Aziz Ansari To Be Honored by Smithsonian Magazine with American Ingenuity Award

The Smithsonian really liked Master of None.

The revered institution of The Smithsonian has their Smithsonian Magazine annually honor people with their American Ingenuity Awards.

For the category of performing arts, Aziz Ansari and his show Master of None will be the receiving one of these awards.

To give perspective, other awards recipients include astrophysicists that were the first to observe gravitational waves and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.

Keegan-Michael Key Will Host This Year’s Gotham Awards

The infectious high energy of Keegan-Michael Key could potentially be a great go to for awards hosting. We’ll be curious to see if he breaks out any of his Key & Peele characters.

We’ll have to see how that plays out when The Gotham Awards happens at the end of the month.

The Weather Channel to Have a ‘Chill Marathon’ on Election Day

Taking cues from The Puppy Bowl that airs opposite The Super Bowl, The Weather Channel is looking to be your refuge on November 8th, which sure might be one of the most insane days in U.S. politics in this century.

From 12PM PDT to 9PM PDT next Tuesday, clouds, rainbows, smooth jazz, “autumn splendor”, and more look to soothe citizens of America on The Weather Channel after potentially hearing about Trump poll watchers incite violence like Trump supporters do at their rallies, unending flows of misogyny, racism, xenophobia, etc.

Between this, The Chris Gethard Show Election Special, Stephen Colbert’s Live Election Night: Democracy’s Series Finale: Who’s Going to Clean Up This Sh*t?, and Hillary winning, America can hopefully have a great night next Tuesday.

Chris Garcia Is Developing Sitcom Based on His Life and Family with Fox and The Lonely Island

Chris Garcia’s story and comedy being put into a TV series is long overdue.

Son to Cuban immigrants that made it out of Cuba into the U.S. despite the odds being against them, Chris Garcia has become a truly wonderful comedian.

Over the last couple of years, he’s really delved into his identity as a Cuban American and you’ve probably heard some of the stories on NPR, WTF with Marc Maron, or his fantastic stand-up album, Laughing and Crying at the Same Time.

Now, Chris might get to tell the story of his life and his family trying to make it on television over at Fox thanks to The Lonely Island. It being Fox and The Lonely Island and Garcia, we can see how this project could potentially be like no other family sitcom you’ve ever seen before (that’s a really good thing).

Giphy Has Created a Very Easy Way to Turn Your Vines Into .GIFs

Very smart move, Giphy.

While the Internet is mourning being too little too late for the shuttering of the six-second looped video app Vine, know that all that viral content isn’t going to fall by the wayside.

.GIF sharing service Giphy has capitalized on the moment and developed a “Vine importer” that will allow all of your clever six second visual jokes live on, sound included, well beyond Vine in their same basic form.

Thank goodness this exist as we’re pretty sure the Library of Congress hasn’t gotten around to archiving Vine videos like they have tweets.

Stan Against Evil’s First Episode Now Streaming at IFC

Here’s a nice Halloween treat from IFC.

Dana Gould’s horror comedy Stan Against Evil doesn’t premiere until Wednesday, November 2nd, but IFC was nice enough and timely enough to give the first episode to us all on Halloween.

Watch it at your convenience at the link above.

Mike Schur Just Got Another Comedy Project, Actionland, in Development at NBC, This Time with Matt Hubbard

NBC really doesn’t want to let Mike Schur make another hit show anywhere else.

Again, Mike Schur hasn’t gotten The Good Place isn’t even picked for a second season yet and he already has Landlords in development at NBC with Matt Murray and, on top of that, just gotten to develop another comedy project with another Matt.

Actionland, written by Matt Hubbard, will be a workplace comedy set at below average amusement park in Arizona. There’s a lot of potential to be had there, especially since the staff of amusement parks have proven to be a solid catalyst for comedy.

If these two projects go to series, Schur could be in rare company by having more than a few sitcoms on network TV at the same time.

Already, NBC Is Developing Another Comedy with Mike Schur and Matt Murray

Mike Schur’s The Good Place hasn’t even gotten renewed yet, but NBC what’s to double down on being in the Schur/Murray business.

Matt Murray, who has worked with Schur on Parks and Recreation, The Good Place, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, is writing the script for this project that focuses of a couple that becomes first time landlords. It currently has a put pilot commitment and is simply called “Landlords”.

Perhaps, this bodes well for The Good Place? If so, 2017 might be another banner year for Schur and co.

Diablo Cody, Simon Cowell, and Ian Brennan Are Developing a Synchronized Swimming Comedy at Fox

The minds behind Young Adult, many a reality competition series, and Scream Queens will be joining forces to make a sitcom about synchronized swimming.

All those names and elements are intriguing and the fact that Fox has gotten on board for a put pilot is more encouraging considering their penchant for high concept comedies.

Let’s hope following an anti-social synchronized swimming champ does a little better than The Bronze did in theaters.

Vine Will Be Discontinued as Part of Twitter Restructuring

For now, you can still watch your favorite Vine videos. How long that will last has yet to be determined.

Vine, the platform that allowed six second videos to be made, uploaded, and shared spawned a whole new subgenre of comedy, allowing for what could be considered “visual one-liners”. However, the arrival of Snapchat, Instagram Stories, Periscope, etc. must have made it difficult for Vine to be as popular as it once was.

So, Vine is getting a pink slip though the app and all of the Vines, as mentioned above, are currently still online.

We have no doubt that many of the most celebrated Vines will live on in .gifs and Vine compilations, but we’re not sure about the likelihood that something exactly like it will take it’s place in the near future.

ABC Developing Sitcom Starring Carol Burnett That Amy Poehler Is Executive Producing

Burnett and Poelher working together on anything could almost be good to be a whole pitch for show.

Living comedy legend Carol Burnett (and for how much the term “legend” is thrown around these days in comedy, it should noted that Burnett is a legitimate comedy legend) is aiming to return to TV. This multi cam project will star her as an eccentric old actress that allows a family to live in their dream home/her house so long as they live with her until she passes. Amy Poehler and her Paper Kite Productions have been attached in the executive producing capacity, undoubtedly giving this show’s development path instantly have more heat.

At this stage, ABC has made a put pilot commitment requiring a monetary penalty if they don’t air the pilot. Given Poehler’s involvement, we are intensely curious to see how Carol Burnett will be plugged into a 21st century sitcom and if it’ll be as charming as when Burnett had her own show with her own name in the title.

With all of that said, we’re getting a kind of PG-retooling-of-the-classic-drama-Sunset-Boulevard vibe. Hopefully, that’ll prove to be a good thing.

So, as Tradition Dictates, Trump and Clinton Have to “Poke Fun” at Each Other at The Al Smith Dinner

So, as Tradition Dictates, Trump and Clinton Have to “Poke Fun” at Each Other at The Al Smith Dinner

If you thought that the line between the presidential debates and the SNL parodies of the debates this year were already more blurred than ever, this will probably reach a whole new level of life and art imitating each other.

During an election year, it’s customary tradition for the candidates to politely roast each other while only being separated by the seat of the Cardinal of New York, Timothy Dolan as part of the big charity event for children in poverty known as The Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Center.

It’s a private white tie dinner being held tonight and thus you won’t get to see it on TV. Still, rest assured that you’ll probably hear about it on social media this evening. One can only imagine that Clinton will want to come off cooler than her Pokemon GO joke (and she could do so by doing any of the thousands of jokes leveled at Trump over the last couple of decades) and Trump, having already stooped to childish and grotesque behavior in the debates, will likely espouse his godawful privilege even more with some tasteless one-liners and offensive act outs.

That being said, the team at Full Frontal with Samantha Bee “got a fax from Julian Assange” that shows “Hillary’s speech/set list”.

Hulu Developing ‘Unhinged’ from Casey Wilson & June Diane Raphael

One way or another, we will get another TV show with Casey Wilson and June Diane Raphael involved.

You’ve seen Wilson and Raphael go at each other in Hot Wives and now they have teamed up along with accomplished veteran comedy writer/producer John Riggi (30 Rock, The Larry Sanders Show) to make a show following a suburban middle-aged woman, potentially played by Casey, who has had enough with society’s roles for women and opts to lash out.

Called Unhinged, it would pair up nicely with Difficult People over at Hulu.

HarmonQuest Renewed for Season 2 at Seeso and Has “Uncovered” 38 Lost Scenes

Seeso, wisely we think, is staying their course of as-off-beat-as-can-be comedy programming.

Just announced today, HarmonQuest, where Dan Harmon and friends play their own humorous fantasy role playing game, just got picked up for a second season at NBC’s comedy exclusive streaming service, Seeso, for next year. On top of that, 38 additional scenes from season 1 will be coming in soon on November 3rd.

If you’re still waiting for Seeso to have enough to pay $3.99 a month for it, it’s clear that it probably surpassed that awhile ago.

CBS Developing Comedy Based on ‘Totally Laime’ from Elizabeth Laime and Tami Sagher

Podcasts continue to not only stick around, but are getting mined more and more for TV adaptations.

Elizabeth Laime has built a mini-podcast empire from The Totally Laime podcast and has now gotten to the much coveted next level with developing a show based on her audio dispatches.

Tami Sagher, who you probably saw in Don’t Think Twice this summer, will be writing the project with her and we can only hope that this makes far in the development process to offer some more contrast considering CBS’ new comedy line-up this fall is heavy on white male leads that have to put up with annoying millennials in Kevin Can Wait, The Great Indoors, and Man With a Plan.

YouTube Orders ‘Game Grumps’ from Dan Harmon’s Starburns Industries, a Comedy About Competitive Gaming

Whether it be network television, cable, streaming services, and now YouTube Red, Dan Harmon has almost done a show on almost every place where you can watch TV.

YouTube announced their series pick-ups today, which includes series orders of projects from Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, accomplished director Doug Liman, and, most interesting to us, Harmon’s Starburns Industries.

It’ll be a scripted comedy following the players in an eSports league called Game Grumps. Perhaps, it’ll be a tinge like Rick and Morty playing Roy…

That Tracy Morgan Series Co-Created by Jordan Peele and John Carcieri Is Going to Series at  TBS

Take a look at that TBS programming line-up again and you just might be surprised (again) with what they’ve done this year.

Originally at FX, Tracy Morgan was set to star in this comedy that would have him star as a man released from prison after serving 15 years, then have to adapt to a Brooklyn that’s much different than he remembers. FX passed on this show from Jordan Peele and Vice Principals co-executive producer and writer, John Carcieri, but TBS made a sure to get a series order before the show landed somewhere else.

Remember when the only thing that you probably watched on TBS was Conan? TBS looks like they’re doing a pretty good job in making sure that doesn’t happen again.
