Reductress Gets a Pilot Order for Late Night Show at Comedy Central with Abby Elliott Attached as Host

For those uninitiated with Reductress, “the Onion for feminism”, please go on a deep dive ASAP and get into their great satirical articles, podcasts, etc. that probably, at this point, surpass the simple comparisons to The Onion.

Now that you’re hopefully caught up, you can get hyped that Reductress, co-created by Beth Newell and Sarah Pappalardo, is getting their own late night pilot over at Comedy Central that they’re calling The Reductress Hour. Abby Elliott will be hosting, but doing so in character.

Whether that’s more or less in-character than Jordan Klepper is on The Opposition isn’t clear at this point, but given Reductress’ tone, we’d guess that they’ll be going as absurd as they can go.

We can only hope that it gets picked up to series so we can see what that actually looks like.

Adult Swim Orders a Three Busy Debras Pilot

With an assist from Amy Poehler’s Paper Kite production company, Mitra Jouhari, Sandy Honig, and Alyssa Stonoha, otherwise known as the absurdist comedy troupe Three Busy Debras, will be making a pilot for Adult Swim.

You might remember that Three Busy Debras successfully did a Kickstarter in order to play Carnegie Hall, which only makes us wonder what they will do if they get their own TV show. We can only hope that Adult Swim picks up this pilot to series in order to find out.

Lena Waithe’s Queer Comedy ‘Twenties’ Comedy Gets Pilot Order at TBS

From Master of None to The Chi to this latest project, Lena Waithe has made huge leaps and bounds into a name that you need to know in TV and comedy as well as a voice that you need to hear.

We can only hope that TBS orders Twenties to series to see what Lena’s comedy about a queer black girl figuring life out in 20s will look, sound, and feel like.

Taika Waititi’s & Jemaine Clement ‘What We Do In The Shadows’ Gets FX Pilot Order

Taika Waititi’s & Jemaine Clement ‘What We Do In The Shadows’ Gets FX Pilot Order

A few things to note here.

1) If this goes to series, FX’s comedy line-up will be Baskets, Atlanta, Better Things, Archer, and What We Do In The Shadows (not to mention It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and You’re The Worst on FXx). That’s nearly flawless as far as we can see.

2) What We Do In The Shadows has an actual shot of being made into a TV show stateside. If you enjoyed Thor: Ragnarok at all (and somehow don’t know about What We Do In The Shadows), you could be in for a very wonderful surprise.

3) This is a great reason to go rewatch one of the funniest movies in recent memory.

Showtime Orders Frankie Shaw Comedy Pilot ‘SMILF’ Based on Her Short Film | Deadline

Among other great moves that Showtime is making right now, one is giving a Frankie Shaw a pilot order for SMILF (acronym for Single Mother I’d Like To F*ck) based on her critically acclaimed short film of the same name.

SMILF follows Shaw’s life as a young single mother who still wants to follow all of her desires, but has to balance them with the reality of having a son on her own.

If this goes to series (and we hope it does), it will be intriguing to see this side-by-side with FX’s single mother dramedy, Better Things.

Comedy Central Orders Talk Show Pilot “Gettin’ Some Strange with Kurt Braunohler”

Comedy Central makes another great move by ordering a talk show pilot from the amazing Kurt Braunohler. Braunohler’s Roustabout hasn’t even premiered yet and the network is already wanting more from Kurt, which should be a really good sign for what’s to come.

If you were at the last Riot LA Comedy Festival, you probably got to see the last incarnation of a Kurt Braunohler talk show, which featured interviewing guests with a lie detector test, several “mistimed” surprises, and a second line leading the whole audience through the streets of downtown LA to an after party.

Let’s hope that some semblance of that will make it to the Gettin’ Some Strange pilot.

Comedy Central Orders Weekly Variety Show Pilot Hosted by Justin Willman, Produced by Chris Hardwick

Comedy Central is going further into the Nerdist/Chris Hardwick business after the sucess of “@midnight” by ordering a pilot produced by Hardwick for a variety show intended to be weekly.

Justin Willman who you might know as a charming magician or the host of Cupcake Wars would be set to host what would be a mix of sketch, stand-up, “social experiments”, and more.

This might prove to be another nice way to expand Comedy Central’s branding as a variety show doesn’t currently exist on Comedy Central.

Tina Fey/Robert Carlock Comedy Gets Pilot Order From Fox

Well, a pilot order is nice as a Christmas gift, but how about most, if not all, of Tina Fey/Robert Carlock’s projects in development at various networks go to series (they already have one at NBC)?

Comedy Central Orders Asylum Comedy Pilot From Nick Turner & Lee Rubenstein

Two very funny people in Nick Turner and Lee Rubenstein get a comedy pilot order from Comedy Central.

Yet, another good recent move (in addition to ordering a pilot of The Chris Gethard Show and renewing Adam DeVine’s House Party)  by Comedy Central and we hope they keep it up.

ABC Orders UK’s ‘Bad Education’ Reboot Pilot To Be Written by Peter Huyck and Alex Gregory

ABC is taking UK series ‘Bad Education’ and adapting to U.S. audiences by way of having former King of The Hill writers Peter Huyck and Alex Gregory write a pilot.

With Chris Lilley’s Ja’mie at HBO, is this the start of a new sitcom trend set in schools?

ABC Orders Pilot From Aaron Kaplan, Ruben Fleischer & Donick Cary of Australia’s ‘Strange Calls’

What could be considered an Australian version of Eureka is possibly coming to ABC, which is a pleasant surprise to see. For it being a high concept comedy and the director of Zombieland, the movie, on board, this might be worth ordering to series.

FX Orders Comedy Pilot ‘The Comedians’ Starring Billy Crystal

Based off the description, part of us thinks it’s kind of the flipside of the scene from Annie Hall where Woody Allen is listening to a talk show host on what type of jokes he wants. Another part of us thinks that could be really great and that FXx consequently will be great.
