Pick of the Day: Varietopia with Paul F. Tompkins (in LA) 3/6

Paul F. Tompkins‘ shows, wherever they may be and whatever wonderfully semi-improvised format he’s doing, have always been hot tickets here in LA and his first 2022 show on Sun. Mar. 6th is no exception. Paul originally had an in-person Varietopia lined-up for this Sunday at the Highland Park’s lovely Lodge Room, but, as with most every other comedy show right now, it has gotten postponed to the aforementioned 3/6 date.

As the race begins to reschedule all the shows and happenings that were lined-up for Jan. 2022, the race to snag up tickets for them has also started and, in some cases, gone at a full tilt sprint.

The late show is already sold out, but there are tickets for the early 5:30PM PT show. It’s a Sunday, so hopefully it won’t be too hard for you to swing a show happening around then, but trust that the everlasting hilariousness of Tompkins is worth it. Tickets are $20 and we hope it’s not sold out before you try to buy some right here.

Pick of the Day: Paul F. Tompkins @ The Bell House (in NYC) 11/12 & 11/13

One of our greatest joys, pre-lockdown, was going to watch Paul F. Tompkins do, well, anything. Whether it be improv, podcasts, both at the same time, or another thing entirely, we would very much try to clear our schedule to catch Tompkins take the stage whatever the situation may be. The brilliance of his irreverence is without compare (even going all the way back to his early album, Impersonal).

So, in regards to catching Paul F. Tompkins’ first post-lockdown performances, there is a date for Paul’s recurring modern variety show Varietopia at the Lodge Room in Highland Park on Sept. 20th, but that is, unsurprisingly, already sold out.

Don’t worry Angelenos. PFT has another date for us on Oct. 23rd. More details TBA.

For NYC, there will be both a Varietopia and a SPONTOURCO (Paul’s interview transformed into improv with Tawny Newsome, Eugene Cordero, and Janet Varney show) at The Bell House in Brooklyn in November.

Specifically, SPONTOURCO will have an early and late show, 7:30PM ET & 10PM ET, on Fri. Nov. 12th and Varietopia will go up Sat. Nov 13th also at 7:30PM ET & 10PM ET (FYI, the early show is sold out).

Get more details and please, please, please get tickets before they sell out, which will very likely happen very soon.

We know Paul F. Tompkins already has his own show, but this, along with everything else he’s doing right now, is proof he could have his own damn TV channel worth of content.

Watch Paul as Andrew Lloyd Webber interview with Aimee Mann and Ted Leo as real band, The Both, here.

Really, this performance of Space Oddity at Paul F. Tompkins’ Varietopia nearly 2 years ago is just perfect for today. Equal parts great in execution and fun for the wide range of performers on stage, it’s something you should probably just watch and listen to over and over for awhile.

RIP David Bowie.

Take your song of the summer, whatever it is, and forget it. Then, replace with your suite of the summer as done by the endlessly talented Eban Schletter and his Amity Suite.

He played it recently at Paul F. Tompkins live variety show, Varietopia and it in place of lyrics that you can scream over and over, there’s plenty of twists and turns that will be fun to hum and see if you can get the timing right.

Watch it here.

Also take note of the announcement at the end that Tompkins’ Varietopia will return.

Paul F. Tompkins is thankfully back in doing a regular variety show over at Largo, now called Varietopia.

You’ll be thankful that’s he back doing his show as well after you watch him “pitch” movies to Michael Sheen and see if Sheen would be into it.
