Pick of the Day: Writing on the Stall (in NYC) 3/27-4/13

News
bathroom graffiti, caitlin cook, musical comedy, nyc comedy, solo show

Just as we got to do with Jacqueline Novak‘s lauded Get On Your Knees, we have had the esteemed privilege of seeing Caitlin Cook‘s brilliant conceived and developed musical solo show, Writing on the Stall, completely sourced from years and years collecting/seeing/cataloging images of bathroom graffiti.

Even from seeing bits of it projected on a makeshift screen on the rooftop level of a parking garage, Cook has had managed to beautifully span a hilarious emotional odyssey stitched together through sharpie-d and scratched non-sequiturs that has garnered acclaimed at the big time at Edinburgh Fringe as well as touring all throughout the U.S.

Cook and Writing on the Stall is getting another Off Broadway run that will stretch from Mar. 27th to Apr. 13th, Wednesdays through Saturdays at 9PM at the lovely Soho Playhouse in NYC. Tickets are $46.50 and you really REALLY not miss out on seeing the show if, somehow, you haven’t seen it already.

TCB Debriefing 8/2/23: Dreaming Whilst Black, Barbie in Middle East, Reservation Dogs, Caitlin Cook

News

1. First look at Showtime’s new UK dramedy, Dreaming Whilst Black, from Adjanai Salmon here. If you’ve been dreaming of Insecure with British accents, you might want to get into this starting Sun. Sept. 10th at 10PM on Showtime.

2. Barbie might be banned in the Middle East because, well, it’s probably too queer (and everything) for them (Variety), but actually might surpass that $1 billion mark that Margot Robbie dreamed of at the box office in the next few days (Deadline). That means Barbie might be the most commercially successful Oscar winner since LOTR, even without Middle East box office receipts.

3. A friendly neighborhood reminder that the critically acclaimed, award winning Reservation Dogs is back for its third and final season starting tonight on FX/Hulu.

4. The best show you’ll ever see about bathroom graffiti, The Writing’s on the Stall from Caitlin Cook is set to make it’s Off-Broadway debut at the SoHo Playhouse on Wednesdays-Saturdays in September. You will never look at bathroom art the same way ever again. Go get tix right now right here.

5. Stand-up comedy crowd work needs to evolve past asking “Where are you from?” and “What do you do for a living?”

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 81: Caitlin Cook & New New York Comedy

News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
aj holmes, caitlin cook, dave chappelle, new york comedy festival, nyc comedy, that 90s show, the closer

One of the more wide ranging comedy multi-hyphenates we know, Caitlin Cook, joins us as a musical comedian/writer/director/designer/illustrator to not only give us the lowdown on how in flux the NYC comedy scene is (even though it’s supposedly “back”), but the vast spread of projects she has taken on. That includes directing the fantastic solo show/musical hybrid, A.J. Holmes: Yeah, But Not Right Now, working on her own original music, comedy and otherwise, and gearing up to go back on the road (and a million other things as doing all that you can at all times is a prerequisite in NYC comedy). Also, “hot” takes on Chappelle, The New York Comedy Festival, That 90s Show, and more.

Follow Caitlin @thecaitlincook on IG and Twitter and get tickets to the final weekend of AJ Holmes: Yeah, But Not Right Now at aj-holmes.com.
