TCB Debriefing 9/1/23: Bottoms Goes Wide, How I Met Your Father, Titmouse/BWAS, Bridgett Everett, Poor Things

1. Let 2023 be the year of Barbenheimer and Bottoms. Emma Seligman, Rachel Sennott, and Ayo Edebiri made such an astounding comedy that, between Barbie and Bottoms, The Oscars should be flipping the script and giving more nods to comedy in 2024. Celebrate that by going to see Bottoms, now in expanded release so you don’t have to be a coastal elite to go see it in a movie theater.

2. So, it looks like, we won’t get to know exactly How I Met Your Father.

3. The Titmouse Foundation, the non-profit arm of Titmouse Anmation (the studio behind the likes of Big Mouth, Digman!, and The Midnight Gospel) are partnering with Black Women Animate Studios to bolster the goal of hiring “200 diverse animation professionals by the end of 2025” (Deadline). Glad to see more folks are ignoring the conservative activist SCOTUS.

4. While you’ve enjoyed multiple seasons of Somebody Somewhere, you have might been missing on some new tunes from comedy’s cabaret icon, Bridget Everett. Fret not, a new single is coming very soon.

5. Yorgos Lanthimos, the master behind The Lobster and The Favourite, has just scored a ten minute standing ovation following the premiere of his latest work, the bizarre sci-fi-period-piece-sex comedy, Poor Things. While festivals timing their standing ovations is an almost unfathomable display of privilege, we can’t lie that the anticipation for Poor Things is somehow even higher.

6. Might be controversial here, but, perhaps, there should be no 2 drink/item minimum on Labor Day Weekend?

Titmouse Animation is responsible for many of the funniest, groundbreaking cartoons in recent memory including Big Mouth, The Midnight Gospel, Black Dynamite, and so much more. Suffice it to say that you should check out whatever they’re doing. That includes their in-person evening where they present 5 second gems from their vast array of endlessly talented animators.

They’ve made a tradition of their 5 Second Animation Night in LA, usually at the Egyptian, but are taking it across the continent to NYC for a special evening of never before seen animation. Come this Fri. Mar. 25th at 8PM ET, a limited set of folks will get to join Titmouse and company at the SVA Theatre. You can (and should) go get tickets for $5 right now right here.

Renowned (just look at those credits above) animation house Titmouse is having their annual let-the-animators-do-whatever-they-want night next month at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. It’s truly beyond your wildest imagination especially because of the short-form nature of all the ideas.

Tickets are $12 and you can (and very much should) get them here.

The chase for that 15 minutes of fame, which is probably closer to 5 minutes in 2016, gets taken to the nth degree in Nerdland, the comedy from writer Andrew Kevin Walker and director Chris Prynoski.

Paul Rudd and Patton Oswalt voice two vagabonds willing to go to whatever lengths to get their time in the spotlight. Hannibal Buress, Mike Judge, Kate Micucci, Riki Lindhome, John Ennis, Laraine Newman, Reid Scott, and Paul Scheer round out a stellar cast of voices.

You can see the chaos that comes with being desperate to be famous in the new trailer, then catch Nerdland in theaters on December 6th.

While you might have been let down by the recent feature adaptations, Titmouse Animation might be the ones to put your faith back in the classic comedy institution that is The Three Stooges.

The animation studio that brings you many of Adult Swim’s cartoons including China, IL, The Venture Bros., Superjail!, and Metalocalypse will be taking a crack at The Three Stooges and, we think, will probably translate them for modern audiences quite well.

They’ll be making 52 eleven minute episodes, so there will be plenty to binge watch when they get released.

Kristen Schaal, Brittany Snow, both Sharon and Kelly Osbourne, Natasha Leggero, Nasim Pedrad, John Roberts, and Titmouse Animation are all involved.

Kristen Schaal is serving as co-executive producer on MTV’s latest foray into comedy, an animated project called “Fancy Bastards”. Snow, Outcasts get made into the cool kids in town when they find out that they all have the same father who just happens to be a prince.

The two Osbournes, Roberts, Leggero, Pedrad, Roberts, Jessica Lowe, and Jameeliah Garrett will be the show’s very well rounded cast.

With the revival of Celebrity Death Match on MTV2, it looks a promising return for animation on MTV.
