Pick of the Day: The Big Lebowski 25th Anniversary Screenings w/Leonard Maltin (in LA & NYC) 4/16 & 4/20

One of the most definitive movies of the 90s came out right near the end of it; that film of course being The Coen Brothers’ masterwork, The Big Lebowski. It’s such a seminal movie that it’s one of the rare cinematic works that regularly have gatherings such as Lebowskifest to celebrate its existence as a cultural touchstone.

As of this year, The Big Lebowski will mark a quarter century since its release into theaters and Fathom Events wants to do a special tribute by bringing The Dude and company (and enemies) all back to the big screen for two nights at all Fathom Events participating theaters (mostly Regal and AMC). On Apr. 16th and 4/20, a very special screening of The Big Lebowski will happen across the country, definitely in NYC and LA with special commentary from renowned film critic and historian, Leonard Maltin.

Tickets are $20 across the board and you can (and should) go get them here.

Woody Harrelson Will Be Doing a Feature Length Live Film About His London Arrest and Broadcast It Into Theaters

Almost 15 years ago, Woody Harrelson had an incident in a taxi in London that ended up getting him arrested.

Now, based on that very incident, Harrelson wants to make some cinema history.

Woody Harrelson wrote a feature length film about the incident, which is called Lost in London. Apparently, he will be performing the film live with Owen Wilson and Willie Nelson. As technology is in a much different place than it was in 2002, this live performance can be captured as a film ostensibly done in “one take” and broadcast into theaters as it is happening.

You didn’t read that wrong.

Woody Harrelson will essentially be doing a one-take film live and live streaming it into a movie theater near you.

Live streaming performances into theaters has existed for years now, but only for events such as Opera at the Met or Rifftrax. Something as ambitious as Lost in London could be breaking new ground for cinema, broadcast, comedy, live performance, performance art, etc.

Woody explains the details in this trailer and claims that it might great or a disaster, but definitely worth watching. We concur with this assessment.

Lost in London LIVE is set to happen next week on Thursday, January 19th, 2017. You can get your tickets via Fathom Events here.

In Memory of Gene Wilder, ‘Young Frankenstein’ Will Screen in Over 500 Theaters With a Live Introduction from Mel Brooks

Thanks to Fathom Events, this might be the most special one-night only screening of Young Frankenstein other than the premiere.

On Wednesday, October 5th, Mel Brooks and longtime friend and collaborator of Gene Wilder’s will introduce, live, one of their greatest works together, Young Frankenstein screening over half a thousand theater screens around the country.

If you didn’t get to catch Brooks at Radio City Music Hall recently, this might be the next best thing.

While theater chains have midnight screenings on Thursdays and sometimes a little earlier, very rarely do you hear of a big studio movie, especially one of potential animated summer juggernaut “Inside Out” playing in several theaters a few days before the official theatrical release date.

Turns out that Disney is giving this special theater events (RiffTrax, Opera at The Met) a try.

On Tues. Jun. 16th (three days before actual release), Disney Pixar’s Inside Out will have one special screening in participating theaters around the U.S. that will include the usual short film as well as a satellite broadcasted Q&A with the director Pete Docter and Amy Poehler as her character Joy.

Our guess is that it will probably sell out in advance and probably encourage more pre-release events in the future.

Now, you’ll be able to watch more than those clips about marketing and pop music for once.

Of Bill Hicks’ works, his special “Relentless” is probably the one that you’ve seen the most if you’ve seen any of Bill Hicks’ stand-up specials or TV appearances at all.

Thanks to Fathom Events, you’ll be able to see the special in its entirety in select theaters on Apr. 27th. Get your tickets for participating theaters here.

You can also see a trailer featuring bits that we’re guessing you’ve probably never seen before.

Jon Stewart’s directorial debut Rosewater would be remiss without some sort of event attached to the movie’s premiere.

Luck would have that on Nov. 13th at 7:30PM EST (and tape delay for 7:30PM MT/CT/PST), Stewart will be chatting with his satirical news program cohort Stephen Colbert and it will be broadcast into theaters via Fathom Events.

While Rosewater isn’t at all a comedy, we’re sure that Stewart and Colbert in conversation will be a whole lot of fun, perhaps reminiscent of John Mulaney recently interviewing Dan Mintz.

New Wave Entertainment To Bring More Live Comedy to Movie Theaters via Fathom Events

As comedy specials like those of Kevin Hart’s and live events like Rifftrax have shown promise in movie theaters over the last few years, it was only a matter of time before someone was going to go full bore with live comedy on the big screen. Turns out that someone will be New Wave Entertainment teaming up with the biggest live event movie distributor Fathom Events.

Not exactly sure what will come of all of this, but we’d probably bet the a movie theater crowd won’t heckle.
