Here’s The First Teaser Trailer of “The Comedians” with Josh Gad and Billy Crystal

In FX’s upcoming “The Comedians” Billy Crystal and Josh Gad are set to clash generationally as comedians on a sketch show. That might seem a little reminiscent of the premises of Mulaney or even Studio 60, but The Comedians seems to be going for a more, FX single-cam grounded comedy vibe (i.e. Louie, Married, etc).

See for yourself in the first teaser trailer that was posted today.

The Comedians premieres on FX on Apr. 9th.

This spring, FX will see a whole hour block of series focused on the lives of comedians.

The series premiere of The Comedians with Josh Gad and Billy Crystal playing two comedians bridging generational gaps in comedy and the premiere of the fifth season of Louie will kick off Apr. 9th at 10PM.

Note that, Louie will only have 8 episodes for this latest season, which seems like the season order of a freshman show. However, The Comedians will have Mel Brooks, Jimmy Kimmel, and Rob Reiner as guest stars in their first season (via Variety).

This still makes us curious how comedies are split between FX and FXx.

Along with the announcing of the Emmy winners last night, The Primetime Emmys telecast had none other than Billy Crystal honor one of the now, late greats, Robin Williams and Weird Al Yankovic, who is continuing to have a banner year, add his own lyrics to the theme songs of Game of Thrones, Mad Men, Homeland, Scandal, and Modern Family.

It’s a good thing that these Emmys didn’t air on the same night as the MTV VMAs so we didn’t have to flip channels between this and Beyonce.

FX/FXx Picks Up Billy Crystal-Josh Gad Series ‘The Comedians’

The premise of two eras of comedy colliding, more disparate than those of Funny People with Seth Rogen and Adam Sandler, is now going to be the newest show at FX/FXx will have Josh Gad as a younger, edgier comedian working for vet comedian played by Billy Crystal (who is making a long awaited return to TV here) on a sketch show.

As this is another show dealing with the sort of the behind the scenes of comedy under the umbrella of FX, we immediately wonder if they or Louie would do a crossover of any kind.

In promotion of his new memoir “Still Foolin’ Them: Where I’ve Been, Where I’m Going, and Where the Hell Are My Keys”, Billy Crystal stopped by The Daily Show to share some of his tales from doing stand-up back in the day talking of how he opened for Blood, Sweat, and Tears and played with some of the weirder acts back in the Catskills days, Lenny Schultz.

FX Orders Comedy Pilot ‘The Comedians’ Starring Billy Crystal

Based off the description, part of us thinks it’s kind of the flipside of the scene from Annie Hall where Woody Allen is listening to a talk show host on what type of jokes he wants. Another part of us thinks that could be really great and that FXx consequently will be great.
