This very riveting documentary short Laughing Matters: The Funny Business of Being Sad from SoulPancake, Funny or Die, director Mike Bernstein, and producer/editor Georgia Koch shows how depression has woven its way through the lives of many of your favorite comedic writers, actors, and stand-ups and how they’ve managed to cope.

Included in the doc are harrowing stories of such celebrated funny people Chris Gethard, Sarah Silverman, Rachel Bloom, Baron Vaughn, Neal Brennan, Aparna Nancherla, Rainn Wilson, Sara Benincasa, Riki Lindhome, Wayne Brady, and Anna Akana.

It is indeed #WorldMentalHealthDay and it’s especially worth watching today, but how Laughing Matters effectively navigates the thread of everyone journey with depression, anxiety, and more in this doc is pretty amazing and worth a watch at any time. It’s yet another reminder of how prolific issues with mental health are and why it’s important to take care of it and to know that you’re not alone in how you feel (even though it might feel that way)

You can (and should) watch it here.

Though the thumbnail here says that “comedy won’t save you”, we will say that comedy has done a lot to shine a light on the importance of mental health via the struggles of many a comedian (though it’s not a pre-requisite to be depressed to do comedy) with anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, bipolar disorder, etc.

SoulPancake and Funny or Die are continuing with that notion with this documentary It’s Not That Funny featuring Sarah Silverman, Chris Gethard, Wayne Brady, Sara Benincasa, and more talking frankly about how they’ve managed and dealt with their mental health while in comedy.

See a bit of it for yourself with this trailer.

We’re guessing if you’re a fan of the Hilarious World of Depression, this will be right up your alley. Look for It’s Not That Funny to release soon via SoulPancake and Funny or Die.

Thanks to One, Sara Benincasa, Neil Gaiman Will Perform a Live Reading of The Cheesecake Factory Menu If $500K Is Raised for the United Nations Refugee Agency

1) This is real.

3) They’ve already raised $68,707
4) Here’s Neil Gaiman performing a commencement speech in case you forgot how lovely his voice sounds.
5) Here’s the Cheesecake Factory menu in case you forgot how massive and indulgent it is.
6) They’re trying to reach the goal of $500,000 by June 20th, World Refugee Day.
7) Again, this is real.
8) Donate to this delightfully silly and great thing here on CrowdRise.

Tim Kaine, the fluent Spanish, very affable VP pick of Hillary Clinton, has been received quite nicely by many Democrats.

In fact, it has inspired one notable comedian/author Sara Benincasa to write and publish fan fiction based on Sara’s idea of Tim Kaine being “ the world’s nicest dad who just wants you to stay safe and have a nice time out there”, which she is aptly calling Tim Kaine Is Your Nice Dad.

Half of the proceeds from this book will go to Great Expectations, a VA non profit that helps foster kids go from community college to the workforce.

If the idea of Tim Kaine fan fic sounds good to you, you can get it on Kindle here.

The great Sara Benincasa has her latest novel, D.C. Trip, now in stores. In addition to her branching out quite well as an author from being an accomplished storyteller and comedian, Sara is now branching out a little more as she is adapting this story of a rookie youngster HS teacher taking his students to our nation’s capitol.

Given Sara’s style of storytelling, we’ll be excited to see what she comes up with as a feature based on this book.

So, knowing all that you can and should get D.C. Trip before it becomes a major motion picture so you can, at the very least, brag about comparing the book and the movie.
