A&E Set to Debut Two Part Black Comedy History Doc “Right to Offend: The Black Comedy Revolution”

Undeniably, there is a wave of documentaries examining the history of comedy from every possible angle and at every degree. From covering individuals such as Dick Gregory, George Carlin, and even Bill Cosby to focusing on such changing attitudes in the form through the lens of 9/11 with Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11, there is an ever growing fascination of the inner workings of inciting laughter.

A&E is putting their hat in the ring here with Kevin Hart’s Hartbeat & Time Studios’ Right to Offend: The Black Comedy Revolution, a two-part doc series that will trace the lineage of black comedians that defied racial barriers and sought to skewer the absurd inequalities that were just taken for granted, especially the ones based off the amount of melanin you had in your skin.

The likes of Tiffany Haddish, W. Kamau Bell, Michael Che, Steve Harvey, Sherri Shepherd, Wayne Brady, Aisha Tyler, DL Hughley, Amber Ruffin, and Katt Williams amongst other comics and historians will weigh in on the oft-overlooked milestones of black comedy (just compare Mike Binder’s The Comedy Store to Phat Tuesdays: The Hip Hop Era of Comedy).

Take a gander at what’s to come with this teaser for Right to Offend here, then look for its premiere on A&E on Jun. 29th & 30th at 9PM (then presumably streaming on aetv.com afterwards).

Freak and Geeks, the landmark sitcom that ended up being a launching pad for much of the comedic talent you see on TV and in theaters these days, is getting a documentary with both A&E and Morgan Spurlock on board.

More and more, 1999 becomes a distant memory, and thus, a deep dive back into Freaks and Geeks will probably be a refreshing surprise for many folks who enjoy Paul Feig, Judd Apatow, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Martin Starr, James Franco, Busy Philipps, etc. etc.

You’ve now got time between this moment and a TBD premiere date for this doc to, at the very least, watch the series that ended unfortunately far too soon.

TJ Miller Returning as Host of Critics Choice Awards in December

The Critics Choice Awards will not only be moving up the date to Sunday, December 11th (as opposed to going in January like they did this year) to make them kick off awards season, but they will also bring back dependable wild card, TJ Miller, to host the ceremony.

His opening monologue was enough for us to be glad that he has the gig again.

Look for Miller and The Critics Choice Awards to air live on Sunday, Dec. 11 at 8PM EST/5PM PDT on A&E.

On A&E’s Black & White with Sherrod Small and Christian Finnegan, David Alan Grier wanted to share his wisdom as incredibly successful black actor for other black actors and did so by making an ad for his masterclass on acting that’s aptly called “Massa Class”.

Watch, learn, and get a kick out of it here.

NYC’s Christian Finnegan and Sherrod Small will be the hosting duo behind a new panel debate series at A&E, Black and White. As you can probably guess, a big topic of discussion will be race, but they will touch on other issues in the zeitgest as well

We’ll be curious if they’ll get more heated than the panel at The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore or if it’ll pick up where Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn left off.

You can find out soon as Black and White premieres tonight at 10:30PM on A&E.

At 5PM PST, 8PM EST, T.J. Miller will ensue with whatever his plan is to host The Critics Choice Awards, despite “warnings”

The broadcast is live on A&E and it might be worth switching back and forth between the democratic presidential candidate debate.
