Pick of the Day: Ron Lynch Presents Hook Up! The “Tomorrow!” Dating Show (in LA) 2/12

OK, if you have to go to something romance or dating themed this weekend because of Valentine’s Day in LA, we’d make sure to tell you about how much of corporate money-grab that Valentine’s Day is rooted in THEN tell you to enjoy one of our all-time favorite shows, no matter what time of year it is, Hook Up!, the dating game edition of Tomorrow! with Ron Lynch.

As far as dating games go, it’s not as wild in the sense of Temptation Island or Too Hot to Handle, but it’s still a crazy, absurd mutation of the classic Dating Game and we have loved it for that very reason for several years. Given our hatred of Valentine’s, it’s one of the only things that we’re looking forward to this weekend (also, we couldn’t care less about the Super Bowl).

Ron Lynch will be presiding as host of the romantic hijinks and chaos and be also joined by the stand-up comedy stylings of Steph Tolev, Brady Novak, Mark Fite, Amber Preston, and Randy Liedtke.

This edition of Hook Up! will go down at Tomorrow!’s new home, The Elysian, this Sat. Feb. 12th at Midnight. Tickets are still only $10 and you best go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Yard Apples (LA) 6/24

One of the main great things that The Yard Theater in LA (formerly known as The Fake Gallery in a past era of comedy) had going just before lockdown was their recurring show, Yard Apples.

As we mentioned before, The Yard had done wonders to gussy themselves up and it was prime, before March 2020, to have so many more lovely comedy, music, and variety shows within its walls. They’ve thankfully survived and now is your chance to go see what we’re sure will be marvelous programming starting with Yard Apples on this Thurs. Jun. 24th at 8PM PT.

This first Yard Apples back has the venue’s proprietor himself, John Ennis, along with the amazing Chris Walsh and Frank Fairfield, host LA favorites Amber Preston, Jono Zalay, Kiran Deol, Jackie Kashian, and Ron Lynch.

Tickets are only $10 (proof of vaccination required at door). Go get them here.

Please Get and Enjoy Amber Preston’s Terrific Album “Sparkly Parts”

The arrival of comedy albums recorded in the before times (you know with audiences gathering in tight spaces to laugh communally) keeps being a very welcome and very nostalgic break to the reality that we’re faced with and have been faced with over the last couple of months.

Amber Preston’s brand new album Sparkly Parts that was just released last week is one such delightful vacation from reality. Preston’s pristine Midwestern accent and persona disguises her worldly experience throughout the record. The contrast between the two just makes her keen comedic observations all the sweeter and unmistakably charming (even if they get a little risqué here or there). There’s a homespun feeling to it all, but Preston’s astute writing and craftsmanship really serve up a thoroughly satisfying hour (especially with how she closes it all on such a good punchline).

So, go get Amber Preston‘s Sparkly Parts as it’s available now for download from Stand Up! Records.

The wondrous and hysterical Canadian transplant Debra DiGiovanni and TCB’s Jake Kroeger have quite the hopeful chat about her numerous gigs doing live-streaming comedy in the last several weeks and how she might specifically imagine to take the stage again and what that might really look like (especially for someone who has played comedy venues of all sorts of sizes). Also, they touch upon the tragic closure of the Upright Citizens Brigade in NYC, the rescheduling of some major comedy festivals, as well as what’s new and/or noteworthy in comedy this week.

Follow Debra @debradg on Instagram & @debradigiovanni on Twitter. Tune in to her daily Instagram Live check-in show Afternoon Delight with Zach Noe Towers at 4PM PT via her Instagram handle.
