Watch The Death of, Not a Salesman, But a Content Creator

May 29, 2015
Uncategorized
arthur miller, content creator, death of a saleman, greg roman, jocelyn deboer, nick ciarelli, olivia norman, parody, ucb, upright citizens brigade, will reese

Just like Arthur Miller saw how living the ‘American way’ became a fallacy and wrote Death of a Saleman, UCB LA Digital’s Will Reese, Nick Ciarelli, and Bradford Evans sees how trying to make a living off of attempting to make viral videos has become something very similar.

Watch as Greg Roman, Jocelyn DeBoer, and Olivia Norman try to keep it together in the 2010s on the hopes that the views of a parody video will cross into the seven figure thresh hold.

HBO Orders Two Seasons of Animated Comedy Series “Animals” From Phil Matarese, Mike Luciano, and The Duplass Brothers

Props to HBO for decisiveness.

Both The Duplass Brothers and HBO are expanding their comedic scope by going two seasons in on an animated comedy series created by Phil Matarese and Mike Luciano. Apparently, it’s good enough to warrant the entire first season being picked up by HBO as well as the order for a second one all in one feel swoop.

As Animals follows NYC based animals and is targeted at adults, we’re curious how many animal jokes they’ll be firing off as compared to BoJack Horseman.

Nick Kroll, Katie Aselton, and Mark Duplass are all set to voice various animals.

We hope this is a hit not only to have a good show, but to encourage networks to give bigger season orders to new shows or have faith in new shows at all.

Animated Feature “Henchmen” Adds Thomas Middleditch, Nathan Fillion, and More To Already Stellar Cast

May 30, 2015
Uncategorized
henchmen, nathan fillion, thomas middleditch

(via Variety)

The cast of Henchmen already had Jane Krakowski, Craig Robinson, Will Sasso, and Rob Riggle.

As part of a growing trend to humanize cartoon villains, Henchmen will have the impressive cast of the aforementioned and Thomas Middleditch, Rosario Dawson, Alfred Molina, Nathan Fillion, and James Marsden.

Always an underdog and never starting as top dog, Middleditch stars as the newest member to an evil organization that falls into trouble by taking a weapon that he shouldn’t have.

Just from the description, we’re guessing that Henchmen probably be slightly less goofy than Minions (for starters, the Henchmen probably don’t speak gibberish). Let’s hope that it’ll please a wider age range of audiences as well.

NYC’s oldest comedy club, The Comic Strip, now has a documentary marking almost 40 years of showcasing live comedy in NYC’s Upper East Side.

Eat, Drink, Laugh: The Story of The Comic Strip follows the likes of Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, Colin Quinn, Paul Provenza, Gilbert Gottfried, Billy Crystal, and more as they were coming up in NYC’s comedy scene decades ago and sees the club running to the present day.

You can rent it for $6.99 or buy for $9.99 on Vimeo on Demand here.

If There Was a Parody Fox News Panel Show Hosted by Jeff Foxworthy, It Might Be Jason Saenz’s “Foxworthy & Friends”

May 30, 2015
Uncategorized
adam newman, chris gethard, fox news, jeff foxworthy, nate fernald, nick offerman, nick turner, panel show, parody, redneck

From the mind of Jason Saenz, comes a panel show that you might see on something like the Fox News Channel, hosted by Jeff Foxworthy and the “you might be a redneck” joke that will follow him forever.

On Foxworthy & Friends, he’ll have guests that aren’t his friends including Nick Offerman (played deftly by Frank Garcia Hejl)…

…Chris Gethard…

…Nate Fernald…

…Nick Turner…

…and Adam Newman.

For those of you that love when talk shows get out of hand, especially when the host has seem to lost a grip on things, you’ll dig Saenz as Foxworthy trying to shoehorn redneck into everything.

Watch Foxworthy and Friends here.

Gravitas Ventures To Release “Addicted To Fresno” With Judy Greer and Natasha Lyonne This Fall

May 30, 2015
Uncategorized
gravitas ventures, judy greer, natasha lyonne, sxsw

(via Deadline)

Once called “Fresno”, “Addicted to Fresno” played at SXSW earlier year.

As mentioned before, Judy Greer and Natasha Lyonne play co-dependent sisters trying to cover up an accidental murder, which already sounds like it could be good fun.

On top of that, Fred Armisen, Aubrey Plaza, Kumail Nanjiani, Jessica St. Clair, Molly Shannon, and Ron Livingston round out the cast and Karey Dornetto (whose written on many of your favorite shows including Portlandia and Arrested Development and South Park) wrote the script. So, you’ll probably want to check it out or, at the very least, be excited for a trailer.

Gravitas Ventures has acquired Addicted to Fresno for a fall release.

If this fares well, we’ll be curious to see if SXSW’s film line-up gets even more coveted and expanded next year a la Sundance. It wouldn’t be surprising if it happened, especially in regards to comedy since there’s a comedy portion of the festival already that has screened several comedies, both studio and indie.

Paul Isakson’s meta first person vlog King of YouTube and Alex Kavutskiy and Ariel Gardner’s Kill The Baby finished at the top in the round of Channel 101, which, we think, show the rest of TV how to really blend horror and comedy.

Also, check out the other top series from this month delightfully titled Caveman Hate Technology, Stupid Bitch, and Natasha.

John Oliver and “Last Week Tonight” Take Down FIFA Once More After FIFA Arrests

Last year, John Oliver did a great takedown on Last Week Tonight of FIFA and its handling of the most recent World Cup as well as its history of corruption over the last several years.

As there arrests of several high ranking officials at FIFA by the U.S. and the re-election of FIFA President Sep Blatter, now on his fifth term, just came about only a few days ago, you knew that Oliver and his team were going to say something about it.

Of course, Oliver pulled no punches and even promised a stunt with FIFA sponsors to urge Blatter’s removal from office.

Looks like cable and online streaming networks are still killing it.

Only one network sitcom got an award from this year’s Critics’ Choice Television Awards, which is yet another example of how well cable and Amazon/Netflix/Hulu/etc. are doing.

Best Actress in a Comedy Series-Amy Schumer, Inside Amy Schumer

“Big Trouble in Little China” Remake In The Works With Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson Possibly Starring

June 1, 2015
Uncategorized

(via Variety)

We guess it was inevitable that one of the funniest action/horror movies of all time would needlessly get a remake. Let’s just hope it does star The Rock.

Big Trouble in Little China was definitely a highlight of both Kurt Russell and John Carpenter’s careers and pretty much perfect, in our opinion, the way it is.

However, if a remake is going forward, take some solace in that it might star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson who made an earthquake disaster movie make bank over the weekend and that the writer of X-Men: First Class and Thor is co-writing it.

Worst comes to worst, Honest Trailers will surely have something spot on to say about it.

The 2015 LA Indie Improv Festival Set For July 18th

For those of you not stopping by The Clubhouse and several other places around LA, you might not know that there is vibrant indie improv scene going on. It’s impressive considering that’s on top of the improv that happens at UCB, iO West, Westside Comedy Theater, Second City, etc. and all the stand-up comedy and sketch that also go up every night in LA.

So, there will be one whole day dedicated to those striking out on their own to do make ‘em ups in The LA Indie Improv Festival on July 18th. If you’re interested in performing, you’ll be able to submit here starting Jun. 15th.

Combining what could be a fun Goonies-ish heist film and the modern day equivalents of Mark Twain’s legendary characters Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, Band of Robbers looks promising as an indie comedy, a niche genre that’s slowly becoming synonymous with dramedy.

Writer/director duo Adam Nee and Aaron Nee bring Matthew Gray Gubler, Kyle Gallner, Hannibal Buress, Johnny Pemberton, and more to pull this off.

Watch the teaser here and then maybe, if you can, catch at The LA Film Festival on Jun. 13th.

One by one, more comedy networks now are getting their own digital arm.

Comedy Central has CC:Studios, Fox has FoxADHD, IFC has Comedy Crib, and now Fusion has just launched their digital online comedy studio “F-Comedy”.

They’ll be partnering with the YouTube Space, UCB, 3 Arts, NYC’s The Stand and more to bring a bunch of new original, short form content that’s hopefully in the wheelhouse that they’ve been building with No, You Shut Up! with Paul F. Tompkins and The Chris Gethard Show.

Comedy Central is wise to double down on getting into the Nikki Glaser business.

We were blindsided when Nikki & Sara Live got cancelled at MTV and also surprised that Nikki didn’t immediately get to delve right back into another TV show elsewhere.

Finally, Nikki is set to return with a brand new series “Not Safe with Nikki Glaser”, a panel show focusing on all things sex, and a new hour stand-up special all on Comedy Central. Look for the series and the special sometime next year.

We’re confident that Nikki will one up all the other attempts at a funny sex panel show on TV. We wonder if that will involve talking to people after they just had sex in something more exciting looking than a box.

Over a month ago, Brian Grazer mentioned in passing that there were more episodes of Arrested Development coming. Now, you can have a time frame to look forward to.

Production, with everyone coming back, will begin at the beginning of 2016 and then come out approximately after a calendar season. Hopefully, they can have most of the Bluths together again.

Though not mentioned in Grazer’s last podcast appearance, Arrested Development is staying at Netflix. So, don’t be surprised if Netflix will account for even more Internet traffic at this time next year than the third in North America that they already do right now.

It’s not that you’d be surprised how Screen Junkies takes on one of the most popular, yet made-fun-of series at HBO, Entourage.

It’s just that the epic honest trailer voice guy makes the picking apart of the show so much more fun. Certainly, Wendy Molyneux will enjoy this before forcing herself to watch the Entourage movie for charity.
