Joy Ride Looks to Be the Raunchiest R-Rated Comedy of 2023 (That Happens to Be About Adoption)

March 17, 2023
News
ashley park, joy ride, red band trailer, sabrina wu, sherry cola, stephanie hsu

Between This Is Us, Trying, and Blue Bayou, there is an uptick in stories about adoption in TV and movies as of late, though, as you might notice they’re either incredibly maudlin or saccharine.

That’s going to change this year come July 7th as Teresa Hsiao, Adele Lim, and Cherry Chevapravatdumrong‘s R-rated transcontinental road-trip buddy comedy, Joy Ride, will hit theaters. Ashley Park plays an adoptee that assembles Sherry Cola, Stephanie Hsu, and Sabrina Wu, all play kind-of life long friends, to help her find her birth mother on the other side of the world. What ensues is a Hangover/Bridesmaids-esque gauntlet of everything going spectacularly awry as one can see and enjoy in this first official red band trailer, just released today.

Joy Ride has the makings of an R-rated comedy of 2023, especially with it being slotted right after the 4th of July, but also offer up a film we haven’t seen before, a big studio adult comedy that sports an all-Asian top billed cast that hinges on an actual adoption story (versus something like Elf, which is probably the best adoptee comedy to date) and is chock full of blue humor.

It’s so damn intriguing where this Joy Ride might take us. Take your first look at what that might be with the Joy Ride red band trailer here.

Here’s a Red Band Trailer for Lena Dunham’s Latest “Sharp Stick”

June 24, 2022
News
lena dunham, red band trailer, sharp stick

It has been 5 years since HBO bid farewell to Lena Dunham’s Girls and that same amount of time since there has been something to hit the big or small screen from Dunham. In many ways, she was a crucial part in the arrival of this wave of dramedy that we’re all still very much riding and bringing a new level of gravitas to explicitly sexual material in a comedy series.

Sharp Stick, a brand new original movie from Dunham, is both a return for Lena to being at the helm and a big screen. With a grounded, yet organically funny take on sex and relationships in mind, Lena might have made her most daring work to date following the other woman taking part in an extramarital affair.

Take a gander for yourself at what’s to come with Sharp Stick’s red band trailer here.

Then, look for Sharp Stick in NY & LA on Jul. 29th and across the country on Aug. 5th.

Solar Opposites Releases a “Super Red Band” Trailer for Season 2

March 25, 2021
News

To entice viewers, some shows will release a red band trailer that is meant for adults only and is thus, usually released only online or, perhaps, with an R-rated movie in theaters (that thing we used to do so long ago).

Solar Opposites is the sort of a show that has enough explicit content to warrant a red band trailer and they have indeed released one. However, it would seem that they have gone above and beyond during their time at SXSW Online 2021 and unveiled a “super red band trailer” that really goes to town with language and gore. The alien family of Solar Opposites that have been stranded on Earth and cause chaos in the meantime really do one-up themselves for this super red band trailer (which might be the first of its kind?)

Watch it here, then look for season 2 of Solar Opposites to start on Hulu this Fri. Mar. 26th.

Little Monsters Red Band Trailer Promises a Fresh Take in Zom-Coms

Well, it looks like there’s a new fun zombie comedy or “zom com” coming to town later this year.

Joining the ranks of Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland, and Anna and the Apocalypse will be an Aussie entry into the subgenre, Little Monsters. Writer/director Abe Forsythe takes a new angle into the zombie movie by following a group of kids on a field trip with Alexander England, Lupita Nyong’o and Josh Gad when the arrival of zombies make things go very, very wrong.

It looks like a good bit of dark fun as you can see in Little Monsters’ red-band trailer here. If you’re digging it, start looking for it on November 15th.

Olivia Wilde’s Directorial Debut “Booksmart” Could Be This Year’s Blockers

Blockers was a pleasant surprise last year as a heartfelt, yet still widely appealing teen comedy for these times.

Enter Olivia Wilde’s first feature as a director Booksmart with a script written by Sarah Haskins, Susanna Fogel, Katherine Silberman, Emily Halpern, which very well could be that kind of film for 2019. It has overtones of Blockers and Superbad, and, from the looks of this red band trailer, a lot of promise like those predecessors. The duo of stars Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein seem have a very charming, yet grounded chemistry and the trailer doesn’t seem to be giving all the best set pieces and jokes away (unlike so many teen comedies these days).

If you’re into it, look for Booksmart to start rolling out in theaters at the end of May on Memorial Day Weekend.

Little Hours Red Band Trailer Plays Like Spiritual Sequel to Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Little Hours is a raunchy, unfiltered comedy set in medieval times juxtaposing the sort of comedy that might star Alison Brie, Dave Franco, Aubrey Plaza, Kate Micucci, John C. Reilly, Molly Shannon, and Fred Armisen, but have nun, king, and peasant costumes.

That being the case of writer/director Jeff Baena’s latest work, you can see in the trailer how this could almost be the origin story of the “perilous” Castle Anthrax in Monty Python and The Holy Grail.

Also, we loved that the Catholic League calls it, “Pure trash,” and that pull quote is featured in this trailer.

So, look for Little Hours to hit theaters on June 30th.

Please Watch Red Band Trailer for Martin McDonagh’s “Three  Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” ASAP

Playwright, filmmaker, writer Martin McDonagh, who has mastered how to explore the darkest corners of humanity and still make it funny (see In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths for proof), has a new film coming out, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

It has every bit of pure, bleakly dark comic punch that McDonagh is famous for as well as one of his muses, Sam Rockwell.

We really want the red band trailer to floor you kind of like it did us, so we won’t say much more. However, you should really take note how great Frances McDormand is in a role of “giving absolutely zero f*cks”.

Watch it here and then keep a close eye for a release sometime this year.

2016 has brought a handful of really wonderful coming-of-age dramedies. Namely, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Sing Street, and Morris From America have been fantastic movies perfectly balancing adolescence, drama, and humor.

From the looks of this brand new trailer, the upcoming The Edge of Seventeen might just be part of that group.

We’ll see if that’s true when it hits theaters on November 18th.

The Red Band Trailer for “Swiss Army Man” Show Farts and Boners Like You’ve Never Seen Before

Much controversy has come from the divisive Swiss Army Man. It’s use of Danielle Radcliffe’s farts (specifically used to help Paul Dano get home) and other such things that have been usually relegated to banal straight-to-DVD comedies hit the wrong nerve for many when it screened at Sundance. For others, it was a one-of-a-kind, amazing vision.

For our money, this new red band trailer gives credence to the latter (even with the featuring of unusual boners).

If you’re on the Swiss Army Man train, look for it in theaters on June 24th.

Everybody Wants Some, Richard Linklater’s spiritual sequel to Dazed and Confused looks like it will be every bit as fun based off this new red band trailer.

On top of whatever you’ve already got concocted for April 1st, you might want to add seeing Everybody Wants Some on its limited release date to the list. The release expands wide on April 8th if you are indeed to busy pulling pranks then.

Trailer for Season 2 of “Man Seeking Woman” Promises More Metaphorical Craziness

The conceit of FXx’s Man Seeking Woman is that all the metaphors that people compare every aspect of love, dating, marriage, relationships, etc. actually come to life making for some pretty trippy scenes that really resonate with folks.

Season 2, while it has a new arc with the main character Josh, is making good on that dynamic, which will include a horny Santa.

Watch all of this in the red band trailer here, then look for the premiere on FXx on Wed. Jan. 6th.

This time, it’s nostalgic… sort of.

In this new Vacation movie that straddles the line between sequel and reboot, Ed Helms attempts to relive the very first vacation to Walley World with his own wife, played by Christina Applegate, and kids. So far, it seems to be nicely self-aware part of the franchise, including a cameo from Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo, that so many of us enjoy these days.

Of course, this being 2015, a few more things can go wrong to the point where you can make a red band trailer.

Watch the red band trailer, that might just have earned its red band from Chris Hemsworth alone, here.

Vacation is set for theatrical release July 29th.

Amy Schumer is putting her own stamp on the romantic comedy genre as the writer and star of Trainwreck. With Judd Apatow directing as well as Bill Hader, Vanessa Bayer, and LeBron James co-starring (as well as some nice cameos from Colin Quinn, Dave Attell, and Tilda Swinton), Schumer definitely is going to bring hew own raunchier persona to the normal genre tropes. It’s scheduled for release on July 17th and has the potential to be a hit R-rated comedy of the summer.

The Interview Expands to Cable and Satellite VOD and Gets a Red Band Trailer

The Interview did get released on Christmas day and is slowly making a roll out across various platforms with its massive VOD success. So, satellite and cable providers are now offering it up on their VOD services starting today (via Deadline) and it’ll be interesting to see how much money the film will continue to rake in from VOD alone.

A red band trailer was also uploaded today and you can clearly see how ridiculous it is that this movie, with all the expletives and sexual innuendos, caused an international incident.

It should be noted that anything resulting from the release of the movie by the Sony hackers has yet to happen if anything was going to happen at all.

Yesterday, a red band trailer was posted that gives us all a better picture of what North Korea is getting so steamed over as well as the duo, reminiscent of when they teamed up in Pineapple Express, that Rogen and Franco are playing that are tasked with assassinating Kim Jong-Un.

So, maybe they don’t like all the rampant sexual innuendo?
