Pick of the Day: Jess Salomon: Sad Witch Album Recording (in NYC) 6/29

One of the most thoughtful (and, of course, undeniably funny) voices in NYC comedy belongs to one, Jess Salomon. Hailing from both Canada and a career as a U.N. war crimes lawyer, Salomon has a knack for keeping a cheery vibe while very cleverly satirizing the world around her. She has become a staple of the NYC comedy scene and a true joy wherever else she plays (certainly, a bright spot on any line-up we’ve seen her in whenever she’s in LA).

Jess will be taping a full length comedy album next week, Sad Witch, at the revered Brooklyn comedy theater, Union Hall, and you really ought to be in attendance for what should be a damn fine hour of stand-up comedy. There are two shows on Thurs. Jun. 29th, 7:30PM & 10PM, with an opening set from DeAnne Smith. Tickets are only $11.55 and you best go get them here and here, respectively right now.

Pick of the Day: Ambush Comedy’s SPECIAL EDITION ALBUM RECORDING SHOW (in NYC) 1/25

Ambush Comedy has been going so long over at Brooklyn’s Two Boots Pizza that one has to wonder how much of an ambush it is anymore. They’ve already recorded one album and, in fact, they’re doing a second taping sesh next Wednesday, Jan. 25th.

Ambush’s very own (and NYC stand-up comedy staples) Josh Johnson, Lucas Connolly, and Brittany Cardwell will be recording audio and video for what has to be one of the tastiest weekly shows in NYC. Per usual, there will be free pizza and beer before the show (while supplies last) and there will be a shindig after.

Oh yeah, you’ll have two chances to be a part of the Ambush Comedy sequel with early show at 8PM and late show at 10PM. Tickets are only $10 and you best go get them here.

 

Pick of the Day: So, That Just Happened with Rachel Kaly, an Album Recording (in NYC) 7/30

Tall tales at a slow burn are Rachel Kaly‘s speciality and there’s almost no one that does it quite like Rachel. It’s always a simultaneously spellbinding, yet laid-back journey that Kaly takes any and all of her audiences on.

The idea that Rachel is going to explicitly do something “weird” she be even more incentive to any level of curiosity to any sort of comedy fan to go out and find out what the hell she has up her sleeves (especially since they’re probably short sleeves on a t-shirt). Rachel is not only doing an album recording in Brooklyn at Gowanus’ secret performance venue Life World, but she’s is going, as we alluded to, “weird”, which will no doubt keep you guessing even as you’re watching the show in the most delightful way possible.

So, That Just Happened with Rachel Kaly is happening this Sat. Jul. 30th at 7PM ET and you better snag your tickets right now. They’re only $7 and it’s probably the best bargain you’re going to get in all of NYC this weekend. Go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Kenice Mobley Records an Album (in NYC) 4/29

In 2021, Kenice Mobley made our 100 Best list and, for 2022, you really ought to not miss whenever she’s going up. That’s actually been true for a long time as Mobley’s deftly crafted comedy has superbly making the rounds in NYC for years now.

If you’re in NYC, you absolutely shouldn’t miss Kenice’s live stand-up album recording. She’ll be doing two tapings on Fri. Apr. 29th, which means it’s probably going to happen and not get canceled or postponed and you’ll have enough to figure out how to get tickets and get to Brooklyn to catch the taping in person.

Tickets are only $10 right now for either the early 7:30PM ET show or the late 10PM ET show and Rohan Padhye and Xazmin Garza will be opening. Go get your tickets before the very likely sell out here.

Pick of the Day: Nore Davis’ 5th Stand-Up Album Recording (in NYC) 1/29

If there was ever an uplifting voice of comfort in comedy that also kept it completely honest and vulnerable and, most importantly, so very hysterically funny, there would be a very tiny short list with the name Nore Davis clearly on it.

For the dozens of times we’ve seen him live and all the hours/specials/albums we’ve heard/seen, Nore has been a constant in offering a rare hopeful outlook threaded through his deftly crafted material and undeniable charm and finesse on stage. His comedic artistry even shined through on Zoom, the rare feat during this time of COVID-19, and he made a thoroughly enjoyable album via Zoom.

So, that said, you shouldn’t miss his latest album recording (it’ll be his fifth one) at Union Hall on Sat. Jan. 29th at 7:30PM ET & 10PM ET when, one can only hope, the current Omicron surge will have subsided. Get tickets for $20 here.

Pick of the Day: “Nore Davis: Live from The Comedy Trap House” ALBUM RECORDING

Several weeks of quarantine and lockdown have passed and, with every passing week, comedy that has been done via live-stream has gotten better and tighter. Some forward thinking comedians have taken all this time, especially with the prospect of live stand-up comedy returning in full force still being unsure, to do full sets/headline over Zoom.

One such comedian is Nore Davis. Davis has done plenty of “stage time” with his Live from The Comedy Trap House series on Zoom and is now opting to make a big leap and record a comedy album while on Zoom, which very well may be the first comedy album to be recorded on Zoom while in quarantine. On top of that, Davis’ upbeat persona and succinct observations are something that we have loved since we heard his first album, Home Game, a few years ago.

Kyle Ayers is a funny, funny man. Between his own stand-up, Boast Rattle, the podcast Never Seen It, and all the other crazy ideas that Ayers dreams up and makes a comedic golden reality, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed his comedic pursuits immensely over the years. 

He’ll be recording an album over at one of our favorite places in LA (both for watching comedy and just to be at in general), Stories on Sat. Dec. 7th at 8PM. This does mean that Ayers will be recording this album outside and include all the ambient noise of a vibrant Echo Park on a Saturday night, which we’re confident he’ll make something truly special out of.

Nate Craig is a great, rare bird in having recorded and released, independent of a label, two comedy albums that we’ve really dug. Forging his own path to success, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed Nate’s incisive observations in his stand-up for many years now.

So, Nate will be recording his third album next month at Dynasty Typewriter and we highly urge you to be in attendance. Tickets are only $5. By the way, for $10, you’ll get a ticket and Nate’s previous albums, Eggshell and Infinity.

Honestly, we think it’s a travesty that Lizzy Cooperman isn’t more of a known name in comedy. She’s one of the first people we ever saw live that opened our minds to the possibility of what comedy, specifically stand-up could be all those years ago when we started the Bureau.

So, we really urge you to go to one (or both) of the FREE tapings of her album (that will also have the brilliant Karen Kilgariff hosting) at the end of the month.

Maria Bamford is going to make this a banner year as Lady Dynamite is premiering next week May 20th and is recording a new hour that we’ll all be able to make our lives better with the week after that. 

She’s recording her new album 20% at UCB Franklin from two shows on May 26th at 7PM and 8:15PM. The 8:15PM show is currently sold out, but you can buy tickets for the 7PM for now.

Melissa Villasenor has always been a delight with all the voices and personal stories in her comedy for the many years that we’ve seen her in and around and throughout the comedy scene in LA (as well as her notable run on America’s Got Talent).

If you in or around Chicago tomorrow through the weekend, please make sure to attend Nate Craig’s album taping at Zanies. We very much enjoyed his last album Infinity and seeing him develop this latest hour since that last album around has been pretty great, especially that one limo bit.

We hope that limo bit makes the album. If you go to Nate’s taping Thurs. Jan. 8th-Sat. Jan. 11th, you’ll find out exactly what we’re talking about and love it as much as we did.

We’re not kidding when we say that comedy history is being made at Nerdmelt (the theater in the back room of Meltdown Comics) as so many great comedy albums are being recorded between their walls. Dan St. Germain ,who you hopefully just saw a great set from on Conan, is the latest in line of the likes of Dave Anthony, Sean Patton, Morgan Murphy, Mike Lawrence, John Roy, and more to record their latest works there.

Don’t miss out on Germain laying down his debut album “Bad at the Good Times” for AST Records on Fri. Sept. 13th at either 7:30PM or 9PM.
