Dave Ross & Ryan Singer’s Sketch Album “Three” Is Darkly Hysterical and Also Very NSFW

March 8, 2016
Uncategorized
comedy album, dark comedy, dave ross, ryan singer, sketch, three

Often, inspiration come in the 11th hour and at the spur of the moment. Such is the case with Three, a sketch album from Dave Ross and Ryan Singer recorded in four hours after they were having dinner one random night.

Oddly enough, the sketches contained therein pretty much cover all the bases of what you’re not supposed to talk about at the dinner table, mostly sex and religion. Also, they seemingly improvise in such a ridiculous way that wouldn’t be kosher at any table, save for the one for the sketch group that Ross is in, Women.

The outright, ultra-blue absurdity of Three toes the line between being cringeworthy and the sort of comedy that breaks your brain for how farcical it is.

If you’re into really dark comedy, you might really get into Three (just probably don’t play it loud at work as we mentioned in the headline).

Oh, did we mention it’s free to stream and download?

Wyatt Cenac’s Furry Dumb Fighter Out Now on AST Records

Wyatt Cenac has a follow-up to his Grammy nominated album Brooklyn out today. Off of A Special Thing Records, Furry Dumb Fighter is available right now on iTunes.

In this latest hour, which is just an album as opposed to an accompanying album to a special, Cenac gets looser while still maintaining his laid back persona juxtaposed with smart, cutting social commentary. In fact, Wyatt goes for an album-length running gag that nicely bookends great sections on race, class, gender inequality, etc. Cenac definitely has stepped up from Brooklyn and that got him nominated for a Grammy.

Here’s a preview of it if you’re not already enticed.

Get Dwayne Kennedy’s Debut Album “Oh No, It’s Dwayne Kennedy!”

Honestly, we have a hard time believing this is Dwayne Kennedy’s debut album as he has been so funny for such a long time. In any case, we’re glad that he has an album now, “Oh No, It’s Dwayne Kennedy”.

There is a certain great, classic feel to Dwayne’s stand-up, yet it doesn’t feel dated or out-of-touch at all, even when he ribs being on Twitter. Much of that is due to his particular angle on the black experience that’s exquisitely composed and well thought out, but also hysterically pulls no punches.

Get Oh No, It’s Dwayne Kennedy on Bandcamp or iTunes now.

Apparently, it’s $9 for black folks and “it depends” for white folks.

SXSW Offering Up the Late Andy Ritchie’s Album “King Ding-a-Ling” for Free

It’s kind of beautiful to see Austin take care of his own.

Comedian Andy Ritchie unfortunately passed away last year and we all lost a great talent. While Ritchie was making his way in comedy in LA at the time, he came up in comedy first in Austin, TX.

So, SXSW, Austin’s big annual festival that has now featured a significant comedy portion for awhile now, is honoring his memory by offering his one and only album King Ding-a-Ling for free.

Please join in preserving Andy Ritchie’s comedy and download and listen to his album here thanks to SXSW and Stand Up! Records.

After years of honing her comedy wares in Los Angeles, Brandie Posey is now releasing her debut comedy album Opinion Cave.

This first hour offering showcases Brandie’s unshakeable determination as a comedian. She went DIY in the making of this album and her charming stories and bits highlight her marching forward, unfazed despite all the nonsense in the world that still exists in 2016, especially when it comes to being a woman.

Opinion Cave comes out tomorrow on Feb. 17th, but you can and should pre-order it right now.

Giulia Rozzi has just released what might be a perfect comedy album heading into Valentine’s Day this year, whether you’re a fan of the day or not. True Love follows Giulia in her loves lost and her own ordeals with relationships in these overly modern times. Though self-deprecating, Giulia has a refreshingly upbeat energy throughout the hour.

Hear for yourself in this preview over at The AV Club

True Love is now available off of Comedy Records on iTunes, Google Play, and Spotify.

UnCabaret Presents Another Posthumous Album “Judy Toll: Shareaholic”

One of Los Angeles longest running independent comedy institutions, UnCabaret, has been releasing collections of some of their favorite performers, some of which are unfortunately no longer with us. So far, they’ve made a collection of performances from Taylor Negron and now have gathered up a selection of performances from the late writer and comedian Judy Toll.

Before Toll passed away in 2002, she had written for anything from Curb Your Enthusiasm to Boy Meets World to Red Shoe Diaries. You can only imagine what sort of comic mind can successfully span a range of shows like that.

As a stand-up, she was fiercely honest and personal, but had such a spirited persona that convinced crowds to take the fun, self-deprecating ride through her life of tumultuous love, weight-loss/gain, etc.

Shareaholic is the only album that’s currently available, entirely recorded live at various performances at UnCabaret from years ago. You can get it now from Comedy Dynamics.

If you’ve been looking to take a trip fantastic through the mere words of a stand-up comedian, look no further than Ryan Singer and his latest album Immortal For Now.

Singer has a real talent for delving incredibly deep in his stand-up into what might seem like introspective esoterica about time, space, Gargamel’s origin story, the mating rituals of praying mantises, etc. but making it all accessible and straight up funny.

If you’re willing to take a journey through the comedic mind of Ryan Singer, and oh what a journey it is, we highly urge you to pick up Immortal For Now, just released from Stand-Up Records.

Greg Proops “In the Ball Park” Comes Out This Week from AST Records

Whether it comes to wit, verve, his command of the English language, and his seemingly inexhaustable knowledge of the world, Greg Proops never lets up.

On his sixth record, In The Ball Park, Proops not only shows he can keep up with the changing times in comedy, but can thrive in it on his own terms. You’ll notice on this album, just like much of his discography, that Greg still shifts gears flawlessly between topics, ranging from gun control to white pants to baseball, jokes, jokes within jokes, etc. without needing to take a breath.

You can see what we’re saying when you listen to this track.

In The Ball Park comes out on this Fri. Nov. 27th, but you can and should pre-order it now on iTunes or on vinyl from AST Records.

Mike Recine’s “Union Delegate” Comes Out Tomorrow from Comedy Dynamics

Comedy Dynamics has another really great release in Mike Recine’s upcoming album Union Delegate.

Recine has made his way through the NYC comedy scene ranks, seemingly, on the strength of how laid back he appears on stage while going to really weird and dark comedic corners in his act. In fact, Mike lures everyone in by sounding and looking normal enough, then very often going down a long, very colorful road of a metaphor or some observation. Such comedic stylings made for a really great album in Union Delegate.

No samples are available before its release tomorrow, but if you don’t want to take our word for it, watch his Conan set here.

All of you sure have got your comedy album binge listening cut out for you today.

What a day today is with Ian Karmel’s 9.2 on Pitchfork, Emily Heller’s Good For Her, Sean Donnelly’s Manual Labor Face, and Ron Funches’ The Funches of Us all being released.

All of them are definitely worth your time and money as we’ve stated before here, here, here, and here, respectively.

OK, you should probably get to buying and listening already. There’s a lot of comedy for your ears to feast on.

In addition to Emily Heller’s Good For Her, Kill Rock Stars is also putting another great comedy album, Ian Karmel’s 9.2 on Pitchfork.

This is Ian’s very first comedy album and it leaves a damn fine impression of Karmel and his stand-up. The hour weaves through every bit of Ian and gets quite personal, but Ian’s upbeat spirit and colorful attention to detail makes for one fun ride. Certainly, we think music tastemakers Pitchfork should entertain a special case for their rating system as the title of this album subtly suggests.

9.2 on Pitchfork comes out tomorrow, but if you’re really hankering for it, you can pre-order it from Kill Rock Stars here.

Emily Heller’s album Good For Her is another reason why this Friday is going to be a great day for comedy releases. Off of the same label, Kill Rock Stars, Ian Karmel and her are both releasing albums on that day just so you know.

Good For Her tours the mind of Emily Heller with all of its eccentricities structured very neatly into several bits that are both personal, yet also playful. A whole chunk on the multiple layers in which Frasier figures Emily’s life, both literally and metaphorically, is a pretty great example of that.

You can now pre-order Good For Her along with a T-shirt that has “Horny For Heller” printed on it for a Nov. 13th release. Also, if you’re one of the first 50 people to put an order for a CD, actual “googly eyes” will be glued on.

Jono Zalay is one of those odd cases in comedy where an individual went really far in one field that has nothing to do with telling jokes and went on to be a comedian any way because, as it turns out, that was their true calling.

Zalay got a PhD in neuroscience, but doing stand-up was not only something he chased passionately, but another field he came to excel in. As you might imagine, Jono takes a very logical, measured approach to his jokes on his album Snake Oil whether it depends on wordplay, timing, diction, syntax, or the angle in which he approaches his observations.

While you can see scientific influence in his comedy, it’s definitely, above all, funny.

Get Snake Oil, fresh off of the Comedy Dynamics label here.

Mike O’Brien’s Sketch Comedy Album “Tasty Radio” Out Now

The percentage of sketch comedy albums that exist within the comedy album pie is very much a thin sliver. The percentage of sketch comedy albums worth listening to is an even thinner slice of that pie, but Mike O’Brien’s Tasty Radio manages to fit right in.

Armed with a bunch of guest voice talent including his SNL compatriots, celebrities he’s cool with, as well as an clear absurdist itch that being at SNL couldn’t quite scratch just right, Mike O’Brien let his calculated silliness run wild with Scarlett Johansson’s sexiness put to the test with reading Bible verses, an unusual sex hotline, etc.

You can get Mike’s Tasty Radio off of Comedy Dynamics right here.

Dax Jordan’s Album “#1 Grandson” Dedicated to His Grandparents, Featuring His Dad on Drums Out Now

When it comes to parents and grandparents, most comedians only use them for material, often in a not so flattering light that shows why that comedian is driven to be a comedian.

However, Dax Jordan not only included his dad on his brand new album #1 Grandson, but made a dedication to his grandparents and even included a great closer in honor of them.

Dax’s dad plays drums quite well through some of Dax’s clever, punchy, puns, offering a perfect spice for them. Those sections buffer between Dax’s deeper, but still quite fun examinations into his personal issues including divorce and depression, making for a very well-rounded comedy album.

So, while the verdict may be out on your folks, you can enjoy Dax’s family by getting #1 Grandson here.

Let Eugene Mirman’s imagination run wild and you’ll get something as vast and brilliant as I’m Sorry (You’re Welcome).

Spanning 9 volumes and 7 LPs, Mirman has curated a veritable exhibition hall of his own comedy. There’s a traditional collection of straight stand-up, but there’s a vast array of the absurd including foley effects, Russian phrases, a “f*ckscape”, an audio representation of specific drugs and what it’s like to take them, ringtones, noises that could orgasms or something else very niche, and Eugene crying for a really long time.

All of it takes you deep into the recesses of Eugene’s mischievous psyche and back again, then in circles, then deeper, and around for another ago in the best way, most hilarious way possible.

Also, playing Eugene crying to any music video that’s overly maudlin like Adele’s Hello is pretty great.

Please get the album in digital or vinyl from Sub Pop Records or on iTunes now.

Mirman is doing a tour that kicks off tomorrow from Oct. 30th-Nov. 19th going to Brooklyn, LA, Seattle, Portland, Austin, and Boston. Get tickets and info here.

To our knowledge, there isn’t a comedy album release that spans more time than with one comedian quite like The Chronicles of Federman.

30 years of a great comedian, Wayne Federman, who has smoothly adapted to the ever-changing landscape of humor are all captured in select performances in venues big and small, then remastered, and put onto this album along with liner notes from longtime Federman fan, Judd Apatow.

So, get a copy from AST Records or iTunes and have probably one of the best trips ever through comedy history all the way to comedy present, especially since its purely through the lens of Wayne Federman.

If not, you’ll probably fall in love with her any way, hence the album title.

Whether you’ve watched Randy all week or not, we’re pretty sure you’ll get charmed by his well-crafted silliness that never wavers in how pure it is in this recording. Just look at the album art if you’re skeptical.

Mary Mack’s Fantastic “Pig Woman” Out Now

It’s almost as if Mary Mack has rose colored glasses that have been well worn with her latest album, Pig Woman. She maintains an undeniable joy in the face of what’s really going on in her life, which approximates to a sort of down-to-earth, Midwestern zeitgeist. It’s especially mischievous and fun when she gets almost too cozy, as opposed to traditional crowd work, with the crowd.

The whole album is a true joy to listen to and is funny no matter if you’re a city slicker or if you’re a woodland person like Mary.

In the case of Star Wars, Yoda’s maxim is that “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”

In the case of Dan Telfer, fear leads to the solid emotional core of his comedy and what has driven the laughs over three albums without heading to a veritable “dark side”. His third album off of AST Records, Oceans of Panic, continues being a hilarious voice that speaks to a sort of collective consciousness of anxiety even when Dan is talking about how he’s anxious of just animals or sports.
