TCB Debriefing 8/7/23: Reservation Dogs, Barbie, Wes Anderson, TCA Awards, Stand

1. Just a friendly reminder that the third and final season of Reservation Dogs is starting off with a bang and might be the strangest, most beautiful, most heartfelt, funny, and, of course, best yet (Spirit William Knifeman really shines brighter than he has before). They are just a few episodes in with new ones dropping on Wednesday on FX/Hulu.

2. Whether she deeply, truly knew it or not, Margot Robbie called Barbie making a $1 billion (Variety). With less than three weeks in release, the Greta Gerwig helmed Robbie-starring Barbie surpassed a $1 billion, far outpacing Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One, and is on track to make way more as the film is officially set for release in Saudi Arabia and U.A.E. (THR).

3. Perhaps, the most celebrated comedy auteur of our time, Wes Anderson, is getting lifetime achievement honors at the Venice Film Festival in the form of the Cartier Glory to the Filmmaker Award (Deadline). This makes us think of how symmetrical Anderson’s award case must be?

4. The Television Critics Association Awards just announced their winners sans pomp and circumstance due to the double strike. Still, kudos to the winners, though What We Do in the Shadows and The Other Two need more awards pronto.

Outstanding Achievement in Comedy: The Bear
Individual Achievement in Comedy: Natasha Lyonne, Poker Face
Outstanding Achievement in Variety, Talk, or Sketch: I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson
Outstanding New Program: The Bear
Outstanding Achievment in Reality: Jury Duty

(Full list of TCA Award Winners here)

4. The big time comedy/variety special Stand Up to Cancer is set to return in less than two weeks on Aug. 19th at 8PM ET/5PM PT with Jack Black, Ben Falcone, Zach Galifianakis, Brad Garrett, Bill Hader, Jon Hamm, Kevin Hart, Ed Helms, Melissa McCarthy, Matthew McConaughey, and many, many other star-studded cameos. You’ll be able to watch it on all major broadcast networks and stream it on multiple platforms as well. Hopefully, like all live specials these days, they’ll put clips on YouTube to encourage people to watch the whole thing later (THR).

5. Is anyone running open mics on the picket line yet? Maybe just for chants?

Fleabag Wins Both Individual and Outstanding Achievement in Comedy as Well as Program of the Year at TCA Awards

Many folks are saying that Season 2 of Fleabag is even a step up from the beloved first season. Certainly, this hat trick of wins at the Television Critics Association Awards from this weekend shows that feeling still holds true (Fleabag deserved more awards for its truly groundbreaking first season).

So, we’re all in agreement that Fleabag is a grand piece of television and that Phoebe Waller-Bridge, with her involvement in the next Bond movie, might just make James Bond franchise better than it has ever been? Yes? Perfect.

This weekend, the Television Critics’ Association handed out their annual round of awards for what they think the best and brightest in TV is. We’re not sure how much influence this will have on the Emmys (the same goes for any other TV awards for that matter), but we do hope this bodes well for the trailblazing Full Frontal with Samantha Bee.

Below are the comedy winners for the 2016 TCA Awards:

-Individual Achievement in Comedy: Rachel Bloom (CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND, The CW)
-Outstanding Achievement in News and Information: FULL FRONTAL WITH SAMANTHA BEE (TBS)
-Outstanding Achievement in Comedy: BLACK-ISH (ABC)
-Career Achievement Award: Lily Tomlin
-Heritage Award: THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW (CBS)

Here’s the full list of winners.

Cable networks come up big versus networks yet again.

Outside of ABC scoring a nomination each for black-ish and Fresh Off the Boat and Seinfeld being up for a ‘Heritage Award’, cable networks dominated the TCA nominations for comedy with shows like You’re The Worst, Silicon Valley, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Veep. In fact, they even outperformed streaming services in comedy, which were lead solely by Master of None.

We’re glad to see Samantha Bee, who has hit the ground in a full-tilt sprint since her show Full Frontal premiered on TBS earlier this year, is getting a deserving nod here as well.

Given how expansive TV is, even from last year, we’re going to guess that this won’t be too much of barometer for what the rest of the awards season holds for TV comedies.

The rest of the nominees are listed here.

Terry Crews to Host TCA Awards

Since the Television Critics Association Awards isn’t televised, we’d hope that Terry Crews gets to let really loose and we’re not meaning roast jokes.

We’re fully expecting to see a musical number operated by his pecks.

Parks and Recreation and Louie Win at TCA Awards

It’s not surprising that Parks and Recreation and Louis CK’s Louie received another award to add to their collection from the Television Critics’ Association.

Just so we are clear, being not surprising, in this case, is a good thing.

Key and Peele to Host TCA Awards This Year

Keegan Michael-Key and Jordan Peele have reached a new milesone by being set to host the TCA Awards (Television Critics Association). Not only are we looking forward to Key & Peele host an awards show, but this probably means some more Key & Peele sketches before the show returns in September.
