Get a First Look at Josh Johnson’s Peacock Special “Up Here Killing Myself” Cutting Between Therapy and Live Stand-Up

February 7, 2023
News

It’s a wonderful thing that mental health has been more focused on than ever in the realm of comedy. Not only are more and more people in and around comedy seeking out and getting the help they need with their anxieties and insecurities, but they’re more candid about it on stage than was ever previously the norm.

To highlight this shift even further (as well as furthering the emphasis on mental health), Josh Johnson‘s hour special Up Here Killing Myself, coming to Peacock. as it will intercut between Josh doing stand-up in front a live crowd and then to a reenactment of a therapy session, gorgeously shot in black and white. The link between his material and what eats away at his psyche is so strong that it seems Josh is finishing his own sentences in therapy on stage, in joke form (hence the title).

Take a gander for yourself with the trailer for Up Here Killing Myself here, then look for it on Peacock starting Fri. Feb. 17th.

Comedy Central Launches Black Comedy Docu-series “Dark Humor”

As the art form of comedy continues to evolve, there have been plenty of documentaries and docu-series that examine how comedy, whether it be stand-up, sketch, improv, etc. has transformed over the decades. The examination of black comedians and their journey, often one that’s mutually exclusive from mainstream/white comedy, has not been as closely examined even though some of the most revered comedians of all time include Richard Pryor, Dave Chappelle, and Chris Rock.

So, Comedy Central’s new digital series, Dark Humor, offers such a look into the experience of black stand-up comedians today and their work that’s reflective of their black experience. It’ll feature plenty of clips as well as interviews from the likes of Baron Vaughn, Tommy Davidson, Sinbad, Nore Davis, Ms. Pat, Sonia Denis, Chloe Hilliard, Lil Rel Howery, Yamaneika Saunders, Roy Wood Jr., Josh Johnson, Damien Lemon, Jordan Temple, Open Mike Eagle, Rae Sanni, Cipha Sounds, Gina Yashere, and more.

They just launched Dark Humor just as Black History Month started and new episodes will come out every Mon. on Comedy Central’s YouTube channel.

You can get a taste of Dark Humor both with the series trailer as well as the very first episode which dives into the deep end by going into black comedy and American politics.

Comedy Central Has Already Taped a New Round of “Comedy Central Stand-Up Featuring” Set to Premiere Dec. 1st

With stand-up comedy getting its footing with outdoor shows (wherever they can happen), it was inevitable that a network would make a run at trying to film it in order to have some brand new stand-up content.

Comedy Central went ahead and did another round of their popular stand-up digital series Comedy Central Stand-Up Featuring in NYC with a socially distant, masked audience (probably done a little safer than SNL form the looks of it) taped outside. The trailer for this latest batch of exclusive stand-up showcase sets almost resemble something like normal, before-times stand-up, but, of course, the material and the cutaways to the crowd are very much of the moment of the COVID-19 pandemic we’re in right now.

Rosebud Baker, Mary Beth Barone, Brittany Carney, Christi Chiello, Andy Haynes, Josh Johnson, Ismael Loutfi, Gavin Matts, Monroe Martin, Rebecca O’Neal and Eagle Witt all got to take the stage for this very special edition of CC’s digital stand-up series and will very likely have set a precedent of what stand-up comedy will look like for awhile.

Take a look for yourself with the trailer for this round of Comedy Central Stand-Up Featuring here, then look for it to start streaming on Comedy Central’s Stand-Up YouTube channel every week starting Dec. 1st.

Pick of the Day: A Benefit for Guns Down America 8/26

News

Gun control, unfortunately, is still an issue in the U.S. amongst every other crucial issue that’s happening in the country right now. That being said, that also means that there is organizations and people that are still striving for a better future in regards to that issue (and that there is comedy benefit to boot).

So, Josh Johnson, Cameron Esposito, Adam Conover, Nick Guerra (and more TBA) will convene (virtually) at the Nowhere Comedy Club this coming Wed., Aug. 26th at 5:30PM PT/8:30PM ET to support Guns Down America, “a community powered organization that brings together Americans from across the country to solve our national gun crisis in strategic and creative ways.”

Given the actions of NRA as of late (and throughout the last several years), striving for real movement on gun control is imperative and this ought to be one sweet show in supporting efforts to make that happen.

Tickets are $25-$50 and you can (and should really) get tickets here.

Those are the 14 names that will get to do a half hour Comedy Central special that will be now called “Comedy Central Stand-Up Presents” later this Fall. If you take a closer look, this might be CC’s best, most diverse half-hour line-up yet (i.e. it’s mostly fantastic comics that aren’t straight white guys)

Kind of harkens back to the days of when Comedy Central had “Comedy Central Presents”, doesn’t it?
