The Record Holders for ‘Longest Stand-Up Comedy Show-Multiple Comedians’ Will Try Breaking Their Own Record Next Year by 5 Minutes

Nashville’s DJ Buckley, his cohorts at Nashville Stand Up, and several special guests have already clocked in a 184 hour and 16 minute continuous stand-up comedy show to set the world record for longest stand-up comedy show with multiple comedians.

Who would be crazy enough to break that record that is more than a continuous week of stand-up comedy? Well, it turns out that Buckley and company were crazy enough to pull off their first record and are just crazy enough to try to break it.

In case you’re concerned how much longer they’re going to this time, they’re only attempting a show that’s 5 minutes longer, which makes us think that they’re going to make this an annual tradition that gets 5 minutes longer every year.

So, on 11:59am on Sunday, May 15th, 2016, the attempt will begin at The East Room in Nashville and go on for the next several days that are necessary to accomplish the feat.

Old Navy Continues Its Streak of Great Comedian Spokespeople with Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein

First, it was Amy Poehler. Then, it was Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Then, it was Julia Louis-Dreyfus with Kumail Nanjiani and Snoop Dog. 

Now, it’s Portlandia’s own Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein that are starring in the latest round of Old Navy ads. 

Like all the folks before them, it seems like they crafted the ads themselves since they kind of play like sketches from Portlandia.

In fact, if you’re having some sort of Portlandia withdrawals, these ads might soothe you for just a bit before season 6 premieres on Jan. 21st.

The words spirits and Christmas most often conjure up images of Charles Dickens’ renowned cautionary holiday tale, A Christmas Carol.

However, when it comes to the landlord of Bob’s Burgers, Calvin Fischoeder (voiced by Kevin Kline), the ‘spirits’ portion of “Spirits of Christmas” takes on a different meaning.

Chaz Stevens on Mission to Erect Gay Festivus Poles at State Capitols Across the U.S.

Just to hit the whole “a Festivus for the rest of us” message home, the Festivus pole has just gotten an upgrade.

Chaz Stevens is not only spreading the non-religious holiday celebration of Festivus, the celebration popularized by Seinfeld by erecting Festivus poles, but adding a disco ball and rainbow colors to it in support of gay rights.

So far, he’s actually gotten them put up in a handful of state capitols including the one in Oklahoma City, OK and we can definitely see this catching on.

Don’t be surprised if this becomes a popular holiday decoration soon.

Odds are that this is the closest you’ll get to seeing Oh, Hello for awhile. 

Just as an off-Broadway show, Oh, Hello, with John Mulaney and Nick Kroll as the two mischievous geriatric New Yorkers, has done quite well in its run selling out both at The Cherry Lane Theatre and doing the same at Boston’s Wilbur Theatre. 

With all their success, Mulaney and—, St. Geegland and Faizon we should say, taped an entire press conference, which is probably as good as any teaser we could have gotten for the show.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is on hiatus, so Stephen hosting the prestigious event will have to do.

Though the gala ceremony has already taken place, you’ll get to see it broadcast for the first time on Tuesday, Dec. 29th at 9PM on CBS.

Colbert has already gotten a bunch of big hosting gig, including his current Late Show one, under his belt, and we think he’s got a lot more ahead of him for quite some time.

On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at 6PM PST/9PM EST this week, Starz is airing three episodes per night of season 1 of Ash vs. Evil Dead leading up to the finale on Saturday.

IFC Is Airing Marathons of All of Portlandia and Todd Margaret For New Year’s

Not sure what you’re doing New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day? Maybe you can’t figure out what your New Year’s Resolution will be?

In either case, IFC is offering up marathons of every episode of both Portlandia and Todd Margaret that might make answering those two questions a little easier (i.e. spend the night watching or resolve to watch both series in their entirety).

The Todd Margaret marathon starts on New Year’s Eve at 6PM and the Portlandia marathon follows shortly thereafter on New Year’s Day at 6AM.

Thank Goodness for Beth Stelling and How You Should Always Be Able To Talk About “It”, Especially in Comedy

Simply put, Beth Stelling is the best and comedy needs to take care of its own much more often.

Above many other functions that comedy serves, comedy is a rare art form that allows for discussion of and expression on topics that are too dark, tragic, inappropriate, etc. Many people would just rather just say “it” when such topics come up as opposed to saying something like “rape” in normal conversation where comedians are given the latitude to delve in. This is especially true when it comes to comedy that draws directly from a comedian’s life, often making for something incredibly personal, vulnerable, and special. 

Beth Stelling is particularly exceptional in this regard. In fact, she is absolutely one of our favorite comedians to watch because of the way she weaves the funny so beautifully through the darkness in her life.

Hopefully by now, you’ve seen Beth Stelling’s Instagram post about her rape by an ex-boyfriend, who has been noted as being a real dirtbag on several instances from several other women in the LA comedy community. For a long time, she felt conflicted in sharing her horrifying experience as he was still in the community and had specifically asked her to, “…consider me when you talk about your ex because everyone knows who you’re talking about.” In her post, Beth added, “There are many reasons not to make an abusive relationship public, mostly fear. Scared of what people will think, scared it makes me look weak or unprofessional.”

Fortunately, Beth has now considered otherwise and has received tons of love and support, as she should. 

It’s unfortunate that we live in a time where not only rape is still committed often, but “victim shaming” is a term, and that many women often go years keeping their encounter with sexual assault or rape completely secret. Such traumatic experiences should be talked about and shared because, if nothing else, to find that you’re not alone, it’s not your fault, and to raise awareness that rape is not only happening, but happening closer to home than many people even know. 

So, with all of that said, no one who has suffered such a thing as rape should feel scared in sharing their story because of what else might happen to them. People will have your back whether you know it or not. We can’t speak for the whole world, but if you’re a comedian, you can clearly see with the support Beth has gotten that the comedy community will have your back.

Besides, what would comedy be if you couldn’t talk about it?
