Pick of the Day: Pack Theater Reopening (w/TCB Presents) (in LA) 3/5

The Pack Theater, one of LA’s most innovative and boundary pushing comedy theaters, has survived the pandemic, seemingly, more than a few times. Right at the outset, they had a big fundraiser that raised enough money to cover their rent for several months, though we truly didn’t have any idea how long the pandemic would last (especially as it’s still not completely over two years later). In that time, they built one of the most robust offerings of virtual comedy from any venue almost anywhere in the world. All of that has kept them alive enough (even having to temporarily give up their original space in The Complex) through all the variants.

This Saturday, March 5th, The Pack Theater will be finally opening its doors for in-person shows and as a matter of it being a grand reopening, they’re going to have a grand evening curated from every corner of comedy (including with a bit of an assist from us here at TCB.

Right now, the Pack Theater Reopening has a line-up of:

7PM PT-improv from Heather & Miles (one of the all time, best improv duos)
8PM PT-sketch from Joan Ford & Cait Raft (one of the most fun sketch duos in LA)
9PM PT-The Comedy Bureau (that’s us) Presents (w/Girl God, Atsuko Okatsuka, Zavior Phillips, Nori Reed, Percy Rustomji, Malcolm Barrett, Madison Shepard, and host Ayla Glass

Just come around this Saturday, Mar. 5th to 6476 Santa Monica Blvd. to celebrate another comedy institution making it to this side of the pandemic. Get tickets for the evening’s festivities here.

Pick of the Day: Girl God (in LA) 1/15

Most venues, bars, theaters are opting to go dark in LA and NYC for, seemingly, the rest of the year. Thus, we’ve got to look to next year for some sort of light of a future comedy show to catch at this stretch of that ever present, metaphorical tunnel.

So, earlier in the fall, Girl God (Grace Freud and April Clark) served up their special brand of “hot trans dykes who do dumb shit on stage” (that’s their very own description of their act) to NYC for a taping. Coming Sat. Jan. 15th at 10PM PT, LA will get the Girl God treatment at The Elysian with an exclusive performance that ought to be the sort of absurdist start to 2022 we all need.

Do not miss on the brilliantly daft antics of Freud and Clark and go get your tickets for $16 right here right now (and hope that shows aren’t cancelling or postponing a month from now).

Pick of the Day: Girl God with Grace Freud & April Clark Encore Show (in NYC) 11/7

We were originally going to make Grace Freud and April Clark’s album taping for Girl God at Union Hall our pick of the day, but that sold out so quick that there was not really much to do in telling you about it.

Luckily, there’s an encore show that will have some lovely, absurdist bells and whistles in the form of ridiculous powerpoint presentations, bonkers games, and more (in addition to some wondrous, hysterical stand-up). Freud and Clark, AKA Girl God, have lined up this encore show for this Sun., Nov. 7th at 7PM ET at the Brooklyn Comedy Collective.

We have a feeling this is probably going to sell out too, so, find $10 and go get your tickets right this very second here. 21+, proof of vaccination required.

Pick of the Day: Merry Goodnight [Fridays] (in LA)

News
andrew friedman, Grace Freud, kate mccarthy, la comedy, midnight show, Steven Kreager, variety show

While stand-up comedy is very much back in Los Angeles, other forms of comedy have quite yet returned with such fervor to the LA comedy scene. Improv and sketch and other delightful comedy oddities are scarce compared to the plethora of shows that happened pre-lockdown.

Also, live comedy at the midnight hour wasn’t the biggest thing in LA, but there were always a few things you could count on. That too is very, very hard to find these days.

Fortunately, there has been a magical late night oasis of coloring-outside-the-lines comedy every Friday night at an adorably tiny backyard in Highland Park. Merry Goodnight is the sort of loosey goosey fever dream of a live comedy show that you’d be looking for at midnight on Fridays (especially because they absolutely don’t allow stand-up on their show). The unfiltered silliness of Grace Freud, Steven Kreager, Andrew Friedman, and Kate McCarthy pervade the midnight hour along with special guests from in and around LA to do that sort of wild comedy you’d only see past 11PM at UCB or on The Tomorrow Show or at Lyric Hyperion in general.

It’s free to attend, so long as you have your proof of vaccination and, with all of that in mind, you better get yourself to 6166 York Blvd. on this Friday night and every Friday night going forward. Get more info/details here.
