TCB Debriefing 3/26-3/30/24: Tig Notaro, Kinds of Kindness, House of Laughs, Yannick, Leah Rudick, Beautiful Anonymous

March 30, 2024
News
beautiful anonymous, house of laughs, kinds of kindness, leah rudick, quentin dupieux, world of wonder, yannick, yorgos lanthimos

1. Ever since we saw Tig Notaro share her famous Taylor Dayne story, it was evident to us that Tig has a preternatural ability to milk a moment/incident. What might be a passing occurrence to most, Tig’s unwavering commitment to the life of a bit have both served her hilariously when it’s happening and later on in a story on stage. Hello Again, Tig’s latest special, is a playful reminder that Tig’s bread and butter of drawing every last drop of humor from minutia in her life, with the added flavors of her being married and raising children, is still very tasty and satisfying. Even when Notaro completely reenacts her performance of Hello to Adele at a celebrity shindig, which is quite the set piece for this hour, it’s a great sign that there are many years of Tig’s wondrous mischief to come. Tig Notaro: Hello Again is now streaming on Amazon Prime.

2. Behold, just a taste of a taste of the latest work from the comedy auteur of our time, Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things, The Lobster, The Favourite) with Kinds of Kindness.

3. Drag Queens and brilliant queer comedians (including Abe Farrelly, Cameron Esposito, Danny Franzese, Darienne Lake, Jared Goldstein, Jaymes Mansfield, Jimbo, Joel Kim Booster , and host Lawrence Chaney) are coming together at the intersection of House of Laughs, an upcoming comedy showcase series on the streaming service WOW Presents Plus. It’s such a great line-up that maybe, just maybe you might consider signing up for another streaming service? Take a gander for yourself with the trailer here before House of Laughs premieres on Apr. 2nd.

4. When it comes to the completely absurd, few filmmakers are quite as adept and nuanced (and so damn hilarious) as Quentin Dupeiux (Wrong, Wrong Cops). Looks like he’s staying on that track with YANNICK. Take a look at the unhinged, hysterical chaos that’s in store with this trailer here.

5. Leah Rudick and every side/facet/voice/character of her are on a grand tour of North America. You better not miss out at any of the dates and cities below.

6. Chris Gethard and his all exquisite inclusive creation, the podcast Beautiful Anonymous, are expanding to now have a zine that, as you might have guessed, you could be a part of. It can be art, stories, photos, etc., but it has to be sent through the actual physical mail and, of course, be anonymous.

7. We’ll leave you with this: Indie cinema chain Alamo Drafthouse is up for sale, which should tell you a lot about the limits of taking something independent to the big leagues and trying to keep it sustainable.

TCB Debriefing 11/28/23: Dream Scenario, Verified Stand Up, Eddie Izzard, Beautiful Anonymous

News
beautiful anonymous, chris gethard, dream scenario, eddie izzard, netflix, stand up comedy

1. Kristoffer Borgli’s Dream Scenario makes Nicholas Cage plays one of his best roles yet as an unremarkable professor that everyone starts seeing in their dreams. It’s trippy, terrifying, and all sorts of hysterical, but also cuts very deep into the human desire for belonging and community. Come to think of it, there is a similar vibe to Cage’s Paul Matthews here and his role in The Weather Man where Cage deftly plays someone who wants so badly wants to find meaning/purpose in his life all while believing his remarkable and ignoring how unremarkable he is all the same time. Dream Scenario is playing a limited release at a theater new you.

vvfv                                           v2. Netflix’s version of Premium Blend for 2023, Verified Stand-Up, has arrived, featuring stand-up from TCB faves like Leslie Liao, Vanessa Gonzalez, Robby Hoffman, and Sabrina Wu. We’re pretty sure that much of the showcase series has sets so good that you’ll forgive how out-of-touch the name is.

3. Eddie Izzard is doing Hamlet all by herself in NYC (AP). Being a living legend in comedy, doing stand-up comedy in at least three different languages, running a football/soccer team, running for public office, and regularly running marathons just wasn’t enough for her, was it?

4. Chris Gethard’s Beautiful Anonymous has graduated to a full on subscription service, hence the name Beautiful Anonymous +. After 400 episodes, what started as an idea that Chris thought would bait prank callers has turned into one of the most beautiful, hilarious, enlightening, heartbreaking, comforting tapestries of humanity that has been committed to record. Yes, there is a tier that allows you a better chance at being one of the callers.

5. We’ll leave you with this: Wonder if there will be shows that are marketed as “no-crowd work” for those folks that want to watch stand-up, but, under no circumstance, want to be singled out.

TCB Debriefing 8/16/23: Scott Pilgrim Anime, Beth Stelling Tour, Beautiful Anonymous, Another Barbie Record, Please Don’t Destroy

August 16, 2023
News
barbie, beautiful anonymous, beth stelling, chris gethard, netflix, please don't destroy, scott pilgrim

1. Take your first gander at the Scott Pilgrim anime series coming exclusively to Netflix on Nov. 17th. The voice cast is pretty much the one from the seminal Edgar Wright movie from 2010 and Wright even has a hand in this. So, we’re hoping for the best out of a spin-off/sequel/adaptation that very likely has the highest of expectations right out of the gate.

2. Have Beth Stelling in your town? Do travel. Girl Daddy will live on as one of the great comedy specials of our time.

3. Chris Gethard‘s landmark podcast Beautiful Anonymous is opting to go independent after finishing up its contract with SiriusXM/Earwolf (Variety). While he is sure to score better deals with how much of a juggernaut this particular show is (Gethard has a fan base that’s purely dedicated to Beautiful Anonymous), don’t be surprised if he ends up launching his own network. This is somewhat reminiscent of the route that My Favorite Murder took all those years ago.

4. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has officially become the all time top grossing domestic movie for Warner Bros., no other adjectives needed (Deadline). It’s such a cultural milestone that it’ll very likely be the top grossing movie of the year, again, with no other adjectives or caveats needed.

5. With no idea when exactly the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strikes will end, you also don’t have any idea when SNL will return. Thankfully, there will be a Please Don’t Destroy movie out on Peacock come Nov. 17th.

6. APB to all comedy venues: please have a bar/restaurant right next door if you don’t already have one in your establishment.

Pick of the Day: Beautiful/CONonymous (in NYC) 5/4-5/7

Comedy festivals in such big hubs like LA and NYC are really hard to pull off. There’s the logistics side of it sure, but trying to bring up something different from the veritable festival that incidentally happens on a nightly basis in either city is a true challenge.

Thank goodness comedian/podcaster/raconteur Chris Gethard is back in the full of swing of things and throwing a Beautiful/CONonymous Festival come this May in Brooklyn. It will combine live tapings of Gethard’s signature podcast, Beautiful/Anonymous, as well as stand-up shows (complete with music from Shellshag, the band behind the Beautiful/Anonymous theme), meeting past callers from the podcast, waffles, dancing, and so much more.

Oh yeah, Wyatt Cenac, Joyelle Nicole Jonson, Adam Pally, Emmy Blotnick, Christi Chiello, Nick Fierro, Jo Firestone, Petey DeAbreu, Brittany Carney, Franco Danger, Andrew Fisher, and more comedians will be taking part in this four day comedy and feelings extravaganza too. Beautiful/CONonymous is set to run from Thurs. May 4th-Sun. May 7th at The Bell House (and Gethard watching Contact for the first time at Nitehawk Cinema Williamsburg).

It’s going to be truly something special and, hopefully, an annual thing for NYC comedy for a very long time to come.

You can get individual tickets for $25 a pop or a festival pass for $120. Whatever your choice is, make it fast and go get in on Beautiful/CONonymous here.

Chris Gethard’s Beautiful/Anonymous Debuting as a TV Series at Topic.com

News
beautiful anonymous, chris gethard, topic.com, tv series

Through hundreds of episodes over the years, Chris Gethard has opened up the podcast void to take calls in from anyone and everyone so long as they remain anonymous. The resulting podcast, Beautiful/Anonymous, has become one of the best podcasts, no matter the category, for how endearing, vulnerable, funny, heartwarming, heartbreaking, and unmistakably human it is, has been, and continues to be.

Now, this experiment turned to weekly-salve-for-the-soul is going to get a bit of an upgrade and be its own TV series over at topic.com starting this Thursday. It’ll show Gethard taking calls in a studio and add visuals to accompany and accentuate the calls that will, of course, remain anonymous.

This first episode will be free, courtesy of topic.com, then you’ll have to subscribe for a few bucks a month for the rest (as well as exclusive series from the likes of Maria Bamford, Wyatt Cenac, etc.)

With all of that said, get a sneak peek of the Beautiful/Anonymous TV show with this trailer here.

Here's the trailer for the Beautiful/Anonymous TV show debuting this Thursday. You can watch the first one free at https://t.co/LXhe6VHAp8 – it's gonna be a real good time and I hope you enjoy it. pic.twitter.com/kVPjGeBH8F

Chris Gethard has not only built his career in comedy on his own terms, but Gethard has also built beautiful communities around so much of his work. From his public access days to the cable days of The Chris Gethard Show all the way to his current podcast, Beautiful Anonymous, there is something special about the folks that rally around Gethard and his endeavors. This includes devoted fans as well as other comedians that Chris wants to shine a light on.

Gethard zooms with TCB’s Jake Kroeger for a deep conversation about the crucial importance of community during 2020 in comedy and especially with Beautiful Anonymous, a show uniquely equipped to offer connection at a time in history where we’re more isolated from each other than ever. Also, they dish out “hot” takes on 2021 Grammy nominees for Best Comedy Album and Dave Chappelle not getting paid over streaming of Chappelle’s Show.

It’s not often that Chris Gethard swings by LA, so you really ought not to pass up a chance to see him.

Also, a live taping of his amazing podcast Beautiful Anonymous is another thing that you should make plans for whenever it happens.

On top of all of that, Chris is out promoting his upcoming life advice book, Lose Well, and, at this point, you’re probably going to want to check that out too. It comes out on Oct. 16th, but if you pre-order right now, “Chris will send you a video message, an audio file you can use as your outgoing voicemail message, or he’ll call you directly for a two-minute chat!”

Luckily, you can do all three on Wed., Oct. 24th at Dynasty Typewriter. Tickets are $40, which will include a copy of Lose Well. Get a ticket here ASAP (we have a feeling it might sell out.
