Pick of the Day: Performance Anxiety (in LA) 4/26

LA has had a penchant for doing comedy shows in odd places for decades, long before any sort of pandemic reached the county line.

One of those spots was the famed adult toy store, The Pleasure Chest, that featured the bi-weekly delight known as Performance Anxiety, hosted by Eli Olsberg. The last Performance Anxiety that was on the books was on Mar. 10, 2020 and it has been so long since that time that we forgot to see if it might even come back or if there would ever be anything to happen live and in person back at The Pleasure Chest.

Thankfully, it’s another thing that is confidently coming back to this side of the pandemic on Tues. Apr. 26th at 8PM PT (with the same nice price that they had in 2020, $7) and the same sort of fantastic line-up of comics surrounded by a bunch of sex toys and accessories.

This very first post-lockdown Performance Anxiety will feature the likes of Adam Conover, Joe Mande, River Butcher, Blair Socci, Hampton Yount, Dana Donnelly, and Subhah Agarwal.

Go get your tickets right now right here for one of the kinkier comedy shows that you’ll ever go to.

Pick of the Day: Comedy For People Who Hate Joe Rogan 5/6

So, Baltimore-based comedian Sophie Connell has had this recurring virtual stand-up showcase where she features, “four comedians from differing backgrounds.” There are plenty of virtual stand-ups that do feature diverse talent, but we this one just happens to have the timely name of Comedy for People Who Hate Joe Rogan.

Given his, at best, wishy-washy stance on the COVID-19 vaccine that caused national controversy as he expressed said stance on his podcast The Joe Rogan Experience, one of the biggest podcasts around, comedy or otherwise (Spotify paid him $100 million to go exclusive with their streaming service).

So, this live-stream pushes for other voices that you might want to hear (including very funny guests Erica Switzer, Subhah Agarwal, and Baltimore-based comedians Michael Furr and Robin Hazel).

This latest edition of Comedy For People Who Hate Joe Rogan is set to go live on Thurs. May 6th at 5PM PT/8PM ET and is free to stream, if you RSVP here.

This Thursday, it will have been a year since Peacock started prancing around Club Tee Gee over in the lovely part of LA known as Atwater Village. In that time, it has quickly grown into a neatly packed and produced, tight stand-up show that has become a neighborhood (and LA) favorite on Thursday nights. Going for an entire year, especially when you’re maintaining a high quality show every week is incredibly difficult and deserves a nod of admiration (in person at this week’s show preferably)

So, join host Kiran Deol and a very, very special, extra stacked line-up all for the always nice price of a $5 suggested donation to celebrate Peacock’s One Year Anniversary.

Nico Santos & Lauren Ash
Sabrina Jalees & Jeffery Self
Amber Nelson & John Milheiser
Sean White & Subhah Agarwal

Modern Comedian Shows The Open Mic Life with Subhah Agarwal

Open mics are an unavoidable part of being a comedian. They’re often brutal and, in fact, you shouldn’t think of them any other way, but they are also crucial to developing your voice as a comedian so when you do a big show, you don’t fuck it up (hopefully).

Scott Moran’s amazing series Modern Comedian for PBS Digital follows up and coming comedian Subhah Agarwal who grinds it out at open mics in NYC as much as humanly possible and exhibits how hard work and focus can be quite rewarding in comedy. Watch the episode here.
