TCB Debriefing 7/26/23: Futurama, Louis CK Doc, Only Murders in the Building, TMNT,

1. Futurama is back (again), baby. It’s as clever as ever and well aware of how ridiculous it is to be revived yet again, this time on a streaming service (after having its first resurrection on basic cable). The first episode of what will be season 11 is on Hulu now and expect new episodes on Mondays.

2. A lot of headlines about this year’s Toronto International Film Festival will be made about the lack of star power present due to the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strikes, but the premiere of a documentary about the accusers of Louis CK ought to be not overlooked in the slightest (Variety). Remember that he barely apologized, if you can even call the circumlocution about what happened a few specials ago “an apology”.

3. Here’s the first full trailer for s3 of Only Murders in the Building. Guest stars Paul Rudd and Meryl Streep do what they do best and will likely steal all the scenes that they’re in. Look for it on Hulu starting Tues. Aug. 8th.

4. Ahead of its international rollout, the latest iteration of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has already scored a sequel and a Paramount+ series (Variety). One has to wonder what sort of formula between ticket pre-sales and trailer views and social media engagement equals multiple greenlights.

5. Ted Cruz and Ben Shapiro are predictably and pathetically mad at Greta Gerwig’s Barbie (HuffPo). Unknowingly, they just gave some of the best pull quotes for the movie that will undoubtedly translate to more box office success.

6. For any sort of live comedy event (or any live event for that matter), can we stop having just a door time and no start time? Please do both.

Even though she was great in Greenberg, which is set in LA, Greta Gerwig is the go to NYC indie dramedy darling.

Frances Ha, Mistress America, and Lola Versus all follow Gerwig as she is going through some tumultuous phase of her life while in NYC and it’s proved to be a winning formula.

So, in this latest edition of Greta in NYC called Maggie’s Plan from Rebecca Miller, Gerwig gets into a love triangle with a couple played by Ethan Hawke and Julianne Moore and decides that she wants to be artificially inseminated as part of complicating the whole relationship.

It was playing at The Toronto International Film Festival and got snatched up for distribution by Sony Pictures Classics. We’d definitely like to see it in theaters soon as we’re still in the afterglow of how great Mistress America was.

Anomalisa is set for a limited theatrical release on Dec. 30th.

What started as a stop motion that received a whole lot of love on Kickstarter has gotten a whole lot of love on the film festival circuit.

The brilliant Charlie Kaufman wrote and co-directed, with Starburns Industries’ Duke Johnson, Anomalisa, which Paramount Pictures has acquired while at the Toronto International Film Festival for distribution very soon.

So, come Christmas time, we’ll get to see both Star Wars and Kaufman’s vision of “a man crippled by the mundanity of his life”. Sounds pretty great to us.

Watch Trailer for “Jafar Panahi’s Taxi” from Jafar Panahi Who Is Banned From Writing/Directing Films in Iran

One of Iran’s most currently celebrated directors Jafar Panahi is actually going through a twenty year ban on writing and directing his own films in Iran. As you can probably guess, the Iranian government had problems with the content of his films and after several arrests, Panahi received that long punishment despite being applauded for his work across the globe.

Panahi has not let the ban stop him from making films as he has manage to do them cleverly in secret, usually in the form of documenting himself and his environs.

His latest work, Taxi, follows Jafar Panahi as a taxi driver in Tehran, perhaps the country’s most famous one, and the slightly absurd passengers and situations that might come into his cab. It’s currently playing the film festival circuit, but hopefully it’ll get picked up for a limited release soon.

Watch, enjoy, and marvel at this trailer of what he pulled off here.

Before embarking on his Black Plague Tour, Chris Rock has something else big on the horizon. His latest movie Top Five following a comedian turned movie star, in which he starred, written, and directed is making quite the ruckus at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Studios are in a bidding war of the likes that have been rarely seen at TIFF and Paramount Pictures reportedly has offered $12.5 million for the worldwide rights to the movie. Not only is that number impressive for a festival buy, but the movie itself only cost around $6 million to make.

So, Rock’s Top Five sounds like it’ll be pretty good.

(via Deadline)

The Toronto International Film Festival has taken what would have just been a special premiere screening of Bill Murray’s latest film St. Vincent and made an entire Bill Murray Day. There will be free screenings on Sept. 5th during TIFF for Stripes, Ghostbusters, and Groundhog Day.

Supposedly, Murray will also be there, probably giving many in attendance their own Bill Murray story by possibly doing anything from karaoke, dodge ball, giving wedding toasts, etc.
