We’re all sad that Oprah left our afternoons empty and cold and hopeless and depressing and lacking joy. But the good news is that there are tons of people who are perfectly capable replacements for the Queen of Daytime.

1) Due to underwhelming traffic, we, here at the Comedy Bureau, got the hint, so the Morning Debriefing is back (though it will probably never be posted in the official “morning”).

2) The Los Angeles Comedy Festival is accepting submissions for their 10th edition taking place this fall.  More details to follow soon.

3) Check out comedy podcasting hub Earwolf’s new site! A fantastic thing got pretty damn fantastic!!!

4) Kyle Cease has a new video to push a self-help brand of comedy on his “Wake the Hell Up Comedy Tour” [via Punchline].  "He’s doing something pretty new in comedy.  He’s using it to get a point across.“-testimonial from girl who has obviously not watched Bill Hicks or any number of comedians.  It’s only a matter of time until a parody comes out.

5) Brand new to Conan: The Pardo Patrol.  Let’s hope this becomes an actual regular segment on Conan.

6) Behind the story of Camp Crystal Lake, you’ll find Tom McCaffrey, Barry Rothbart, Matt Fulchiron keeping the camp open despite Jason killing more people.  This video should be the next installment/re-boot of the Jason franchise.

7) Puddin’-"Dominos”

3) If you’ve never checked out Channel 101 in LA, here’s why, amongst several reasons, why you shouldn’t miss it; EVERYTHING.

Everything (Ep. 17) from dannyjelinek on Vimeo.

4) Punchline Magazine Review of Midnight in Paris (I/the Comedy Bureau wrote this).

5) Tips for the Open Mic Run? If you have any tips on open mics around the LA area that give around 5 min. of stage time and don’t charge an outrageous minimum to support the venue, please e-mail thecomedybureau@gmail.com

6) OK, as far as comedy flyers go, this is one of the best I’ve seen this year (anyone thinking about making a Five Guys spin off, don’t).  Also, go see Powerviolence (the show this flyer is for) on Sundays.  It’s unbridled fun.

7) Puddin’ “Enviroment”

8) Don’t bother with questioning.  Of course you would love a summer camp run by comedian Barry Rothbart. So, watch the trailer for Barry Rothbart’s new series Sunshine.

11) Apparently Louis CK dropped in at independent stand-up show, Frolic! and the Hollywood Improv last night while Seinfeld dropped in at the Comedy Store in Picadilly, a popular neighborhood in London. What do these two things have in common. I didn’t get to see them. Damn.

Why You’re Obsession With Getting Booked Is Actually Hurting Your Career

connectedcomedy:

Every once in a while over on the Connected Comedy Facebook page I ask readers what topics they’d like to see me discuss in an article. Typically, about 70% of the comics who respond want to know more about how to get booked more and how to deal with comedy bookers.

It’s become abundantly clear to me that the vast majority of comedians out there are completely obsessed with the booking process and see it as the key to growing their career.

But here’s the thing: I think they’re wrong.

Not only do I think they’ve completely overrated the importance getting booked in growing their careers, I think their obsession with getting booked is actually having a negative impact on their career growth.

Here’s why…

If comics spent more time working on their acts than worrying about booking more shows, they will only get better comedically and, in effect, book more shows (eventually, without asking).

Katie Crown-Tip of the Hat-6/4

June 5, 2011
Uncategorized
canada, comedienne, just for laughs montreal, katie crown, profile, scooby doo

The Comedy Bureau “Tips Its Hat” this week to KATIE CROWN.

Not to be presumptuous, but it’s almost near impossible to not laugh, smile, and end up adoring Katie Crown if you catch her performing.  Instantly likeable from her first laugh at herself when she takes the stage, Crown is an original and endearing type of hilarious that’s so rare and refreshing to see, especially amongst a predominating trend of comedy that’s dark, personal, and/or visceral.

Katie owns up to her “prankster” label, though she makes sure her performances are absolutely all in good spirits.  She doesn’t go out into the audience, pick on people in the front row, but does take everyone on a wonderfully absurd ride through her observations of a world that she’s made up.  Her bits touch upon such things like Scooby Doo in OB/GYN check ups and imagining that people are singing in conversation like a real life musical.  Yes, there is plenty of goofy singing in Katie’s act, but it’s all mixed together in such a way that’s hysterical with no regard to age.

Having earned some comedy stripes from appearing at the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal and opening for the likes of Zach Galifianakis, Paul F. Tompkins, and Neil Hamburger, Crown has made her way to Los Angeles, delighting people one room at a time.  I caught her at the always superb Josh & Josh Show wandering through her delightfully bizarre material.  Throughout her set, as mentioned before, Katie has such an immediate affinity with the crowd that she could be silly as she wanted and the crowd literally loved it.

I remember one guy (and though everything written her might suggest otherwise, it’s not me) wandering around after the show looking for Crown so he could say that he had fell in love with her.

If you’ve never seen Katie Crown before on account of her only recently transplanting to Los Angeles from Canada, please check her calendar frequently at KatieCrown.com.  In fact, you can start to tomorrow night at Powerviolence at the Complex in Hollywood 8:30PM for completely free.
