The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 118: Max Beasley & Being on the Side of Jokes

June 29, 2022
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
max beasley, nick nemeroff, trans, trans comedy

It’s one thing to be a rising star in the comedy scene and navigating all the terrain that comes with that, but it’s a whole other thing entirely to also navigate your identity, especially if you’re openly transitioning between genders at the same time. If you’ve seen one Max Beasley recently, you’ll agree that they’re balancing the two journeys exquisitely and getting funnier every time you see them. Max chats in-depth about the ins and outs of forging that path for themselves and always going for the jokes vs. so-called “clap-ter”.

Also, we say goodbye to the one and only Nick Nemeroff.

R.I.P. Nick Nemeroff, 1989-2022

nick nemeroff

Nick Nemeroff spent a precious window of time of his life and comedy career in LA. For all the run-ins that we’ve had with him in and around the scene, Nick would be a delightful, extremely clever breath of understated fresh air. In reading various news or scrolling through various dedications to him on social media, you might have heard praises of how sweet and kind he was and those were 100% true.

Also, Nemeroff was one of the few that dutifully carried the one-liner comedian torch and very much did that side of stand-up comedy very proud. His deftly low key delivery and his spot-on pauses were the perfect accents to his MC Escher-esque writing. Please listen, enjoy, and spread the gospel of his debut album The Pursuit of Comedy Has Ruined My Life.

Nemeroff passed away from us all far too early at 32 and let’s please remember him far into the future where he should have been looking back at several successful hour specials.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 5: Ahamed Weinberg/Nick Nemeroff & Quarantine Beef

April 29, 2020
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
ahamed weinberg, nick nemeroff, quarantine life, stand up comedy

Well, this was a wild one. Let’s just say that as the weeks have gone on, quarantine is driving people up the wall even if they just fully recovered from contracting COVID-19 like Ahamed Weinberg or released an amazing comedy album The Pursuit of Comedy Has Ruined My Life like Nick Nemeroff. Both are very, very funny comedians that are on the upswing right now and yet, these uncertain times can still throw a wrench in everything as was shown in their wayward “conversation” with TCB’s Jake Kroeger. All of that said, there is a Parks and Recreation reunion, Jamel Johnson’s new audience-less special Friend or Foe, and even three one-hour long improv specials from Middleditch & Schwartz to really help us not go stir crazy like Ahamed, Nick, and Jake.

Follow Ahamed @ahamedweinberg on Instagram & Twitter and do the same for Nick Nemeroff @nicknemeroff. Once again, get Nemeroff’s fantastic album The Pursuit of Comedy Has Ruined My Life. Nick Nemeroff’s “The Pursuit of Comedy Has Ruined My Life” Has a Plethora of Satisfying Absurdities

April 27, 2020
News
comedy album, nick nemeroff, stand up comedy

In an age of comedy where the “truth” and being honest and vulnerable has seemed to take precedent, the artisans of purely, unapologetically silly jokes have become increasingly rare. Those that have any knack for the meticulous nature of that comedic style are even rarer, which is why you should really savor the jokes of one Nick Nemeroff.

Nemeroff’s delivery is as drawn out and dry as we have seen in quite some time, especially on his new album, The Pursuit of Comedy Has Ruined My Life. There is such a slow burn to the build-up of his jokes, there’s plentiful giggling to be had the longer he draws out the joke before getting to the punchline. The noticeable pauses and the deliberate pacing really ratchet up the tension and Nemeroff is a deft writing talent and finding the perfectly ridiculous twist, turn, and punchline to release said tension.

Also, Nemeroff does, from time to time, revel in being self-aware of how beautifully absurd his material is and how he delivers it in such a reserved tone of voice. These momentary breaks in character really sweeten the game that Nemeroff is playing with the crowd during his set and consequently adds another entire layer of fun to be had.

Nick Nemeroff’s The Pursuit of Comedy Has Ruined My Life will be available to buy/listen to on Tues. Apr. 27th, but you can pre-order on Apple Music now.

Here’s a bit of what Nemeroff has up his sleeve in the meantime and you’ll see what we’ve been saying.
