R.I.P. Barry Crimmins, 1953-2018

“Helen [Crimmins] here with sad news…Barry passed peacefully yesterday with Bobcat and I. He would want everyone to know that he cared deeply about mankind and wants you to carry on the good fight. Peace.”

-@crimmins

Comedian, satirist, activist, and all around a shining beacon of a human being, Barry Crimmins not only set a path for comedians to find their way in Boston over several decades, but also took action beyond his comedic truth that he always spoke to power (a rare thing for a comedian to do).

So, if you haven’t already, take some time to watch/listen to his one hour special Whatever Threatens You, the Bobcat Goldthwait documentary about Barry’s fight against Internet child abuse Call Me Lucky, and anything else you can find to honor Barry’s life, works, and memory.

As Louis CK wrote in his e-mail announcing the release of his special, many comedians that started out in Boston see Barry Crimmins as a sort of godfather in the Boston comedy scene.

You’ve might have heard of Crimmins from the much lauded, powerful documentary, Call Me Lucky, by Bobcat Goldthwait. He is also held in such hard regard in Boston comedy for so many years. In fact, it’s almost crazy to think that this is his first live comedy special.

CK adds, “Barry is a legend. A great mind, an author and activist and political satirist. He has been an important voice of passion and reason since the 1970s. He has stood before thousands of audiences of every size and type and told them the truth with wit and wisdom, with anger and compassion. Barry was a towering example to me when I started doing standup at age 18. He fostered the comedy scene that I cut my teeth on and later became my friend. More than all of that, I am his fan. I love his voice. He makes me laugh. He’s always right. There has NEVER been another comic like him.”

So, with that all of said, you can now get Whatever Threatens You, shot this summer in Lawrence, Kansas by CK himself for just $5.

“Then there’s guys like Barry Crimmins,15 who is a political satirist from the ’80s. I’m actually shooting a stand-up special for him that I’m producing and putting on my website. Barry’s a great voice from the past who’s still kicking.”

-Louis CK

Bobcat Goldthwait’s important documentary, Call Me Lucky, about longtime comedian and activist Barry Crimmins has given Crimmins’ achievements and comedy another much needed spotlight.

Louis C.K. will now be giving Barry more of that spotlight as he’ll be shooting a comedy special and releasing it through louisck.net.

If you’ve seen the doc, you should be more than intrigued at what Crimmins has to say about the world today.
