Neil Patrick Harris to Host Oscars

October 15, 2014
Uncategorized

It’s about time that one of the best awards show hosts in the business, Neil Patrick Harris, gets a crack at The Oscars.

Not only is it a perfect choice with all his ability to sing, dance, be funny, and poised, that might leave all those live-tweeting wanting to not be snarky, but, apparently, it’s been on his bucket list for quite some time now.

(via Variety)

Paul Feig’s Other Space, his upcoming Yahoo series, is starting to shape up as it’s gathered up a great cast in Joel Hodgson and Trace Beaulieu from a famous comedy series set in space, Mystery Science Theater 3000, in addition to a great bunch in Eugene Cordero, Neil Casey, Milana Vayntrub, Conor Leslie, Bess Rous, and Karen Soni.

Feig is going to delve into what it would be like if man explored most of the universe is the type, which leaves plenty of room for echoes of Undeclared and Freaks and Geeks.

We’re absolutely looking forward to this when it comes around next year.

Saturday Night Live’s Chris Kelly is making a huge step forward with not only moving up to the director’s seat, but making his directorial debut one of a film following a gay SNL writer having to go home to take care of his ill mother and take care of other personal issues.

Jesse Plemons and Sissy Spacek are set to star in this film Other People. We’re not sure to what extent SNL is going to play into the movie, but this might be up the alley of all those still missing Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip.

Every time Bill Murray comes on to The Late Show with David Letterman, it’s a pretty magical time.

Whether he’s merely telling true stories or thinking up of who should be in the female reboot of The Ghostbusters or “training for a marathon” or getting back from George Clooney’s wedding, Bill and Dave have some damn good fun.

Hopefully, Bill’s on a few more times before Dave leaves The Late Show.

Richard Ayoade Just Came Out With a Book Where He Interviews Himself “Ayoade on Ayoade”

Richard Ayoade, director of Submarine and The Double, has just released a book, Ayoade on Ayoade.

It contains several interviews of the director, which is a sort of book that has become commonplace in the cinematic canon. However, they are interviews conducted by Ayoade himself of, as the title suggests, himself.

On top of that a description of the book says, “Over ten brilliantly insightful and often erotic interviews, Ayoade examines himself fully and without mercy, leading a breathless investigation into this once-in-a-generation visionary”.

So, naturally, we’re on board for this ride that Ayoade is taking us on of himself. Get a copy of Ayoade on Ayoade here.

Headed for a release on Dec. 12th after snagging a $12.5 million bid from Paramount Pictures, Chris Rock’s Top Five is one of the most highly anticipated comedies, if not movies in general, for the rest of 2014 (and the beginning of 2015 for that matter).

The trailer has just got posted online and shows promise for what could be a tighter, less complicated version of Funny People that’s written, directed, and starring the one and only Chris Rock.

Give it a watch and see for yourself.

While you’re waiting for The Best Show to return, there’s something to make that wait even more enticing than it already is.

The Best Show’s Tom Scharpling and Jon Wurster are coming out with a 16 CD boxed set “culled from the vaults of WFMU—the world’s most acclaimed free-form radio station—comes over 20 hours of mind-bending, hilarious phone calls between the renowned comedy duo of Tom Scharpling & Jon Wurster”.

There’s also “a 108-page hardcover book with cover art by Joe Matt that features essays by Patton Oswalt, Julie Klausner, Damian Abraham (lead singer of F*cked Up) and Best Show associate producer Michael Lisk (aka A.P. Mike), a definitive interview with Scharpling & Wurster by Jake Fogelnest, notes on the evolution and inspiration behind each bit written by Scharpling & Wurster, a USB drive with all of the calls plus 4 hours of bonus material, a fold-out map of Newbridge, Philly Boy Roy & Timmy von Trimble Paper Dolls, postcards, and temporary tattoos with The Best Show catch-phrases.”

If you pre-order from Numero Group, you’ll get a piece of a smashed phone that Wurster used to make the first Rock, Rot & Rule call along with a certificate of authenticity.

Don’t think this is all real? See Scharpling and Wurster all explain it themselves and smash the phone.

Then, put your pre-order in at Numero Group that ships out March of 2015 because you know you want this and that piece of the phone.

NBC Cancelled Female Driven 1960s Space Race Comedy “Mission Control” Before Premiere

(via The Hollywood Reporter)

Though there seems to be a little bit of a trend of space themed comedies these days with Paul Feig‘s Other Space for Yahoo, Cracked‘s Starship Icarus, NBC has jumped off any sort of potential bandwagon that there would be by canceling Mission Control from Gary Sanchez Productions ahead of its premiere.

Krysten Ritter was set to star, but locking down the rest of the cast apparently proved too difficult for NBC to want to move forward with the show.

It’s unfortunate as a workplace comedy set at NASA’s Mission Control in the 60s with Ritter as the star definitely sounded pretty great to us. Maybe it’ll get revived somewhere else as that is definitely a trend in TV these days.

The release of Megan Amram’s science “textbook”, Science… For Her!, is less than a month away at Nov. 4th, so Amram enlisted the help of Nick Offerman, Steve Agee, and Rich Fulcher, director Payman Benz, and a parody of Olivia Newton John’s Let’s Get Physical to promote the book.

Amy Poehler Producing Another Comedy Project at NBC and Joins Legendary’s Digital Division with “Smart Girls At The Party”

For quite some time, Amy Poehler has been doing quite well for herself or, as some might say, killing it.

This week has been a particularly good display of that as Legendary Entertainment acquired Poehler’s Smart Girls At The Party and she is set to produce another comedy at NBC along with Aisha Muharrar.

So, there will be even more Smart Girls At The Party content to be made and a comedy project following an agnostic woman who has to deal with the inheritance of a church.

These two announcements come on top of the release of Poehler’s book Yes Please, executive producing the second season of Broad City, and probably a million other amazing things that she has wonderfully hidden up her sleeve.

CBS Launches “CBS All Access” Subscription Streaming Service

It’s only a matter of time before TV and the Internet merge completely. One can already see the signs as HBO finally setting to offer a stand alone streaming option marks the already inevitable shift of television online.

CBS is now joining in on this movement with the launching of CBS All Access, which offers thousands of episodes of your favorite CBS programs as well as new episodes the very next day.

We hope this makes watching something like a comedian’s set on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson or an entire interview from The Late Show with David Letterman after it has aired a lot easier (i.e. being able to watch it all) than it currently is.

For now, CBS is offering a one week free trial of CBS All Access.

Cameron Crowe Romantic Comedy with Bill Murray, Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone Set for 2015 Release

Once there was a script for a project that writer/director Cameron Crowe was writing called Deep Tiki, which was retooled for a cast of Bill Murray, Bradley Cooper, and Emma Stone. It’s been in the works, and untitled, for well over a year and can be best most fully described, so far as we can tell, as a “Hawaiian rocket launch rom com”.

If you like all of those elements together (and we really can’t imagine why you wouldn’t), be happy to know that this film is set for release in May 2015 according to Crowe in an interview with Variety.

We wouldn’t be surprised if a fun trailer with rockets, great music, Murray’s classic face, all against the Hawaii sunset is coming relatively soon.
