Pick of the Day: Syd Can Cook Holiday Extravaganza 12/20

December 10, 2020
News
comedy livestream, cooking show, syd can cook, Sydnee Washington

Many comedy livestreams have come and gone in 2020. The same goes for comedians attempting to cook during a livestream for humorous effect. Yet, one of the standout shows in this arena that have stood the test of COVID-19 time (i.e. what’s time anymore?) is Sydnee Washington’s Syd Can Cook, which is half comedy green room hang/half cooking show/whole “a real good time” that gets us through a bit more of this year.

For the holidays, Sydnee is doing a very special marathon version of Syd Can Cook on Dec. 20th at 4PM PT/7PM ET at @justsydbw on Instagram. You know that she’ll be going strong on IG Live w/Karolena Theresa through her holiday feast no matter what folks are putting up in the thread and there will be a grand virtual procession of special guests the whole way through.

Per Sydnee herself, “PLEASE SUGGEST WHAT YALL WANT TO SEE US MESS UP, I MEAN COOK” @justsydbw.

Please Enjoy Jena Friedman’s Darkly Funny Cooking Show “The Joy of Quarantine”

During quarantine, many comedians have turned to doing their own impromptu cooking shows like Amy Schumer and Iliza Shlesinger, often with help from partners that are actual chefs, or even the bolder Syd Can Cook with Sydnee Washington where she only gets helps from other comedians over Instagram Live.

We’d like to point you to a cooking show with Jena Friedman called The Joy of Quarantine that was shot at the beginning of lockdown. Friedman isn’t a professional chef like in a similar fashion to these other comedian driven cooking shows, but Friedman’s dark sense of humor weaves its way throughout unlike we’ve seen in, well, any cooking show really (who else names a chicken Hitler before gutting it?). Also unique to Friedman’s cooking series is the fact that her boyfriend refuses to have his face shown on camera and she is only using recipes that have Ashkenazi Jewish origins, often doing so for the first time.

It’s our flavor of cooking show as the existential dread is so present in our lives after four months in quarantine.

So, with all of that said, please enjoy Jena’s The Joy of Quarantine here.

Jenny Zigrino and Jen Saunderson Made a Cooking Show Actually Inspired by Jokes with “The Filling Is Mutual”

If you’re a fan of any cooking show where chefs all have to use a weird ingredient, you’ll dig IFC web series The Filling Is Mutual.

Hosts Jenny Zigrino and Jen Saunderson pick out a single joke from their comedian guests’ acts and then dream up a dish based on said joke. Sometimes, it’s delicious and sometimes, it really embodies the joke as much as a recipe can.

In any case, you should watch The Filling Is Mutual and maybe get hungry for ‘dicks in a komono’ or ‘white devil eggs’.

We really think Food Network or the Cooking Channel is really missing out by not having Henry Phillips’ cooking show Henry’s Kitchen on in their late night/early morning programming.

Sure, the recipes may not go according to plan and the chef may seem lonelier than anyone you know, but that’s kind of what makes the show great.

Watch the latest episode that “shows” how to “make” Cherry Bons Bons.

The web series Henry’s Kitchen has been something that we’re thankful for the hysterical Henry Phillips for making every now and again. Sure, we don’t learn how to even make pizza, but man, oh man, do we get a big gut laugh from watching Henry not even close to doing so.

Please watch this latest episode now.
