July 9, 2020

Though the Supreme Court did just make a recent decision in favor of abortion, there, as with everything right now, is still plenty of work to do in letting women not have their bodies legislated.

Thus, great comedians from all around the country including Francesca Fiorentini, Clare O’Kane, Jourdain Searles, Kate Willett, and Rachel McCartney are virtually assembling from coast to coast in collaboration with the Pittsburgh DSA Socialist Feminist committee to raise money for the Western PA Fund for Choice (@WPAFund4Choice). This fund actually services abortion access to Western PA, West Virginia, and Ohio, FYI.

This Abortion Fundraise Online Comedy Show is set for Fri. July 10th at 6PM PT/9PM ET and ought to be both worthy of your time and money for a great cause. They’re asking for $10 donation, but you can give what you can. Get more details/RSVP here.

Pick of the Day: Sixteen Thousand Dollars (Screening & Discussion)

News
dsa, screening, short film, sixteen thousand dollars

This comedy short film Sixteen Thousand Dollars directed by Symone Baptiste has been our radar for a long time as many LA comedy favorites are featured throughout including Brodie Reed, Ellington Wells, and David Gborie and it has gone through the film festival circuit all across the country (back when you could watch a screening at a film festival in real life). Also, the premise of what reparations for slavery might look like already had us drawn in and is more timely than ever right now as white supremacy is getting dismantled more so than it has before in recent years.

So, there will be a virtual screening of Sixteen Thousand Dollars, courtesy of DSA Afrosocialist & Socialists of Color Caucus, and Q&A discussion to follow, which ought to be more crucial of a Q&A than your typical film screening Q&As.

Sixteen Thousand Dollars is set to screen on Sun. Jun. 21st at 12PM PT/3PM ET. Get more details and RSVP here.

By the way, here’s a trailer.

It’s more than obvious right now that we need a big change in many of our leaders, especially elected officials. The NYC chapter of the DSA is working hard to make that happen. They’re aiming to have four specific candidates to fill state level offices namely, Jabari Brisport, Phara Forrest, Marcela Mitayanes, and Zohran Mamdani.

To accomplish this, there will be a big telethon-ish variety benefit show called You Had Me at New York featuring a line-up that’s stacked on top of being stacked. Slated for this extravaganza are:

Jaboukie Young-White, Bowen Yang, Sarah Silverman, Julio Torres, Cynthia Nixon, Nina Turner, Philip Agnew, Patti Harrison, Jerry Paper, Larry Owens, Kate Berlant, John Early, Madison McFerrin, Aparna Nancherla, Nina Turner, Balún, Dynasty Handbag, Ruby McCollister, Cole Escola, Micheal Cavadias, Sarah Sherman, Chani Nicholas, Una Osato aka ExHOTic, Other, Jennifer Vanilla, Jeremy & Rajat, Tommy Pico, Joey De Jesus, Kiko Soiree, Simone Norman.

If you’re anti-Trump, you ought to know that one of the groups leading the charge is the Democratic Socialists of America.

The DSA is a volunteer activist organization that does a bunch of good shit around town like drive low-income women to abortion clinics, confront politicians who are cool with families being destroyed by deportation, or fight to get our City Council to stop investing money with banks that fund the Dakota Access Pipeline.

They’re throwing a comedy show fundraiser for their LA chapter and they’ve rustled up a damn fine line-up.

You can come watch the show at Nerdmelt in the back room of Meltdown Comics and they’re just asking for a $20 suggested donation. Get more details here.
