TCB Debriefing 8/4/23: The Pod Generation, Asteroid City, Ziwe’s black friend Essays, Russell Howard

1. It almost comes as no surprise that there are a number of high concept sci-fi dramedies coming our way soon since Black Mirror has been such a cultural milestone for years. Already, there’s the very trippy Landscape with Invisible Hand and, also due out very soon, will be Sophie Barthes‘ film festival hit The Pod Generation. From the trailer, one sees Emilia Clarke and Chiwetel Ejiofor navigate trying to have a child in a future where every baby is a test tub– er, egg tube baby. Full disclosure, when we first heard the title, we thought this might have something to do with podcasts. Look for The Pod Generation in limited release next Fri. Aug. 11th.

2. Also this next Friday, Wes Anderson‘s hysterical, madcap, brilliant, incredibly self-aware comedy Asteroid City will be streaming on Peacock (Deadline).

3. You’ve seen the iconic IG Live legend, Baited, as well as the iconic Showtime series adaptation, and, hopefully, her live on stage (probably somewhere in Brooklyn). Now, you can get an iconic book from the one and only Ziwe aptly titled, black friend Essays. Since Paramount idiotically brought Ziwe on Showtime to an end, this book is required reading. Pre-order now; get it Oct. 17th.

4. One of the UK’s best comedy exports, the effervescent, yet shrewd Russell Howard, is back on the road (note: he was one of the handful of comedians that actually pulls off a gigantic global tour). Howard just announced a good ol’ U.S. of A. (East Coast and some of the Midwest to be accurate) tour running from Oct. 4th-22nd. Get tickets here.

5. Some comedians, when dismounting, use the past tense when referring to themselves (e.g. I’ve been [name of comedian] rather than the existential present tense. Is this an indicator that they’ve played more of a stage persona than their actual selves? We think about this at every single stand-up show we watch.

Russell Howard Finally Gets Back to America, Starting with Colbert

One of the UK’s current best comedy exports (and, consequently, one of the world’s biggest comedians), Russell Howard was supposed to go on a global tour that got was cut short back in 2020 because of, well, you know by now.

Now, on this side of things, Russell, one of the most upbeat comedians working today by the way, has hopped back on his global tour now called Respite. He’ll be working his way through North America starting next month, but kicked off his joyous arrival stateside on one of our biggest stages, The Ed Sullivan Theater at The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Enjoy Russell’s cheery and spirited stand-up (that isn’t too cheery to the point of annoyance) here, then maybe go snag tickets for a date on Russell’s Respite tour near you at russell-howard.co.uk.

Pick of the Day: Russell Howard (in LA) 4/8 & 4/9

International superstar touring UK comedian Russell Howard was actually slated to do a whole run of shows in LA at Dynasty Typewriter in spring 2020. You know that didn’t happen and we all headed indoors to explore what virtual comedy was like.

With the Omicron variant sparking several closures of public gatherings and indoor events across the world for, at least, the rest of the year, one can only look to further in the future for an assured (probably) return, once more, to indoor comedy shows at proper venues.

So, Howard rescheduled the show far, far in advance in 2022 to get ahead, at the time, of anything might happen with the ever evolving pandemic (like the Omicron variant of COVID-19). He has four shows lined-up for Friday Apr. 8th and Saturday Apr. 9th both at 8PM PT & 10PM PT. We’re not the betting types, but we’re pretty sure that these shows will happen and the high energy, sharply funny, and positive energy of Howard is something you could probably use right now.

Go buy tickets at $25 a pop for Howard’s late shows on those dates since the early shows have already sold out.

Russell Howard to Shoot Netflix Special During Final Leg of His International Tour

It’s about time that Russell Howard got a U.S. distributed comedy special.

This latest tour he went on was truly international and one of the biggest we’ve heard of in recent memory (maybe only Weird Al’s last tour was as big or bigger?) as Howard went all around and sold out shows in the UK, the U.S., U.A.E., Sweden, Norway, Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Australia, and Canada.

In any case, Howard and his comedy are a charming whirlwind and will hopefully get a bit more notoriety in the States soon.
