Paul Scheer Is Now Re-creating Episodes of TRL Called “Scheer-RL”

May 12, 2015
Uncategorized
98 degrees, carson daly, jash, parody, paul scheer, ryan hansen, scheer-rl, thomas middleditch, total request live, trl

This first one is a doozy with Ryan Hansen and Thomas Middleditch playing members 98 Degrees.

Remember when Paul Scheer recreated some of the craziest moments on The Arsenio Hall Show from the 90s and called it “The ArScheerio Paul Show”?

Well, Paul’s giving hit music video countdown show Total Request Live the same treatment on JASH as Scheer-RL, though, this time he’s getting a little more creative with the recreations rather than exactly reenacting what happened.

This first episode features one of the more awkward appearances on TRL with the boy band 98 Degrees, exaggerated perfectly.

David Huntsberger Is Getting His Own Late Night Talk/Sketch Show, “Reactor” at SyFy

(via Entertainment Weekly)

As of late, there are more intersections between science and comedy. The one we think you should probably know is David Huntsberger who has plenty of material about how the brain functions, relativity, etc.

SyFy’s latest attempt at a talk show will be Reactor hosted by David Huntsberger. Like a traditional late night talk show, it’ll have guests, sketches, and air at 11:30PM, but it will specifically focus on pop culture’s run-ins with science fiction.

Last year, there was the short lived Wil Wheaton Project at SyFy that had similar aims. Hopefully, Reactor, which premieres Thurs. July 16th at 11:30PM, will go much better. Huntsberger has 12 episodes to accomplish just that.

There’s a fun announcement video at EW by David himself that details Reactor more.

Sean White’s “Dead & Gone”, An Album That Really Delves Into Death, Is Out Now

Without giving too much away, Sean White has experienced just about as much death one can experience without dying on your own.

From that, he deftly explores the shades of black within the darker corners of comedy, especially when it comes to the more practical aspects of losing people that are close to you.

His album “Dead & Gone” is available now from AST Records. You can hear what we’re talking about in these two clips that open the album.

“Help” Moshe Kasher, Who Can Easily Afford His Rent, Pay His Rent on GoFundMe

This might do for crowdfunding what Colbert did for Super PACs.

The very funny Moshe Kasher has started a GoFundMe campaign with the simple goal of paying his rent for this June. To be clear, Moshe is not in dire straights and is actually keeping busy with his increasingly more successful active acting career, but he makes one hell of a “great” crowdfunding pitch.

Read it here and maybe consider supporting someone that is doing quite alright.

Conan O’Brien To Go on Six Week Long Remote Trips Next Year

May 13, 2015

(via Brian Steinberg/@bristei)

Whether they read this thing we wrote awhile back, we’re thrilled to hear that Conan is going to roam more “in the wild” so to speak in 2016.

Probably one of the best parts of this era of Conan O’Brien’s late night talk show career is when he steps away from the desk and couch and goes out into the world. For years, O’Brien has made situations that wouldn’t seem to have any inherent comedy in them like delivering Chinese food, going into doll store, or doing commercial auditions, and make something absolutely hysterical. It’s comedy alchemy making comedy gold from seemingly nothing.

Conan’s trip to Cuba is proof positive of how doing an entire show of remotes would work quite well.

So, ahead of what is sure to be a memorable week at Comic-Con for Conan and company next month, we all have way more remote segments to look forward to from Conan in the form of six week-long trips starting next year.

Hopefully, this means more trips to breweries, distilleries, etc. where Conan tries to shorten the guided tour to get to drinking.

Kate McKinnon Isn’t Messing Around, Sort Of, With Louis C.K. in These SNL Promos

Amy Schumer Deftly Satirized Late Night Talk Show Interviews of Women

As you saw with Tina Fey and the last fancy dress she’ll ever wear on Letterman, many women that make an appearance on a late night talk show go through a bunch of hoops, specifically in regards to their looks and what they’re wearing, in order to promote their movie, tv show, etc.

Inside Amy Schumer’s latest sketch summarizes the phenomenon with a little NSFW exaggeration pretty well.

Also, seeing Bill Hader as late night talk show host caricature is pretty great too.

Jason Alexander Set To Star in Adult Swim Pilot

Jason Alexander as a therapist who snaps and then still treats people? We’re on board.

Adult Swim’s latest pilot comes from Adam Lustick who you’ve probably seen on Harvard Sailing Team and will indeed have Jason Alexander as a therapist who just loses it, but still takes on his patients, giving them crazy advice on how to go about their lives.

Somehow, this seems to mirror any and all who took any actual advice from George Costanza and applied it to their real life.

Nacho Vigalondo’s Next Film Is “Colossal” with Anne Hathaway, Which Is Described as “Godzilla” Meets “Being John Malkovich”

May 13, 2015
Uncategorized

(via The Hollywood Reporter)

While that seems like two films pulled out of a hat to mash-up, Nacho Vigalondo is one of only a few directors that could make this project seem like it was meant to be.

Frequently one for the fantastical and darker sides of humor (check out this short from a couple of years ago), Spanish filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo has taken on quite the film in Colossal, which has been cited as somewhere between Adaptation, Transformers, Godzilla, and Being John Malkovich.

Anne Hathaway plays a seemingly normal woman who befalls misfortune then finds out that her life is connected to the destruction of a giant lizard thousands and thousands of miles away.

While this is sure to cross plenty of genres, we’re confident that this will be worth checking out as soon as it’s on a screen near you.

TruTV really wasn’t kidding with their rebranding.

Their portion of this year’s Upfronts consisted of an intriguing slate that includes a series order of Adam Conover’s Adam Ruins Everything, which should bring an air of funny bittersweetness to us all with Adam’s explanation of things we unfortunately take for granted, and a pilot from stand-up comedians and real life husband and wife Tom Segura and Christina Pazsitzky.

Along with Those Who Can’t and gaining Billy On The Street, TruTV’s line-up becomes more enticing everyday.

Stopping by to promote the new season of Maron, which starts tonight, Marc Maron chatted with Jimmy Fallon about opposite ends of the heckler/troll spectrum that comedians have come to deal with in this era of comedy.

First off, Marc had to delicately eal with a whole family including their baby being in the crowd at a show that he wasn’t aware was all ages.

Then, on the other end, Marc went to great lengths to get back at someone trolling on him Twitter. How far? How about casting someone in your show so you can tell a story about it on late night?

Harry Shearer Is Leaving “The Simpsons”

Harry Shearer voiced Ned Flanders, Montgomery Burns, Smithers, Reverend Lovejoy, Lenny, Otto, Kent Brockman, Dr. Julius Hibbert, and many more characters on The Simpsons.

Shearer turned down the offer that was made for the rest of the cast as he wanted to pursue other projects.

Harry tweeted last night:

from James L.  Brooks’ lawyer: “show will go on,  Harry will not be part of it, wish him the best." This because I wanted what we’ve always had: the freedom to do other work.

This, as you can imagine, leaves a big hole in The Simpsons cast as they go into their next two seasons that were just ordered by Fox.

However, the show plans on finding new talent to step in for the bunches of iconic characters done by Shearer.

We’ll be curious to see if this is addressed at all in any episodes of The Simpsons.

TBS Orders Alien Abduction Comedy Pilot “The Group” From Conan O’Brien and Greg Daniels

(via Deadline)

TBS is really stepping up their game this year.

Shows from Samantha Bee and Jason Jones as well as Angie Tribeca already has raised anticipation of the new of programming coming to TBS.

TBS/TNT President Kevin Reilly is trying to keep that anticipation up on the TBS end with a pilot from the minds of Conan O’Brien and The Office’s Greg Daniels.

Their project, “The Group”, is centered on a support group for folks that think they’ve been through an alien abduction as they’re profiled by a very skeptical journalist. Of course, he becomes unsure of what’s going on the further he explores their stories.

We’d definitely hope this goes to series just so we can see the pilot of this.

If this goes well, maybe all those fake shows that Conan makes faux promos for might get reconsidered?

Moses Storm Pulled Off The First Ever All Phone Screening For Premiere of “#MODERNMILLENNIAL”

We were there and we all did pull out our phones at Moses’ request to watch a short film while seated at a movie theater.

Postmodern prankster, comedian, and actor Moses Storm pulled quite the appropriate stunt last week for the premiere of his documentary short film #MODERNMILLENNIAL that satirizes social media, crowdfunding, and the culture that has grown from it.

Last Wednesday, Storm packed in a capacity crowd at The Downtown Independent in Downtown LA that were all totally thinking they were going to watch the premiere on the big screen. After playing the trailer, a YouTube URL appeared and Moses announced that the film could only be watched on our phones via the YouTube link projected on the screen.

Taking every precaution, Moses offered headphones, WiFi passwords, chargers for every sort of phone, and spare phones with those that only have a flip phone or no phone at all. For one time, it was kind of great that everyone had their phones out at a movie theater.

It made for a great, immersive experience that was probably the perfect way to watch a film that focuses on the absurdities of everything that’s connected to being a millennial. See more pictures and see that we’re not trying to pull your leg here.

Also, the documentary short itself was pretty great and we’ll let you know when and where you can watch it as soon as we can.

Suit yourself, Showtime. It’s your loss.

The musical dark romantic comedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend starring Rachel Bloom that Showtime ordered to pilot, then ultimately passed on, now has another life over at The CW.

CW has gotten plenty of praise for Jane The Virgin, and, from the looks of this Upfronts preview, they’re going to keep that ball of praise rolling.

Look for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend on Mondays at The CW starting this Fall.

Scheer-RL Relives When TRL Did a Sit Down with Marilyn and When an Uninvited Mariah Carey Came with a Popsicle Cart

Paul Scheer’s Scheer-RL continues to roll out with recreating some of the crazier moments that have happened on any sort of show, much less a music video countdown show like Total Request Live.

These latest episodes recount the times when Marilyn Manson, played by here Brett Gelman, fielded weird questions from Carson Daly and audience members about his controversial music and when Mariah Carey, played by Kumail Nanjiani, just bizarrely showed up without any prior booking or invitation along with a popsicle cart right before they cut to commercial.

Though exaggerated, stuff like Mariah interrupting TRL really did happen and Scheer-RL does well in playing up what many of us were thinking when that was happening live.

Tom Hanks and Bill Murray Will Be Final Guests on Letterman Before Finale

Of course the final guests are Tom Hanks and Bill Murray.

The finale episode of The Late Show with David Letterman doesn’t have a line-up of guests, which we guess is to keep us all in suspense as to whether Dave will have a big star-studded salutation to late night as is customary or do something else altogether.

Still, the two days leading up to Wed. May 20th are sure to have plenty of moments that will be memorable for years to come with Hanks and Murray, two of the best late night guests that ever were. There will also be musical performances from Eddie Vedder and Bob Dylan.

Hanks and Vedder will be on Monday night’s show and Murray and Dylan on Tuesday.

Any takers on what Murray will be wearing in his final appearance or if he might take a jackhammer to the stage again?
