing stand-up and acting they’ve racked up, are going to have their very first hour specials drop via FX. Kate’s special will be the hour solo show that you have been lucky enough to see in LA or NYC this year and will have been directed by comedy auteur Bo Burnham. Byron’s hour will very likely be a showcase of how exquisite he can weave together long form jokes/bits/stories along with his cavalier persona. From where the two and FX as a network stand, this feels like a similar precipice that Netflix was at when they entered into original comedy specials with Ali Wong, Jen Kirkman, and Tom Segura several years ago.

Thankfully, you won’t have to ponder about what any of these specials will be (and we won’t spend any more time pontificating on the possibilities) since they’ll both be premiering exclusively on Hulu just a couple days from now on Thurs. Sept. 15th.

HBO Max Announces Stand-Up Specials from Tracy Morgan, John Early, Rose Matafeo, and Ahir Shah

HBO Max Announces Stand-Up Specials from Tracy Morgan, John Early, Rose Matafeo, and Ahir Shah

Well, well, well.

As Netflix announced today that it beat out HBO to keep Ali Wong in the fold, HBO swings back with their own exclusive stand-up special offerings that will be coming to their streaming service HBO Max next year. It’s a pretty intriguing slate thus far that includes comedy superstar Tracy Morgan, comedy star on-the-rise John Early, New Zealand comedy star making-her-way-stateside Rose Matafeo, and up-and-coming political English comedy star Ahir Shah.

We were actually wondering what would happen to this sort of segment in stand-up comedy as Netflix is currently in the business of doling out hours for comedy’s biggest stars and then giving who they think are up-and-comers (but are somewhat established, certainly enough for an hour special) 30 min. or 15 min. specials. Our hunch was that Amazon and other streaming services/networks like HBO Max would fill in this niche and it is certainly coming to pass. Amazon’s already put out hours from Alice Wetterlund and I Mom So Hard and, from the looks of this announcement, HBO is getting in while the getting is good.

Nikki Glaser and Jenny Slate Announce Hour Specials “Bangin” and “Stage Fright” at Netflix

Amazon and HBO have been lighting it up in terms of announcing and releasing comedy specials over the last several weeks. However, Netflix, probably the current industry leader in releasing comedy specials has two that you really ought to look out for next month.

Nikki Glaser, the arguable reigning queen of the comedy roast, is doing her first Netflix hour special Bangin’ that drops Oct. 1st. See Nikki make the announcement for Bangin’ while in an airplane lavatory.

The wonderful Jenny Slate will also be releasing later in Oct. that will be called Stage Fright. Jenny says, “It’s part stand-up, part documentary about my family, my fears, my heart, and a lot of other things that will make you laugh. Directed by my @gillianrobespierre (the director of Jenny’s star turn Obvious Child). Here’s Jenny’s announcement for Stage Fright that just happens to feature livestock.

So, please mark down 10/1 and 10/22 (or the midnight before those days) and block out the appropriate hour to watch these specials ASAP.

Colin Quinn’s Red State Blue State Is Now Going from Off-Broadway Show to Comedy Special at CNN

Colin Quinn’s Red State Blue State Is Now Going from Off-Broadway Show to Comedy Special at CNN

Colin Quinn’s new hour has found a new home. It’s pretty much assumed that his solo shows will eventually become specials. It’s interesting that there is a move from Netflix (where his last special was) to CNN, but we’re going to guess that Colin is getting to do pretty much what he wants at either place.

Also, maybe this will stream for free on CNN.com for brief period of time as well? We’ll just have to wait and see.

With W. Kamau Bell and United Shades of America and this recent announcement of a new Colin Quinn special (specifically focused on the political divisiveness all around right now), it would seem the CNN is aiming for a niche in political comedy specifically.

Those 47 Comedy Specials From Around the World Just Dropped on Netflix

Though it has an overly generic name, Netflix’s international comedy event Comedians of the World is here. There are 47 new half hour comedy specials (mostly in English) for you to binge right now.

So far, we’ve only watched Nicole Byer’s and that’s a pretty great place to start. When we’re done with all of them, we’ll tell you which ones are worth catching.

Netflix’s 47-Comedy-Specials-From-Around-The-World Event “Comedians of the World” to Happen on New Year’s Day

Earlier this year, Netflix announced that they were going to do a simultaneous drop of over 30 comedy specials from comedians around the world.

Talk of when that would happen was vague, but, just yesterday, the streaming service giant announced that they’ve kicked up the number of specials to 47, will be doing it on New Year’s Day, probably when you have 48 spare hours of time to watch all of it, and are continuing their run on the most generic sounding name for their stand-up series by calling this “Comedians of the World” (the others being The Standups and The Comedy Lineup)

For the US, specials from Nicole Byer, Chris D’Elia, Neal Brennan, and Nick Swardson will be dropping. Here’s a peek of some of the other specials that are set to come on Jan. 1st, 2019.

So, like the globe being swallowed by the smiley face in this poster, prepare to be swallowed up by stand-up as soon as 2019 starts.

Comedy Central Announces Hour Specials for James Davis, Ron Funches, Roy Wood Jr., and Chris DiStefano, Then Amy Schumer Presents Specials for Nore Davis and Mia Jackson, and Half Hour Specials for David Gborie, Vanessa Gonzalez, Charles Gould, Joe Kwaczala, Will Miles, Sara Schaefer, Dulcé Sloan, Allen Strickland Williams, Tom Thakkar, and Jaboukie Young-White

They’ll soon also be doing an up and comers stand-up showcase series digitally called Comedy Central Stand-Up Featuring that has sets from Tom Thakkar, Petey DeAbreu, Dina Hashem, Natasha Vaynblat, Ian Lara, Clare O’Kane, Stavros Halkias, Hanna Dickinson, Joyelle Nicole Johnson, Yedoye Travis, Marie Faustin, Ryan Beck, Martin Urbano, and Chris Cotton already lined-up. A round in LA will soon follow.

A told that’s over 14 hours of stand-up announced coming over the next year from Comedy Central. In fact, the hour specials from Davis, Funches, Wood Jr., and DiStefano are coming all in January.

Props to everyone here. We have no doubt some gold will be coming through these specials and we can’t wait to see it.

Interestingly, all of these comedians have done specials. A few of them have even done entire hour comedy specials on television already and are now doing half-hour specials on Netflix.

As the streaming service giant wheels and deals in Seinfelds, Rocks, and Chappelles, it’s pretty clear that Netflix has reorganized the pecking order in who gets what when it comes to their comedy specials.

Rest assured, the talent is clearly stacked here with Aparna, Kinane, Feinstein, Morin, Yashere, and List and you ought to go to the tapings happening on Sunday, November 5th and Monday, November 6th at Globe Theater in DTLA (RSVP for free tickets here).

Both Joe Mande and Rory Scovel are two great comedians of this current golden age of comedy that are deserving of their upcoming Netflix comedy specials that arrive this month and next.

Also, we just love the juxtaposition of the titles of their specials and how much of a goofy range it covers.

Oh, in case it wasn’t clear, mark these dates down as Joe and Rory’s new hour will definitely be worth watching.

Colin Quinn, Reggie Watts, Michael Che, Dana Carvey, and More Are Getting Netflix Comedy Specials

Netflix has built up its comedy branding so well, especially when it comes to comedy specials, that they now almost deal exclusively in big names.

It’s great to see Quinn having one of his solo shows get turned into a special it’ll also be fascinating to see what Watts does with the freedom of a Netflix special given that his last hour was done live in Central Park.

You’ve got to wonder if any of the other big streaming services will try to keep up with Netflix’s comedy specials output.

It’s been a long time coming that Ali Wong has been gearing up for a special and the next special from the brilliant Bo Burnham will undoubtedly be a must-see.

Mark your calendars on the following Fridays:

May 6th-Ali Wong: Baby Cobra
June 3rd-Bo Burnham: Make Happy
July 1st-Jim Jefferies: Freedumb
September 23rd-Iliza Shlesinger: Confirmed Kills

You do have a Netflix account by now, right?

Of the things that Netflix has on its production slate, stand-up specials seem to be probably on the cheaper side of things and the sort of content that does well on the streaming service giant.

So, they’ve got another whole round of hour comedy specials coming this year that will be worth making a reminder wherever you make reminders including:

Demetri Martin: Live (At the Time)-Fri., Aug. 14
Anthony Jeselnik: Thoughts and Prayers-Fri., Oct.16
John Mulaney: The Comeback Kid-Fri., Nov. 13
Brent Morin-Tues., Dec. 1

So, if you don’t have Netflix, now would be a good time to get it, especially since Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp comes out this week.

Both the hilarious Jerrod Carmichael and Andy Peters are having tapings tomorrow night and you’d be remiss to not catch one or both of them (which you can pull off).

Jerrod Carmichael will taping his debut hour special at The Comedy Store at 8PM/10:30PM
Andy Peters will be taping his debut comedy album at The Virgil at 8PM

Please don’t miss any of this if you can make it out.

As Chill.com Is Done with Comedy Specials, Dec. 15th Will Be Last Day to Get Them

The news that Chill.com is done with producing comedy specials to distribute broke a few weeks ago, but there’s still time before they are completely finished with them.

This means that if you bought Maria Bamford’s Special Special Special, Ari Shaffir’s Passive Aggressive, or Tom Rhodes’ light sweet crude, then you have until Dec. 15th to download them (if you haven’t already for some reason).

We’re sure that these will pop elsewhere soon enough, but for now, you’ve been warned to claim them while you can.

Comedy Central Following Louis C.K. Model by Offering Specials Online for $5

Comedy Central is putting up stand-up specials from Anthony Jeselnik, John Mulaney, Pete Holmes, and more for only $5 online following the precedent that Louis CK has set with how he distributes his specials (this is more proof of why he’s deserving for winning a Webby Person of the Year Award).

This should be a nice treat for comedy nerds that need to round out their collections, but we wonder if this will attract casual comedy fans into more stand-up.
