Pick of the Day: Every Place I Cry 9/24

Whether we like it or not, we are all in our feelings all the time in these days of COVID-19. Stuck at home, faced with the reality of the world literally and figuratively being on fire.

So, why not get in your feelings with some of the best musical improvisers out there in Every Place I Cry, a “fully improvised emo experience” that ought to satisfy your nostalgia as much as be cathartic for this truly absurd, but very real world we live in. Jess McKenna, Zach Reino, Nick Mandernach, and Ross Bryant are almost unrivaled in their improv and musical skills and form the fictional titular emo band, Every Place I Cry. Even as folks that don’t particularly care for emo, EPIC got to us.

They’ll be doing a live-stream via Dynasty Typewriter on Thurs. Sept. 24th at 6PM PT/9PM ET. Tickets start at $5 and you can (and should) get them here.

All star musical improv group Baby Wants Candy is doing their special Hamilton-esque show again where they improvise an entirely Hamilton-style musical of a different famous person than Alexander Hamilton.

It’s pretty damn amazing and, just like the actual Hamilton musical, a must-see experience. The next Shamilton will happen right in between Christmas and New Year’s Eve on Thurs., Dec. 27th at 8:30PM at UCB Sunset.

Tickets are still available for only $7 and you really ought to go get them here.

By himself, Joey Greer, one of our favorite improvisers around, puts on one hell of a show by improvising bits for an hour with the aid/disruption of a DJ.

It’s as crazy of a “conversation” you can have (with music playing intermittently).

The next edition of In Conversation with Music will be on Wednesday, July 18th at 10PM at Dynasty Typewriter at the Hayworth Theater. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Please do get them in advance here.

Once more, Off Book: The Improvised Musical with Jessica McKenna and Zach Reino will grace us mere mortals with their spontaneous lyrical and sonic genius on Friday May 11th at Dynasty Typewriter at the Hayworth Theater.

Just to be clear, McKenna and Reino will improvise a fully fleshed musical out of thin air with accompaniment by Scott Passarella, a go-to in piano accompaniment in musical improv.

Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at door. You can get tickets here OR you can enter to win a free pair of tickets that we happen to have here: http://thecomedybureau.dola.com/giveaways.

Whether you’ve seen Hamilton or not or even love musical theater or not, we’d wager that you’d still enjoy Shamilton (an improvised musical in the style of Hamilton, but based on a different famous person), the new project from musical improv troupe Baby Wants Candy.

After all, it was one of our favorite 100 comedy things from 2017.

The next Shamilton will be on Sun. Jan. 28th at 9PM at UCB Sunset. Tickets are $7 and you can (and should) get them here.

Eliza Skinner, with only one guest and musical accompaniment, make up an entire musical before your very eyes. If you’ve ever seen Eliza do musical improv, you’d know that she can not only pull that off, but do so in such a dazzling fashion.

Get tickets for the next show, this Saturday, with special guest Eugene Cordero.

The rest of our listings for comedy shows/events as well as open mics and maps are embedded at www.thecomedybureau.com.
