The Unbirthday Show is the latest show taking up the mantle in the grand LA comedy tradition of backyard comedy. Yes, the LA comedy scene has been doing outdoor comedy way before we had to (you best bet that we take advantage of the weather out here).

Curated, produced, and hosted by Brooke Finegold, she dresses up a Silverlake backyard for a fun, fantastical comedy show full of LA favorites and up and coming stars. This latest edition of The Unbirthday Show is set for Sat. May 29th at 7:30PM PT (Doors 6:30PM) and has quite the fine line-up of:

Brodie Reed
Danielle Perez
Hannah Pilkes
Harper Rose
Lara Beitz
Matt LeGrande
Rebecca Rush

Tickets are only $10 and you can (and should) go get ’em here.

SXSW Online 2021 Announces a Comedy Line-Up Featuring the Some of America’s Most Renowned Comedy Clubs

It is not too far from this time last year that the devastating news that SXSW was going to be cancelled was going to be delivered. Along with its cancellation came the nixing of a wide-ranging program of live comedy that had become one of Texas’ biggest annual comedy events.

As we are still in the thick of the COVID-19 pandemic, SXSW is going entirely virtual for 2021. They did not want to be deterred from not only highlighting the best in comedy wherever the festival could find it, but note how truly special it is and help it survive through its various “homes” and “family members”.

Thusly, SXSW Comedy is opting to have exclusive performances (done with strict COVID-19 safety protocols) from the some of the most hallowed comedy clubs in the country including Acme Comedy Co in Minneapolis, Dynasty Typewriter and the Hollywood Improv in Los Angeles, Gotham Comedy Club in NYC, and Zanies Comedy Club in Chicago with the celebrated comedy stylings of Beth Stelling, Reggie Watts, Erin Jackson, Monroe Martin III, Clayton English, Chris Porter, Emma Willmann, Dan Soder, Joel Kim Booster, and Matty Ryan. Doug Loves Movies, Matt Besser’s improv4humans, selections from The Creek & The Cave’s Bring Back Laughs will also be part of this marvelous cross-country virtual SXSW comedy round-up.

This should be a momentous occasion coming on a year of lockdown in America and how we have all endured and comedy is still going (and will hopefully keep surviving) despite being challenged like it has never been challenged before.

This year’s online edition of SXSW is set for Mar. 16th-20th and you can get more info on their comedy offerings as well as buy/register for a pass here.

When it comes to making a holiday TV special, you could just have a bunch of great comedians/storytellers share their holiday memories/do bits (and some stripped down version of a Christmas standard) or you could have jaunty recipes and tips for the perfect holiday party.

Thanks to Jay Larson, we could have our Mid-Century Modern Gingerbread House (a real thing that Larson makes in this special) and eat it too (i.e. enjoy the comedic stylings of Jesus Trejo, Debra DiGiovanni, Dan Soder, Lara Beitz, and Nick Thune and music of Suzanne Santo). Always the crafty, clever one, Larson made an all-in-one sort of half-hour holiday special that celebrates (and subtly roasts) this time of year.

Please enjoy it at your leisure, for free, here.

Usually, stand-up comedy done in the round is done so in gigantic spaces, a stadium, auditorium, etc. and requires a larger than life personality.

This very special evening, simply called Surrounded, at the Hollywood Improv Comedy Lab will transform an already intimate venue into an even more intimate one by putting the stage smack dab in the center of the room and having the audience sit all the way around. Also, you’ll get to see the rising stars with a line-up of Mike Falzone, Lara Beitz, Jordan Perry, and Rick Glassman as well as some newly minted JFL New Faces (Hannah Einbinder and Shapel Lacey).

Tickets for Surrounded are $12 (plus 2 item min.) and you can (and should) get them here.
